The Perfection: A stylish horror flick. Nothing supernatural, just the banality of human evil once again. A school for gifted young musicians turns out to have dark secrets. A pupil (Alison Williams) who had to leave due to family responsibilities meets with the woman (Logan Browning) who replaced her , now a virtuoso cellist. Remembering her own traumas she decides to save her. This turns out to be a rather gruesome rescue.

The film is related through flashbacks and sometimes what seems to have occurred may nor in fact be the truth. The film is riddled with unreliable narrators and there may be everyday explanations for some of the horrific events. There is the bus journey from hell where a suffering Browning pukes as Williams meets a language barrier as she seeks help. Betrayals come from all angles in a film which has quite a few disturbing scenes. A tale reminiscent of Black Swan in some ways but The Perfection has it's own unique blend of gore and psychological horror. Directed and co-written by Richard Shepard. 8/10. On Netflix.

Romina: Mexican teen Slasher film with a twist of I spit On Your Grave. Bunch of teens go to a lake to camp. A loner from their school is also there and two of the boys rape her. Vengeance is meted out to the guilty and to the innocent. Eyes gouged out with spoons, heads squashed, castrations. Not a good film but not as bad as a lot of the reviews make out. Not for the squeamish. 5/10.

Recorded{not taped, I get told off for saying that} Thelma last night on FilmFour. Too tired to finish it tonight, but I do like it.I must say I do like Scandinavian films{i'm waiting for the ooer missus remarks!}I really liked "Let the right one in/let me in"{both versions) and the book.

Thelma's pretty darn good, nice and mysterious from what I remember. The lead actress is very effective, in a spooky, "don't cross her" way.

Watched the 2008 horror "Train" starring Thora Birch last night.
It's a semi-remake of the Jamie Lee Curtis 1980 slasher "Terror Train", but goes off on a tangent with a sub-plot of that old Fortean staple and probable urban legend of organ theft. Torture porn and absolute bucket loads of blood (not to mention other bodily fluids). Certainly watchable, but could have done with a bit more black humour IMHO.
I'd rate it 3.5/5.

Ma: Teenagers do stupid things, in slasher films, even in this psychological horror thriller. Ma (Octavia Spencer) acts strange and gives enough warning signs for any rational person to avoid her. But when have 16 year olds ever been rational. I remember the days when Juliette Lewis was always a teen threatened by psychos bur now she is 40-something Erica who moves back to small town Ohio with her daughter Maggie (Diana Silvers). Maggie soon meets up with Andy (Corey Fogelmanis) and his friends. They meet middle-aged Ma who agrees to buy alcohol for the gang. Soon ma is hosting parties not just for them but for students from all over town.

Ma is more than just a lonely older woman, from flashbacks we see she is carrying a grudge and a desire for vengeance for events which occurred decades ago. The threat, fear, and violence gradually build up so that when a shockingly violent event occurs you are less startled, like a lobster in slowly heating water you have become inured. But there are some shocking scenes in this film and it certainly isn't for the fainthearted. A failing is that too much of Ma's motivation is revealed or at least hinted at early on in the movie; it would also have helped if Ma's manipulative behaviour had been more implicit. Still a good thriller which morphs into frightening horror. Directed and co-written by Tate Taylor on a budget of only $5 million. 8/10.

Who can take a classic 90s horror, sprinkle it with toxic fandom issues?
The Candyman Can

That's what Jordan Peele's Candyman remake/reboot is about, he says. Doesn't sound enormously entertaining, it has to be said, don't toxic fans get enough exposure online as it is?

For a moment I misread that as Jordan Peterson!

Possibly the least politically correct horror film of all time .. a horror comedy, but it's Bruce Campbell ..
