Forum Functions & Functionality: Technical Problems & Known Issues

Dangerous admin at work ... :miner:

I tracked down at least one control that affects the forum description ('blurb') display. I've now reset the display mode from tool tips (hover-overs) to inline (permanent; listed beneath the forum titles). This is the way they were displayed on the old forum.

In our next episode ... Mobile users complain about the additional text sucking up their screen space ...
:evillaugh:

When I joined the old forum (seems like weeks and weeks ago) I found a page for beginners explaining font sizes, sample gifs, what format files for upload should be in etc, but I can't find it now. Specifically I want to hide an image/gif under a spoiler or parental guidance sticker - I wouldn't want to expose any-one to rum and uncanniness when they have a mouthful of Bovril for example

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the 'Help' link. A summary of the various posting possibilities can be found under the 'BB codes' option.

Is this what you were referring to?

Here's a list of the currently allowable file extensions for attachments:

Yes thank you, still got a lot to learn.

Thank you - any idea of how big the mp4 file can be ?
Also do you know how to copy and paste a section of a youtube video for example, without linking the whole thing?

It is preferable for you to link to videos rather than attempting to upload them here.

Copying and uploading a section of a YouTube video may well represent a copyright violation. If you need to draw members' attention to only a portion of a larger video include comments telling them where the focal section is to be found.

Load up any YouTube video, go to a specific time in the video, pause the video and right-click. Then you'll be able to choose "Copy video URL at current time" and end up with a URL in your clipboard that'll start the video at the time you chose.

Hmmm... slight oddness that is more amusing than problematic, but thought I'd report it just-in-case.

Just opened my browser (tab for the forum was already open and I was logged in from last time) and checked my Alerts, to find that some of them appear to have not actually happened yet and are instead due to happen "in 25 minutes"... :D

Right.

Thought we'd fixed that.

Thanks.

I've noticed one problem with using my print command. With the old FT site "print" would produce a printout of an entire page of the thread. I have my Cute PDF program listed as my default printer and this would give me a PDF of every page in a thread which I could then combine. Now, it no longer works: you just get one PDF page and the second is blank -- and nothing else.

Nice! Congrats on a successful migration. Just a couple of issues: Imagick is either not installed on your server, or it's off. While you get a new logo, may I suggest a transparent background with white fonts for the current one, like so:

Definitely what we would like (that's already agreed--we know the existing botch looks unsightly)

I rather like what you've done there, but we'll see what proposals our artistic director brings to the virtual meeting before anything is finalised.

Try to keep the CF logo if you can :).

I wasn't aware a multi-page 'capture' had ever been possible without using a specialized app dedicated to forum crawling and recording.

I'm not clear on what you're seeing. When you refer to getting 'one PDF page' do you mean one page of PDF output or one whole page of the thread as displayed?

My guess is that the new setup (involving cloud-based service) is constrained to operating page-by-page for the sake of efficiency.

The alternative theory would be that XenForo 2.X itself has been revised to serve up threads page-by-page in light of changing net protocols.

No, I didn't have any specialised program, although I couldn't do this when using Internet Explorer, only after I moved to Firefox. It worked on some sites but not others. I would press the print command and it would record a whole page of the thread as maybe 8-10 separate sheets. Pity it won't do it now (I don't have the knowledge to understand the detail you give).

Right, this is getting ridiculous. No matter how often I untick the boxes for NOT receiving e-mail notifications, I'm still getting my inbox stuffed with e-mail notifications. OK, not the worst thing in the world, but it is a nuisance to delete a hundred e-mails every time I log in to my mail account. How do I stop this happening, please?

Where are the boxes you're un-ticking to no avail? (Be specific ... )

The boxes having no effect are these two:

Receive news and update emails
Receive email when a new conversation message is received

Your Preferences are set to:

- Watch content on creation

Disable those two settings and see if the notifications continue.

Would it be possible to make the "Threads below have not been updated since your last visit " break appear a little larger/darker/bolder?

If such a change would involve more than a quick tweak to one or two lines of code, please disregard this message.

It certainly isn't a major problem in the cosmic scheme of things and not a big enough deal to justify an overhaul of the entire site, but it would make life a little easier for my old eyes. Thanks for all you do to keep the ship afloat.

It's on the list already, I believe.

It hasn't been really noticable because downtime has been absolutely minimal, but Rev_Dino has done a couple of upgrades, which should, I suppose, increase stability and security. Once he has us up to date, there's a list of requests for him to work through as time allows.

Just a silly question, really, but I couldn't find anything under my Preferences Panel...anyone know if there's a way to get posts to open in a new tab?

I know reddit has this feature, so I figured I'd ask.

No. The presentation of linked pages is controlled on the client side, not the server side. If you want each new page to open in a tab you need to use or configure a browser to use that protocol.

Just a heads up: I tried to access the board from mainland China a few times using mobile data public Wifi and hotel WiFi etc. In about 50% of cases I couldn't access the board because my IP address was banned.

Presumably this is blanket geographical IP banning and presumably anti-spam, but I'm worried it may discourage posters from that part of the world, of which we have a few.

Curious.

It could be a default that came with the setup, but we haven't explicitly banned any Chinese IP ranges to my knowledge.
