John Carpenter

she looks amazing.
.. and she's always been really likeable and down to earth, most actresses would let it go to their heads if a film was made around them called 'Perfect' which was basically celebrating her body but not our Jamie ..

'The Thing' 80's feature with the alternate ending .. I haven't watched this yet, it might be the stop motion Blair Monster stuff ..

New shots from Carpenter's (sorry, David Gordon Green's) new HALLOWEEN .. I haven't got a problem with any of the original's past sequels (apart from that one with Busta Rhymes .. that one was crap) but I'm also excited to pretend that none of them happened and that this is Laurie Strode's true part 2 .. I'm also going to pretend that Myers stole 2 or 3 Shatner masks after escaping from the asylum ..

.. and a video review of behind the scenes pics ..

I hate 'transparently explanatory dialogue' that is clearly aimed at the audience and not another character.

It's bad scripting and that trailer features a lot of it.
I can't tell yet if that's going to be a consistent but I know what you mean .. with 80's horror at least I can tolerate that T.E. dialogue stuff because most of those films were pretty camp anyway .. "You crazy kids had better not go to that house!" .. "It was ten years ago on this very night!" .. "What do you mean the car won't start?!" etc ..

Yeah looks great because most secure hospitals have Alsatians and do their therapy in the courtyard with lots of stereo-typical "inmates" hanging around. Maybe Gestalt.?

He was never a schlock director

He made some of the best films of the 70's and 80's. His films were tight and brilliant, music, pacing, everything. Just check out the finest horror movie that was ever made - The Thing - Again.

I said a few years back that he needed to stop making films just like Romero that pisses on their legacy. Savini has the right idea with his school and has kept his legacy intact.

Although The Evil Dead is my favourite horror film, if I had to chose between chucking that or John Carpenter out of the hot air balloon (so to speak) ? it would be no contest that John Carpenter would stay .. he's the only director who's ever given me genuine nightmares .

I just hate this reboot - I was never a big fan of slashers but seeing Halloween on VHS for the first time it was terrifying I was about 11.

Does he really need the money?

Hopefully he's doing it out of love ? .. and he never seems to look any older does he? .. I suppose because he's always looked old.

Raimi held off for years until the "right" director came along to reboot it. So no, it wasn't a cash-grab.

I still didn't like it either though!

I think you meant Carpenter ? .. although I liked Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead reboot, it was as mean spirited as the original.

Ha, I was talking about the Evil Dead remake, but now see the original quote was about Halloween :salute:

The Evil Dead
The Haunting
Jaws
The Thing
In The Mouth Of Madness

.. how about you ?

The Thing
Dawn of the Dead (Orig)
Return of the Living Dead
Alien
The Grudge, (Orig), as I can put Jaws into multi-genre.

If I have to remove Alien for being SF then The Evil Dead.

Interesting for both lists had no slashers included. I wonder if it's because they don't do well with re-watching?

Mind you never been a fan of the genre.

I had an interesting exchange recently on The Evil Dead fan site, a younger poster mentioned something along the lines that the Ash vs Evil Dead TV show had probably been cancelled because it had been relegated to only being broadcast through the STARZ channel (an un hip channel apparently in the States) so it had suffered because of that because "old people just won't get Evil Dead") .. I had to remind him that old people (people over the age of 45) were the original Evil Dead fans :)

I was too young to learn about and watch Dawn until I'd seen Day and wanted more .. crap blue zombie and poster paint red blood make up aside, it was genuinely atmospheric and a product of its time ..

I'm a huge Return fan, I still have the VHS tape that I managed to talk our school teachers into playing on a school trip on a coach when we all went on a field trip to London in the 80's ..

I was too young to appreciate ALIEN so it dragged a bit for me the first time I saw it, a solid stone cold classic for sure but it didn't scare me ..

The Grudge (orig) was creepy as hell the first time I saw it but the endless imitators including little girls in dirty long white dresses with their long dirty hair combed over their faces have ruined it for me now ..

The 'torture porn' label started (to the best of my knowledge) after the SAW films and that whole sub genre .. I suppose we could also pop culturally rewind that a bit to when we looked forward to Jason Vorhees and his Mum's body counts and story line character development was secondary: The Burning, Sleepaway Camp, The Prowler, My Bloody Valentine etc etc .. the difference to me was that they were a bit more tongue in cheek than the endless depressing dirty rooms that the jigsaw ripped people up in, stalk and slash was more thrilling than torture porn ..

I didn't mind the blue zombies myself, but the guy who made Lucio Fulci's undead also hated that look, which is why he caked them in clay for Zombie Flesh Eaters, etc...

Without checking (I'm testing myself) .. F/X artist Sergio Stivaletti ? .. I could be wrong ..

edit: I'm wrong, it was ..

further edit: it seems he's not slowing down with old age in picking 'edgy for our times' stuff to work on ..

.. anyway .. sorry .. John Carpenter stuff instead ..

The second trailer for the new HALLOWEEN (not directed by Carpenter this time but 'overseen' by him, Carpenter has provided the film's score again which is a massive plus) . Although I'm really looking forward to this, Michael Myers strolling around fully crowded streets and walking down an occupied driveway while making no effort at all to conceal himself in this trailer and with no one noticing or paying any attention to him at all is irritating me a bit and seems insulting to viewer's intelligence .. as far as I can tell so far from the trailers, he might as well be in a scene in this film where he's just walking through a crowded Heathrow Airport and no one sees him ? .. is it just me ?

The choice of overall producer for this is bitter sweet .. Malek Akkad is the son of Moustapha Akkad, the Muslim producer of the original 1978 HALLOWEEN who died in a terrorist attack during an Arab wedding celebration in 2005. This new film will now mark Malek's fifth of the series carrying on his dad's horror legacy
