Zombie Watch

Just thinking that from the above post down to my post of Demon Wind would be more at home in the Zombie Movies thread.

This thread is more about Zombie type behaviour & analysis of possible Zomnbie Outbreaks as reported in the MSM.

I'll ask a kind mod to move them if you have no objections.
Not at all sir and thank you !

Into the Zombie Underworld
by Mischa Berlinski

I moved to Haiti in the spring of 2007, when my wife found a job with the United Nations' peacekeeping mission there, established after the fall of Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004. She was assigned to Jérémie, a small town on Haiti's southwest coast. Jérémie is just 125 miles or so from Port-au-Prince, but only a dirt road links the two cities, and the trip can take 14 or 15 hours, if the road is passable at all: When the summer rains set in or the fall hurricanes blow through, the road is just mud. The weekly boat to Port-au-Prince is slow and dangerous. Otherwise, the only connection to the capital is by propeller plane.

About a month after I arrived in Jérémie, a rumor swept through town that a deadly zombie was on the loose. This zombie, it was said, could kill by touch alone. The story had enough authority that schools closed. The head of the local secret society responsible for the management of the zombie population was asked to investigate. Later that week, Monsieur Roswald Val, having conducted a presumably thorough inquiry, made an announcement on Radio Lambi: There was nothing to fear; all his zombies were accounted for.

Shortly after that incident, I started taking Creole lessons from a motorcycle-taxi driver named Lucner Delzor. Delzor was married with four children, but he kept a mistress on the other side of town. He told me that he had never so much as drunk a glass of water at his mistress's house for fear she might lace his food with love powder. He loved his wife and children far too much to risk that.

One of my first complete sentences in Creole was "Gen vréman vre zonbi an Ayiti?" Or: "Are there really, truly zombies in Haiti?"

I can't remember upsetting him the first time ..

Not upset! I just realised that some posts we'd both made were more appropriate to the Zombie films thread as this thread is about media reports of zombiesque behaviour.

Thanks, Yith, I enjoyed reading that immensely, especially after the author explicitly acknowledged the elements of exoticism in many non-Haitian accounts of the place. Beautifully presented, also.

Illinois lawmakers designate October 'Zombie Preparedness Month'

Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Illinois lawmakers are encouraging the state to be undead-ready by passing a resolution declaring October to be "Zombie Preparedness Month."

The state House voted Thursday to approve House Resolution 0030, which calls for October to be declared "Zombie Preparedness Month" as a bid to encourage the state's residents to be prepared for more realistic natural disasters.

"If the citizens of Illinois are prepared for zombies, than they are prepared for any natural disaster; while a Zombie Apocalypse may never happen, the preparation for such an event is the same as for any natural disaster," the resolution reads.

"I am told that if you are prepared for zombies, then you would be prepared to deal with a natural disaster like tornadoes, blizzards -- natural disasters of any kind," Rep. Emanuel Chris Welch, D-Hillside, told the Chicago Tribune.

He said the lighthearted resolution is aimed at drawing attention to a serious issue.

"If we need to do something like Zombie Preparedness Month to get people's attention to an important issue like preparing for a natural disaster, then so be it," he said.

Not all lawmakers were amused by the resolution, however. Some blasted their colleagues for spending time on the zombie issue while the state still has yet to pass a budget.

"This may sound like fun, but if you're really concerned about disaster, the natural disaster that's happening in Illinois is all economic," said Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton.

DELTONA, Fla. - A man who said he was too worried about zombies to stay outside broke into a Deltona home and stole belongings, according to the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

The victim woke up around 3 a.m. Thursday to the sound of someone rummaging through dresser drawers and saw Patrick Ray, 31, standing in his living room, the arrest report said. Ray walked out of the home when he saw the victim.

The victim said he noticed his shorts, wallet and house keys were missing. He woke up his son and then Ray returned to the home minutes later, telling the victim about "zombies trying to get him and he felt uncomfortable outside," according to the report.

The victims blocked Ray from leaving until deputies could arrive. ...

George Romero's Son has made RISE OF THE LIVING DEAD, a prequel to his Dad' seminal Night OF THE LIVING DEAD apparently...

riseofthelivdead_large.jpg

.. so far this tots up to NIGHT, DAWN, DAY, SURVIVAL, DIARY, .. as well as LAND OF THE DEAD, the dreadful DAY remake, the not too bad at all DAWN remake, the even more dreadful CHILDREN OF THE LIVING DEAD that I wouldn't wish on my own worst enemy even if Tom Savini had a small part in it and RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, 1 to 5, number 1 being the best and great fun to watch, and now RISE .. have I missed any out? (Romero and Russo ones only please) ...

Robert Kurtzman's name is the only one I recognise in this below link, the K of KNB F/X, the N being Greg Nicotero the driving force behind THE WALKING DEAD so that's hopefully going to count for something ..

Fear not! @maximus otter will save us from the Zombie Deer!

The concept of the living dead has fascinated us for decades and science has proven that it is possible. What’s more is that experts have estimated that in the event of a zombie apocalypse, humankind would be outnumbered a million to one within just 100 days.

