People Who Are Discovered Or Re-Surface After Long Disappearances

"We are unlikely to ever know what exactly Fan Bingbing underwent, but the implication is clear: if the authorities can get to the biggest celebrity in the land, they can get to anyone."

Just to prove it, they decided to nab the chief of Interpol - although they couldn't keep that one under wraps for long and had to admit they have nicked him. Plenty of time for them to have worked on him so he'll confess to anything they put in front of him though.

They aren't alone, of course. The Saudis are denying all knowledge of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who has gone missing in Istanbul, having been seen going into the embassy, but not leaving.

Are we at the point now where govts just do what they wish*, bump off opponents or dissidents in foreign countries, safe in the knowledge that as long as they aren't caught in the act, they can just claim to know nothing and get away with it? I guess they think that we all want to avoid open conflict so much that no-one will take action against them committing blatant state-sponsored crimes on foreign soil.
I fear this is all going to end in tears when some slighted nation decides to kick one of the big boys up the arse after the international community just shrugs its collective shoulders, despite knowing full well who has done what.

* I'm not suggesting that govts throughout the world, down through the ages, haven't bumped enemies off, or kidnapped them abroad, just that they seem to not give a flying fuck about covering their tracks these days.

She was abducted in 1986 so she wasn't part of the disappearances under the dictatorship.

An Argentine woman seized in the 1980s by people traffickers has been reunited with her family in a joint operation by Argentine and Bolivian police.

The whereabouts of the woman, who is now 45, had been unknown until earlier this year when police received a tip-off she was in Bermejo, south Bolivia. The police then located the house in which she was being held and freed her and her nine-year-old son. The names of the rescued mother and son have not been revealed.

You might be sick of your career, tired of your relationship, or you simply want to jet off somewhere and begin all over again.

Others might feel more drastic action is required.

Steve Rambam is a private investigator who specialises in locating missing people, including those who have faked their own death.

He estimates he has solved up to 750 suspected fake death cases during his career, with the number standing at "about 550 when I last counted 12 years ago".

A mystery may have been solved.

A 14-year-old boy who told police he had escaped from kidnappers is claiming to be Timmothy Pitzen, who went missing eight years ago.

Timmothy vanished in 2011 at the age of six after his mother's suicide in a motel in Rockford, Illinois. The teenager claiming to be Timmothy said that after escaping his kidnappers "he kept running across a bridge" into Kentucky. He was found walking alone in Newport, Kentucky, early yesterday morning - around 500 miles (800km) from where Timmothy went missing.

Police from Illinois are now on their way to Cincinnati in Ohio, close to where the boy was found, to meet him but are remaining cautious, saying:

"We've probably had thousands of tips of him popping up in different areas. We have no idea what we're driving down there for. It could be Pitzen. It could be a hoax."

The boy told officers that he had been kept at a Red Roof Inn by two men, although as there are a number of motels with that name in area, it's unclear which one he is referring to.

Sadly they are now saying dna proves he isn't.

indeed, hope raised and then dashed for the family.

A teen who told Kentucky police he was Timmothy Pitzen, an Illinois boy who went missing in 2011, is not the long-lost child, the FBI said on Thursday.

Hopes were briefly raised that the teen, who said he had escaped kidnappers, was Timmothy, last seen after his mother pulled him out of school in Aurora, a far-west suburb of Chicago, and then took her own life. But FBI officials in Kentucky and Ohio said DNA tests conducted at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital showed that the teen is not Timmothy.

“A local investigation continues into this person’s true identity,” Louisville FBI agent Tim Beam said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

Workers removing shelves and coolers from a former No Frills Supermarket in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in January discovered a body behind one of them.
The remains were recently identified as those of Larry Ely Murillo-Moncada, a former employee who had been reported missing November 28, 2009.

Investigators now believe that Murillo-Moncada went to the supermarket and climbed on top of the coolers. The space was used as storage for merchandise, Weddum said, and employees would sometimes go there to hide when they wanted to take an unofficial break.
He is thought to have fallen into the 18-inch gap between the back of the cooler and a wall, where he became trapped. Noise from the coolers' compressors may have concealed any attempts to call for help, according to Weddum.

What a bizarre and tragic death. You'd have thought that eventually his remains may have started to smell? This is a supermarket and if I picture correctly coolers put a lot of heat out of the back, which I'd have expected to hasten decomposition. Very sad and slightly puzzling.

There would have been no reason to look behind the coolers when he went missing and it would seem that those unofficial breaks must have been very rare indeed for his body not to have been discovered for so long (though I don't know from the story when the supermarket closed). My guess/supposition is that maybe he died or was seriously injured falling from the top of the cooler. I know coolers may make noise but I'm sure if I was conscious I'd be able to make a loud enough noise to be heard and, unless he was seriously injured or even paralysed from the fall, surely he'd be able to hit/kick/strike the back of the cooler - or throw stuff/clothing over the top.

It's a tragic story however you look at it.

Yup, I reckon falling down a way an 18-inch gap would be enough to jam you solid in there. He probably couldn't move his arms or bang for help or throw things though. Maybe he was unconscious soon after landing in there. One hopes so.

some wag opened a packet of ham and chucked it behind a chiller, a few years ago at work. i can tell you that started to smell pretty quickly. and opened, hidden foodstuffs of any kind quickly collect tiny flies. you soon know to start looking for something rotten.

all very odd.

Could, as he fell, have got impaled on one of the coolent rods which may have somehow broke preserving him for a while, something like embalming fluid

What is really amazing is that the fridges worked for 10 years straight without problems or without being moved around for maintenance.

That's a very good point ... However ...

