A sad case. I reckon its Fortean cos of the reference to the cross which contained wood of the "True Cross".

Nuns killed for convent treasure
By Malcolm Brabant
BBC News, Athens

The Peloponnese is home to many historic monasteries and churches
Police in southern Greece are hunting the killers of two elderly nuns found suffocated in their hillside convent.
The motive appears to be robbery - the killers are believed to have taken a crucifix containing wood reputedly from the cross on which Jesus Christ died.

The two murdered nuns were 83 and 61 years old.

They were the sole occupants of the monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin near Astros, about 130km (80 miles) south-west of Athens.

A nephew of the younger victim said the mother superior had had a premonition that thieves would come to the hillside sanctuary, kill them and take everything.

Police say the two women were suffocated with pillows.

An inventory is being checked to determine exactly what was stolen.

This region of the Peloponnese is full of historic monasteries and convents, most of which contain valuable icons and gold artefacts.

Until now, their protection has been the faith and reverence for the Church of local people.

The double murder follows last year's widely publicised theft from a convent of a precious icon of the Virgin Mary said to possess miraculous powers.

The crimes are being portrayed as the end of an age of innocence, and theologians are calling on the Church to access European Union funds to beef up security.

Great stuff decryption-ware.

Coded letter written by a 17th Century nun while she was 'possessed by the Devil' is finally translated using decryption software discovered on the dark web
  • Letter written by Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione in 1676
  • She said it was a message from the devil, but it could not be translated
  • Thanks to a decryption software on the dark web, it is now been decoded
  • It claims 'God was invented by man', calling him and Jesus 'dead weights'

They say the letter is rambling and not entirely consistent and understandable. This supports the theory held by modern scientists that - rather than being 'possessed by the devil' - Sister Maria suffered from schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.
really ? either that or they induced an unreliable "translation" ... the text is not reproduced

It's not exactly the first time letters from the devil have featured in the Mail! That one was more thought-provoking than his more recent stuff for them! :evillaugh:

It's interesting that the Devil points out in that letter that God and Jesus are man-made fictions, yet he doesn't point out that he would also therefore be a man-made fictional creation.

Perhaps the Devil doesn't do irony?

Those naughty nuns are at it again!

Two Cork-based nuns who recently breached Covid-19 restrictions by attending an exorcism of the Dáil were recently ordered to remove medicinal claims about an ointment they had been selling.

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) confirmed that the claims had been removed from social media about a black salve ointment which was claimed could cure "abnormal skin growths".

Mother Irene Gibson, of a group called the Carmelite Sisters of the Holy Face of Jesus, has been ordered to leave a compound at Corran South near the village of Leap in West Cork by next June along with her colleague Sr Anne Marie. ...

A complaint was made to the HPRA about the sale of the ointment and a cough syrup, both online and in Skibbereen in November. The products are on sale on eBay. The authority has since ordered that claims about the medicine to be removed from the internet. ...

And they're off!

Hermit 'nuns' who had established an unauthorised prayer retreat near Leap in West Cork have cleared the site, bar a wooden fence, and are to pay €1,000 in fines and legal costs to Cork County Council.

Sr Irene Gibson, who says she is a Carmelite Nun of the Holy Face of Jesus, had been convicted of a breach of Section 154 of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended, in late 2019 in relation to an unauthorised development at Corran South near the village of Leap in West Cork.

That came after she had first established the prayer retreat in 2016 and a year after Cork County Council had first brought enforcement proceedings against her, resulting in a prosecution before Skibbereen District Court in May 2019. In December 2019, Sr Irene and her younger colleague, New Zealander Sr Anne Marie Loeman, were given time to relocate and return the site to its original condition. The matter had been due before court in April last year but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown.

Judge James McNulty heard last September that while “significant” downsizing at the site had taken place, the women were still resident there and had had little success in their plans to relocate. Judge McNulty had suggested at that time that they could consider relocating to a different part of the country.

I find it hilarious how oddly specific these orders are about which bits of venerable holy body they venerate.

Would a sister of the Carmelite Order of the Holy Face of Jesus deplore and despise the relative heresies of the sister of the Benedictine order of the Holy Left Ear Lobe of Jesus?

Do they both enjoy a relative free ride compared to the Cistercian order of the sacred back of the right knee?

Having spent time, as a cultural catholic, in primary schools run by religous orders, I've found their adherents must be treated with the same kind of respect as a large four legged animal that has a strong kick..

An exorcism of the Dáil? Why is this not in itself news?
I did a bit of searching. Pretty much every result for "exorcism of the Dáil" relates primarily to the nuns breaching Covid restrictions.

As you say, one would think that if the authorities called in an exorcist to deal with a haunting at the Irish parliament, that in itself would be controversial and newsworthy.

However, all that seems to have happened is a group of protestors performing the exorcism on their own initiative from outside the building.

This link gives more detail.

Extracts:
In 2018, the entire world was shocked by images of Irish politicians laughing, singing and dancing about abortion at Dublin Castle. Many expressed sheer ecstasy at the potential of babies being bludgeoned to death on Irish soil...

...With these blatantly demonic forces at play, a significant group of Catholics (around 200) gathered at Leinster House on Tuesday 8th December in Dublin to pray the Rosary. After praying the Rosary, a minor exorcism was carried out on the building....

...Having finished the minor exorcism on that side of the building, the Rosary procession then made its way around to the other side of the building to do the same.

This is how I like my nuns