To put that in context, that means that there would be just 7,600 people left in the entire world after the first three months.

While most of us live in the hope that this will never happen, experts have recently issued a warning about a “zombie deer disease” which could one day spread to humans. Otherwise known as chronic wasting disease (CWD), it is spreading rapidly in the US and Canada.

So what exactly is CWD? Well, it’s an infection that attacks the spinal cord and other tissues that results in dramatic weight loss, lack of coordination, and, in some cases, aggression, before the infected animals eventually die.

In January of 2018, cases of this terrifying disease have bee reported in 22 states and two Canadian provinces.

The video below details everything that you need to know about CWD: ...

Difficult to get good guarantees on the property market these days so this cottage should be snapped up.

Muskoka cottage comes with 30-day 'zombie-free' guarantee
The last thing anybody wants is to buy a family cottage and find out it’s infected, says cottage owner Matthew Swan.

It comes equipped with all the modern conveniences a family would need to survive a zombie apocalypse — five bedrooms, a loft and bunkie, two kitchens and baths and a sandy beach with a clear view of the water.

But buyers just weren’t biting on the island cottage Matthew Swan is selling, even though it sleeps 26 — dead or alive.

The 63-year-old Mississauga man applied some brains to the matter, reasoning that people are drawn to things that frighten them and things that make them laugh.

So he posted a billboard just north of Brechin, Ont., along Highway 12, advertising his certified zombie-free cottage.

Only 30 days? Not impressed.

Relax: the US military has a plan to deal with a zombie rising. Genuinely...

Meet CONPLAN-8888

"On the website of the U.S. Strategic Command, you can find CONPLAN 8888-11, a detailed plan for “counter-zombie dominance” prepared by a group of junior officers as part of a training exercise. The document, which came to public attention a few years ago, is festooned with disclaimers, including a large red box on the first page informing readers that the assignment was based on a “completely fictitious scenario” — but presumably the disclaimers would themselves be disclaimed...in the event of an actual zombie invasion."

An interesting summation and discussion of the plan here.

More on the Zombie Deer disease. I fear Max has contracted it. He's missing a lot of deer shots lately.

Hundreds of deer, elk, and moose across the United States and Canada have already succumbed the brain-wasting chronic wasting disease (CWD) known as “zombie” deer disease.

Now scientists are worried it will cross over to humans who unwittingly eat meat from infected animals. Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease professor from the University of Minnesota, estimates that up to 15,000 infected animals are eaten by humans every year and could rise. “It’s possible the number of human cases will be substantial and will not be isolated events,” he told USA Today. Osterholm likens the potential for human infection to Mad Cow disease which spread across the United Kingdom in the 80s and 90s and which was also a so-called prion disease, which are known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies. :sorry:

On a less lighthearted note, is this the new disease that’s going to kill us all? The successor to AIDS, necrotising fasciitis, Ebola, BSE and all the other contenders?

Or is it just the season of the year when university professors prepare their grant applications?

You won't be laughing when a zombie deer crunches your skull to eat your brains (and finds nowt!).

This scare should be good for a few bad B List horror films.

Gimme Shelter! Avoid the Zombie apocalypse.

The London boroughs that are the safest places to be during a zombie apocalypse - and the areas that would be lethal

We’ve all woken up on a Wednesday and thought ‘I can’t bring myself to go into work’. Well imagine you’ve woken up and looked out your window - and you’re forced to phone your boss and say ‘I’m really sorry but I can’t come in today, there’s a zombie apocalypse outside.’Do you think they’d believe you? Most likely not. They say being in large groups is the best way to survive something like this - so who’d be in yours? More importantly, you’d have to establish the best place to go and get resources. And don’t pretend there aren’t any people who you’d like to see get swallowed up into the abyss.

On the off-chance that doomsday arrives, experts at RantCasino.com sought to establish the safest spots in the capital. It conducted the research using the number of cemeteries in a borough.

According to the research, there are three boroughs in London which - in the unlikely event of a catastrophe of biblical proportion - you’re stuffed if you live in. South London’s Southwark is the number one death zone. Residents might simply won’t be able to survive, with a staggering 267,818 potential zombies roaming around their streets! Number two goes to The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea aren’t safe either, with a potential 200,289 zombies with 16,173 zombies per KM² - talk about densely populated! The City of London isn’t safe either and could play host to 11,654 zombies. With 101 cemeteries in the city, there is a 106 per cent zombie-to-population ratio, making it a highly unsafe area to live in if Doomsday occurs.

Next is Hounslow, with 2,243 potential undead. With a slightly higher zombie-to-population ratio of 0.83 per cent but a smaller population count, it is one of London’s safest boroughs in a zombie apocalypse.

But it’s not all doom and gloom - there are also boroughs where you definitely want to be should society descend into chaos. The safest London borough is Sutton, with ‘only’ 1,926 living-dead affecting this borough. With only eight cemeteries in Sutton, you’re 99 per cent safer here compared to Southwark, officially making it the safest London borough to live in!