Some larger (e.g., institutional / commercial) cooling systems consist of multiple modular components interconnected by pipes. There's a chance the 18" space behind the storage units wasn't necessarily where the heat exchanger or other apparatus was situated.

On the other hand ... It he'd ended up pinned in next to the heat exchange coils / radiators the constant heat might have desiccated the corpse and helped minimize telltale odors of decomposition.

Found after 22 years through Google Maps.

The remains of a man who went missing two decades ago in Florida have been found in a submerged car visible on Google Maps.

William Moldt, was reported missing from Lantana, Florida, on 7 November 1997. He failed to return home from a night out at a club when he was 40 years old. A missing person investigation was launched by police but the case went cold.

On 28 August this year - 22 years on - police were called to reports of a car found in a pond in Moon Bay Circle, Wellington. When the vehicle was pulled from the water, skeletal remains were found inside. One week later the remains were positively identified as belonging to Mr Moldt.

Mr Moldt's sunken car was spotted by a previous resident of the area after "doing a Google search", police said. The man then contacted a current resident of Moon Bay Circle to tell them what he had seen. Using his personal drone, the current resident confirmed there was a car in the pond and contacted police.

Didn't something similar happen a couple of years ago, when a car with long-missing teenagers inside was also found in a lake?

Man who claimed to be missing boy gets 2 years in prison

An Ohio man who claimed to be a child who disappeared at age 6 pleaded guilty Wednesday to aggravated identity theft and was sentenced to two years in prison, minus time served.

Brian Michael Rini, 24, of Medina, was also sentenced to one year of probation to be served at the end of his sentence. His prison sentence includes time served dating to April 4.

Rini, with a neatly trimmed beard, answered U.S. District Judge Michael Barrett with a soft “Yes, sir,” when asked if he understood the consequences of his plea.

Prosecutors dropped charges of lying to FBI agents.

Rini last year pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated identity theft and lying to FBI agents. He would have faced as many as eight years in prison if convicted of those charges.

Judge Barrett ruled Oct. 31 that Rini was competent to stand trial, after he underwent an evaluation in a federal facility in Chicago. ...

Police say Rini was wandering the streets of Newport, Kentucky, last April 3. Police said he told them he was Timmothy Pitzen, an Aurora, Illinois, boy who disappeared in 2011 at age 6. Authorities said Rini claimed he had just escaped captors who sexually abused him.

Federal authorities said they were suspicious after he refused to be fingerprinted. DNA testing quickly revealed his true identity. ...

A New Jersey woman who went MIA 6 years ago has been located. Her body was found in her van, submerged in a local river.
Body of woman who was missing for almost 6 years found in car submerged in NJ river

A body found in a submerged car here Thursday was a New Jersey woman reported missing almost six years ago.

Vanessa Smallwood, who was 46 at the time of her disappearance, was identified in a statement from New Jersey State Police. ...

Smallwood was last seen at a dry cleaner's store in Cherry Hill on Jan. 27, 2014, according to the FBI's missing-persons notice. ...

The woman's cellphone "recorded a ping" at about 10:20 a.m. in Clayton.

"Since that time there has been no activity from the victim, to include her credit/debit cards," the missing-persons notice said.

A description of the Smallwood's belongings included a silver wedding band.

Burlington Township police posted an online appeal for the public's help in finding Smallwood on March 3, 2014.

That notice said Smallwood had been reported missing by family members on Feb. 6, 2014.

Smallwood's remains were found around noon Thursday by commercial divers removing debris from the Salem River about 40 miles south of Cherry Hill, state police said.

State police removed the car from the river.

Smallwood's remains were taken to the Southern Regional Coroner's Office pending an autopsy.

"There is no additional information available at this time," police said Friday night.

Man reappears after five years.

A man police feared may have been murdered has been found hiding in a wood, five years after he disappeared.

Ricardas Puisys, then 35, of Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, was last seen at his workplace in September 2015. No trace of him was found, but in November last year a Facebook account was set up in his name.

Last month he was found in a Wisbech wood. Police believe he was in hiding to escape the clutches of people who had been exploiting him. He is now being safeguarded and a police investigation is under way. The last confirmed sighting of the Lithuanian national was at his workplace, Nightlayer Leek Company in Chatteris, on 26 September 2015. Mr Puisys had been with a small group of Lithuanian men at the time.

At least he will have a family burial.

A man whose remains lay undiscovered on public ground in south Dublin for almost a decade will receive a family burial after his distant relatives were traced.

The skeletal remains of Stephen Corrigan, who suffered from mental illness and had been homeless at times due to his condition, were discovered in April on a site off the Lower Rathmines Road, at Lissenfield. No effort had been made to conceal the remains, which were found by men carrying out work in the area, and foul play was ruled out.

The dead man’s mother, Hanna ‘Anna’ Corrigan, died aged 81 in November 2015, not knowing what had happened to her son, who went missing in November 2011, when he was 47.

However, she gave the Garda a sample of her DNA before she died and when the remains were discovered they were confirmed as those of her son.

Human remains found by fisherman near Burdekin River may have been there for 'years'

Human bones concealed in a tent on the banks of a Queensland river may have been there for years.

Queensland police are working to identify the skeletal remains that were found by fishermen on the banks of the Burdekin River in Dalbeg, southwest of Ayr, on Saturday.

Detective Inspector Chris Lawson said the bones were found on a high part of the river banks near a swag and in a tent. ...

"It is a very remote location along the Burdekin river and these are people who were just walking along looking for spots to fish.

"There was a tent located there as well."

Initial police investigations suggest the remains may have been there for a "significant" amount of time

"In terms of the timeline, it would be a significant period of time, I'd be estimating years," Inspector Lawson said.

Inspector Lawson said police had no leads on who the person is and were trawling through all missing person reports from recent years in the area. ...
