Bathroom Ghost

Hi to everyone, this is my first post in the Fortean Times Forum.

One lunchtime I arrived home from work to the sound of running water upstairs. Fearing the worst I ran upstairs to find the bath filling with hot and cold water. It was a shocking sight to see, water was overflowing the bath and flooding the floor. This led to some expensive repair bills that I could have down without. The whole experience did spook me as I live on my own and shower (never bathe) in the morning. There where no signs of an intruder and I even checked with a nieghbour to see if she had noticed anyone hanging around.

Anyway, all went quiet for around 8 months until one sunday evening i heard the sound of something falling to the bathroom floor. My instant reaction was a feeling of - oh no, not in there, I investigated and found my toothbrush, shaver and some soaps scattered along the floor. There where no windows open, no drafts just a very odd feeling that seemed to linger on the landing.

The last wierdness happened just before christmas. I awoke one early morning to the familiar sound of bath water. This time (thank god) the bath was around half full of hot water Which I turned off tightly. On this occasion the bathroom door was open (i always keep doors closed) and the previous feeling of oddness seemed to be coming from the stairs.

Nothing has happened this side of christmas so far. If it is a haunting, why does the ghost take an interest in my bathroom and then leave the house for several months?

Never mind the taps, how did the plug get put it? I would consider removing it from its chain and keep it in another room.
Welcome to the board btw.

If the whatever it is can turn taps and throw toothbrushes, putting in the bath plug doesn't sound too much of a task. Does sound quite malicious if it is thinking its actions out, however.

Yeah a bit more background would be good. What sort of state were the taps in? Had the washers gone?

Stuff like this does happen. I know a women who's house partially burned down as the bread bin door fell onto the the toaster on switch and turned it on. Weird as hell but that's what the fire brigade says happened.

That is definitely freaky. Have you thought about calling in psychic researchers?

hi, the bathroom suite was fitted around a year before the first incident.

Not really. The what-ever-it-is is a rare and wierd thing and im not too sure about such researchers. Ive seen them on TV documentaries and in many cases they make matters worse.

Yes, i agree and have often wondered if it enjoys what it does.

I taken your advice on board and cut it from its chain. In both bath filling incidents the plug was originally wrapped around the taps.

Ive always felt or sensed that its definately a man spirit. I have had some really strange dreams before or soon after its visits. These have consisted of a bizarre looking face on my TV screen or near a window etc. He doesnt scare me in these dreams but I just stand there wondering what the F are you.

Apologies for the F folks.

That's reassuring.

So any pattern to it?
What sort of emotional state where you in when these things happened?
Is there any history to the place?
Anyone else witnessed felt anything
There are simple blessings that more qualified folk on here could inform you about.

You havent got anyone hiding in your loft, have you?

Well no pattern rarely, each incident where months apart in different seasons of the year.

Emotional state: When the bath was filling in the early hours I did feel drained and worn out in general - oh, I remember:that day would have been my Grandfathers birthday (which felt like a coincidence). But apart from that
nothing out of the ordinary.
Apart from the kind lady over the road, my nieghbours are not neighbourly. The previous residents where a couple with kids.
Thanks for your interest Naughty_Felid

I originally decided to post my experience here with hope that someone else had witnessed something similar.

Ive heard and read up on ghosts and the like but never heard of taps being turned on. Its all very wierd.

I`m currently considering purchasing some kind of CCTV and installing it along the landing.

Looking back, after the second bath filling incident I did clean the bathroom and remove a selection of large crystals clusters and points etc. For some reason I had the bizarre idea that they may be attracting it - so far, so good.

It sounds to me more like a poltergeist than a ghost. Polts do specialise in physical actions such as you describe. (They are often associated with houses where there are teenage children, especially when they are around puberty.)

But ghosts in general tend to be more into half-seen appearances, strange (imagined?) sounds, and general feelings of weirdness.

Have a look at

and see if it gives you any ideas. If not, I'm sure there are many Polt threads here.

If you have a laptop an infrared webcam may be cheaper as you could leave your laptop plugged in. Do you know any history of the building or the area?

Wow, thanks for that info. I never knew that!

Its an old looking house (from the outside) so there must be some linkage for what ever it is to the place. I have looked at old maps of the area and found that my road existed way back into the 1800s with woodland around it. One theory Ive had goes along the lines that in the past people travelled along this road or reached it via the woodland. This would suggest why my experiences are limited - could a traveling spook repeating its former lifes behaviour come across my house and for some reason take an interest in what may not have been a bathroom for it?

Its way too late for me now, i need sleep and have Ive enjoyed the forum. A big thumbs up to all of you who have replied. I wish I had joined earlier!

Good night folks.

And in an alternative reality, the person who lives in your house is probably posting on a message board not unlike this one, that their bath plug was mysteriously removed and turned up in a bedside drawer. :D

I would say two things to that.

1. In all my years of setting up CCTV cameras in haunted places, I am yet to capture film eveidence of a ghost. An object will move every now and then (like a rocking chair), or a shadow changes, or the camera gets interference but never, ever, do we see a ghost just walking by with his bath towel under his arm. What do you expect to see on the landing? What do you want to see?

2. On the off chance that you do capture something, could you ever sleep in the house again? Or even just be alone there?

People often recommend setting up cameras especially, for some reason, when people are having things happen during the night. The suggestion being to film yourself sleeping and see what you get up to (i.e. sleep walking etc). But what if you're not getting up to anything? And you instead film a) a ghost standing by your bed staring at you or b) Someone else creeping around your house whilst you're blissfully unawares in your bed.

I remember after my first ghostly encounter as an adult, I had trouble sleeping for a while even though what had happened wasn't even in my house. It changes your persepctive on life.

As a great philospoher once said "Is it better not to know, than know something you don't want to know?". OK - I said that but you know what I mean.

Or...the "person" in the other reality is sat on the loo reading a newspaper when, a smell fills his nostrils. He calls downstairs to his wife, "Have you had a man upstairs? I can smell aftershave!!!! Oh, and wheres that frigging plug gone again?!?!?!?":D:D

Well, with the bathroom door open - who knows, but if I did see a ghostly figure using my bathroom I dont know if Id laugh or cry.

Ive slept throughout those incidents but if i got a big scare - Id consider moving. I just need to know alittle more about this phantom (pardon the expression) bog-trotter.

Some good points there, I`ll take them onboard and reconsider my camera plan. Thanks btw.

Be it a ghost of polty - it only seems to use my house as a pit-stop or so it seems.

I hope all is paranormal free at your end.

Never a squeak :( Although on the basis that one woman's religion is another woman's superstitious behaviour I suppose the Catholic paraphernalia I have dotted around the house probably counts as fortean activity in its own right :D
