This lecture, by Professor Tittler, introduces the journal, kept by a Stockton schoolmaster, John Chipchase, which was discovered in the Special Collections of Concordat University in Montreal, Canada. The journal presents an intriguing local perspective of the late eighteenth century in Stockton. Its observations of weather, war, death, and disease; of the homing instinct of cats, the migration of fish, the life cycle of snails; of blizzards and droughts; of ghost soldiers on the hillside and rioting women in the market-place, all exemplify the enquiring mind of an eighteenth century laymen.

The odd topic of fortean interest in this public event on the 2nd of May for those in the grim north east. To book - http://www.tees.ac.uk/sections/whats_on/events_details.cfm?event_id=10117
