Suggestions About Re-Organisation: Move & Merge Requests

I didn't think this situation could occur, because I though the forum software choked on identically-titled threads ...

We have 2 different threads with identical (misspelled) titles on the same subject:

hypnogogic images
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/hypnogogic-images.22683/

hypnogogic images
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/hypnogogic-images.24900/

I recommend they be merged under the corrected title 'Hypnagogic Images'

Done.

No, it'll accept them as long as they have different ID codes. We know that because of the accidental double-posted threads we delete from time to time. Same forum, same title, same content.

I'm not sure, incidentally, whether the thread ID codes are sequential.

... I'm not sure, incidentally, whether the thread ID codes are sequential.

Older forum software packages always seemed to maintain an index sequentially ordered with respect to time of thread accretion to the database. This would simplify (and hence accelerate) certain internal operations like searching.

As far as I can tell from rummaging around in the earliest areas of FTMB the thread ID's have been maintained all along. The broken internal links I've seen to date are broken because the URL format has changed, not because the thread ID has changed (in cases not involving subsequent mergers).

I'm not sure what protocol is followed where merging is involved, and I'm not sure that this protocol would have been consistently applied during the FTMB's multiple migrations across forum software packages.

Erm, yeah--that's what I was thinking!

Side Note ...

There's a specific searching capability that would greatly help in evaluating, reporting, and making 'repairs' to old threads. If I find a broken internal link to an FTMB thread, it will include a thread ID (number).

It would greatly facilitate things if there were a way to query the FTMB database using thread ID per se. In the absence of such a capability, I have to search with respect to the text content in attempting to locate the current version of a thread.

These 3 threads all deal with mysteriously appearing water / puddles indoors, and I recommend they be merged:

appearing water
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/appearing-water.2351/

Water Ghost
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/water-ghost.835/

Unexplained Water
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/unexplained-water.37546/
(THIS ONE IS IN THE IHTM SECTION)

The last one is in IHTM, but it turned into a general discussion worthy of being merged (IMHO; YMMV).

We have 2 threads dedicated to the proposed orbital 'nation' of Asgardia:

Asgardia, Proposed Space-Based Nation Accepting Citizenship Applications
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index...ion-accepting-citizenship-applications.61800/
(New Science)

Asgardia: The Space Nation
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/asgardia-the-space-nation.64127/
(Conspiracy: General)

I recommend they be merged under a generic / summary title such as the latter one above.

I'm agnostic about which section should most properly contain the merged thread. New Science doesn't strike me as a proper location.

Merged - have kept the name of the second, and shifted the whole into Human Condition.

We have 3 substantial threads on the notion of a holographic universe:

The Holographic Universe
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/the-holographic-universe.50437/

A Holographic Universe?
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/a-holographic-universe.24773/

The universe is a hologram
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/the-universe-is-a-hologram.3950/

I'd recommend they be merged.
I'm neutral as to whether they should be in General Forteana (where 2 reside) versus New Science (where the 3rd is).

This thread:

An Unsolved Mystery?
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/an-unsolved-mystery.64136/

... was posted first, and got over 10 replies. Apparently someone advised the OP it should be in the UL / Folklore section rather than General Forteana.

The OP posted a clone of the existing thread's post #1 to start a duplicate thread in the UL section:

An Unsolved Mystery?
http://forum.forteantimes.com/index.php?threads/an-unsolved-mystery.64159/

I recommend the duplicate thread be deleted and the original one be moved to UL / Folklore.

Thanks for all the above - will merge when I'm not browsing on my phone (it can have lively results. This I know.)
