Most Haunted Places In Your Home Town

While it is true that I do not see as well as I did when younger. With glasses I'm still rated 20/20.

The bathroom in my house was put in only 15 years ago. It was made from an upstairs bedroom. My house was built in 1857; that is before the civil war. Originally it had no indoor toilets. When I bought the house it had an add on bath that literally fell off the house when the remodelers started to emplace a new bathroom. A few years later we remoldeled an upstairs bedroom into an upstairs bathroom. It's probably one of the best lit rooms on the house; plus it has large windows, one on the east side and the other on the western side of the house. Because it is a bathroom the windows do have long, light curtains. The bath is one room that has been modernized and really does not property fit the pre-civil war décor of most of the rest of the house. But any bathroom we put in would have been out of place for the year the house was built. People of that period (especially on the frontier) used the outhouse. The old outhouse was wood and was pretty much gone by the time I purchased the property back in 1979.

I have a garden where the old outhouse once stood. As I said, there was a bath stuck onto the house when I bought it. It was removed shortly after we moved in. I have never owned a large dog. The miniature schnauzer is the only breed my wife and I have ever had, except for a very short time when we were keeping a golden retriever for some friends until they could take her. She was the only dog we kept outside. She had a deadly tail.

Sounds to me like you hope your shadow dog is a ghostly visitor.

Not in my home town, but in the neighbouring county, Lier. A closed down mental asylum.
Here's a YT video with some youths visiting the asylum.

The asylum is now being demolished to give room for new apartments.

Catseye: I have no real idea what to think. When the wife and I first moved to this house we were visited by what I think was a Jack Russell dog. It would appear and disappear in just a few moments. In my lifetime I have owned 7 dogs, all Schnauzers. Six have lived and died at this house. Upon occasion things have transpired that made us think perhaps one of them paid us a visit. We have seen a couple of other type dogs here that were not alive, or maybe we just have joined imaginations. But the bathroom effect is different from those others. Perhaps it is simply an eye trick. Just seems strange it is only in that one room. Do I believe dog spirits abound? I have no idea. Our minds can be very creative. As I was once told by a "ghost investigator" "No one believes in ghosts until they see one."

It is odd that it is just that one room. Although I have a dog that really enjoys lying on the cool of the bathroom floor in warm weather, maybe it's the coolest room in the house?

I would love to see the shade of my sadly-gone big dog. There has not been a hint of him since he went, but maybe a houseful of terriers is a deterrent to ghosts!

Thr shades have stopped. At least for now. I have no idea why. My personal pets have all been schnauzers. So far none of the shadows' appear to be schnauzers, they were quite realistic for a brief moment or two. We had a jack russell type when we first moved in. My wife and I saw him on several occasions. A couple of times we got a glance at what appeared to be schnauzers. One time the dog was large and shaggy . We've lived here since '79 so that a lot of years for just a few dog appearances.

Brig, I see that someone already advised you, but to make a very long story short, this forum is terminating on Oct 31. A new Forum will be in its place and we really really want you to be able to continue posting. I don't see your forum name ("Brig") on the list of those who have signed on to join the new Forum.

Please email [email protected] and in the subject line of the email just write Brig. Nothing else. This will send your email address to the small team that is working like gangbusters to make all this come together and they will be able to send you information on the new home. Please don't leave us.

lb8535: I tried to log in. I did everything they said needed to be done; however, the action was cancelled (I tried twice)' my email ************. I've had this E mail for years; but this site refuses to accept it. I have no other Email. After the change over takes place, perhaps you can just tell me how to get on the new site. I'm a computeridiot I can follow direction until a problem arises then I'm done in. I did not grow up with computers. In fact the first computers which came along shortly after I was born were as large as a two story house and only Harvard University and the U. S. Military had one. I will miss this forum.

Explicitly quoted email address deleted for the sake of user's security.

(It contained a typo - 'com' should be preceded by a period, not a comma.)

Brig: You're not wrong about the email address with which you registered, but you didn't quote it (above) in correct / workable form.

It's dot-com, not comma-com.

Edit to add: I've PM'd Carlos with your username and correct email address to get you added to the emergency email list.

Ok so EnolaGaia the Brig mission is accomplished? I can sleep easy. Thanks. I wait in awe to find out what happened in his house each week.

Brig, I have some of the same memory banks as you, I got thru college and grad school on a slide rule and my first calculator was the size of a thick paperback (and was a considerable investment decision.)

OK.....THANKS GUYS. I didn't even realize I'd hit the comma instead of the period. I guess it all comes to being a Neanderthal and old to boot. Golden years my aunt fanny. Put it off as long as possible.

A short article about the history and possible haunting of Cockatoo Island (in Sydney Harbour). Comes with a not terribly convincing ghost photo:

Cockatoo Island's bleak history comes back to haunt us

Cockatoo Island has existed in several different manifestations, if you'll permit the word. Convict gaol, industrial reformatory school for girls, heavy industry for shipbuilding and a naval dockyard.

Conditions were variously, along the way, described as appalling, dire and brutal. Not many convicts escaped. George Lucas, in charge of the girls' school, took away the beds as punishment and made them sleep on the cold stone flagging. Many of his charges were found to have bruises and lacerations.

Fertile territory, then, with enough deaths and tragedy documented over the island's history to merit a new "Graveyard Tour" that, coincidentally, begins tonight and will then run on Saturdays. It's after dark and for adults only.

I might do that tour.

Sorry I've been absent so long. First it was problems with the password. Then my wife went through a sick spell, leaving me t o run her store alone. I finally had to scrap the old computer and buy a Lap Top. It works differently from my old computer and it is taking a bit of time learning to use it. So all in all I;ve been mainly out of communication. Today was the first day I've managed to get on site. Once I get the hang of this thing I do have a couple of minor incidents to report on.

Glad to see you're finally back with us, Brig!

Good to hear from you Brig.

Welcome back, I hope your troubles are behind you.

Moving to St Albans and have already been told of a haunted ruined nunnery within walking distance. Residents have witnessed mysterious glowing lights emanating from the ruins.

Within a street away there’s also been multiple accounts of residents seeing a centurion.

In living memory two houses along our very same street have been struck by lightning!

I live in rural North Yorkshire. Very old village, probably occupied since the last Ice Age retreated. There are NO ghost stories about my village, or the nearby small town. In fact, I have to travel nearly ten miles before I hit the next 'haunted' place. Which makes me wonder - there must have been violent death, murder, high emotion etc in my little isolated community, we've got a church with Saxon origins and many old buildings (I live in one). So what does it take to get a ghost around here?

Nice to see you back, Brig.

My paternal grandparents used to live in Braintree MASS. Has anyone ever seen a Braintree? I am sure the one in Massachusetts was destroyed by enterprising investigators with flamethrowers in the 1920s. For the record, pretty much every state in the USA has an open carry policy for lit flamethrowers, and they are freely available in most good hardware stores.

About 12.5miles/20km south of Braintree is the edge of the Hockomock Swamp. We used to go picnicing there sometimes. It is also known as the Bridgewater Triangle. Here is the documentary about the lovely area:
Bridgewater Triangle

We certainly heard some odd sounds there, but didn't assume they were caused by Lovecraftian horrors. My bad. Apparently it is weirdness central for cryptids, cults and hauntings.

I used to live in Braintree Essex, and could have done with a flame thrower, especially on a Friday and Saturday night - that would have kept the monsters at bay, and allowed me to enjoy a civilised pint lol.

I know live about 8 miles north of Braintree, and from my living room window can see what was the old Bell Inn – now a private home but one of 9 pubs in the village in days gone by.

Its reputedly haunted by a spook that likes to pull the bed clothes of unsuspecting guests.

It’s listed on the Paranormal Database website.

Location: Sible Hedingham - The Bell Inn, 46 Swan Street
Type: Haunting Manifestation
Date / Time: 1970s
Further Comments: The lady haunts one of the building's bedrooms, and has been known to pull off the bed covers of any who sleep in her room

Well I don't believe in ghosts! :ghunt: but a shop I used to work in about 30 year ago was definitely haunted!

The building itself dated from the 1600's and is one of just a handful that old left in town. The shop part was relatively modern (at the time) but the 2 upper floor really were very rough. In fact the 2nd storey was out of bounds for safety. The 1st floor was used as a stock area and staff area. this was a small shop- when I say staff it was a total of 4 people, most times just 2 of you. Which meant you were often in the staffroom alone.
The amount of mysterious creaking and snuffling from the stockroom next door was most disturbing, but hey likely pigeons and rats etc.

But when things would go jumping off the shelves behind you, that wasn't rats. You could hear things crashing above you from inside the shop. My boss would try to make me go investigate (i was a teenager!). hell no! the shop sold household goods like pots and pans and crockery. Those saucepans made an almighty racket 'falling' off shelves.

It wasn't like, all the time, but occasionally enough to give everyone the willies.

I said I had had a couple weird episodes during my absence on line. Neither was especially extra ordinary. But I did say I'd report anything I considered weird .Both occurred in the upstairs main bedroom. I turned in about 9 o'clock and immediately noticed the bed shaking; kind of like someone rocking it. The bed is an old four poster and I could imagine someone rocking on one of the posts. Looking all around I saw nothing that could be causing that rhythmic rocking. The only other person in the room was my dog, Shadow, a ways from the bed. The shaking continued a good ten minutes or more giving me ample time to investigate. I found no cause. The shaking slowly subsided and stopped,

The second episode, a few nights later. My dog and I were alone in the house, My wife was staying with my goddaughter until she could walk better. My goddaughter's house is modern and on one floor, Anyway I had just turned in for the night, not quite 10pm. Shadow was curled up on her pillow in front of the heat register. I was reading a book when I heard a Slam, like a door. Such noises are fairly common here so I thought little about it. I always lock all of the exterior doors ( we only use the front a western side doors, the others are always locked.) So a few minutes later I hear what sounds like footsteps on the stairs. Had I been thinking I would have realized the steps sounded like hard soles on bare wood stairs. Our stairs are heavily carpeted. Thinking I had an intruder I unholstered the "Judge" and did a survey of the house. Clue 2 was my dog. She .quietly followed me in my quest. Any intruder would have met with a lot of noise. Of course I found nothing amiss. But such sounds will definitely get your attention. And ,of course, you always wonder "What IF..."

Wonder if it's still haunted? Someone'll know. You seriously need to make the acquaintance of whoever lives there now.

I’ve often wondered that myself escargot.

The guy who lives there now it not widely liked in the area due to the parties he holds in the summer months.

Its like living behind the set of a porn movie on occasion - that reminds me, I must pop out and buy a new telescope before June lol
