Thx fellas. It is sort of in keeping that I arrive back to you all discussing alcohol. A bit of a spirit-ual connection huh? On another note, I just did a bit of an info-dump on the Dyatlov Pass Incident, as I think I may have cracked it. I would appreciate the input of any interested parties to tear it to shreds and make me cry like a baby as it goes up in flames i.e. peer review. If you can be bothered, and it isn't tl;dr, see what you think.

Yeah I get that. Membership still makes sound financial sense though. I get cheap or even free entry to beer festivals and £20 worth of ale or cider vouchers to spend at Wetherspoons (except they sent me £40 by mistake last month!).

That was one of my issues - I never go into 'spoons (there isn't one in any of the towns I tend to drink in), and if I do pop into one while I'm further afield I always, without fail, have left the vouchers at home.

CAMRA seriously need to drag themselves into the 21st century. An app with the discounts on wouldn't be too much to ask.

And have you seen their forum? :tumble:

was slightly dismayed though to see that CAMRA, of which I've been a member for a great many years, has now banned any risqué beer names or suggestive badges on the beer pumps.
It's because women are less likely to buy a drink with a frankly insulting name. 'Legs Apart' or whatever.

Yet they seem to hoover down Slippery Nipples, Porn Star Martinis, Screaming Orgasms and Sloe Comfortable Screws.

Odd, that.

So no more of this:

Or of describing a beer as blonde, full-bodied and irresistible.

Just listening to BBC Radio 5 Live and a woman being interviewed has not only criticised the saucy imagery, but also having a go at retro, war-influenced beer art (Lancaster Bomber, The Bottle of Britain etc.).

My point about the beer names was not that 'saucy' ones were being Banned By The PC Brigade but the real reason, which is that they don't sell well to women. It's a commercial decision.

Belgian beer is in a class of its own.

Ever had these during your quest? Brewed by Trappist monks. The Trippel is amber coloured, Dubbel darker. Both fantastic, pretty pokey & very lively due to re-fermentation in the bottle, sometimes available in Waitrose, not sure about other outlets.

On looking it up on Wiki:

The majority of the workers in the brewery are no longer monks, but secular staff brought in from outside. There are 22 monks and 40 outside staff.
The brewery is in a Trappist abbey though. There's 5 other Belgian Trappist breweries of which I've tried Chimay, also very good.

But is it women in general, or just the shrill activists of Fem.Ale and Beerwithoutbeards who have their knickers in a twist about this?

You've actually been there? Cooool.
Well....Minnesota is only a 7 hour drive from me...and they lived there for a couple of years so we visited and drank craft beer from up that way... but Sam Adams brewery is in Boston.
I first drank the summer ale on tap in a small town tourist called Stillwater MN.

One of my favorite summer ales....

Oh yes, love a Westmalle. I've really enjoyed all the Trappist beers I've tried, but they can be lethal in the wrong hands.

I read about it in the Times yesterday. Real ale brewers have indeed reached the astounding conclusion I mentioned, that women are generally not amused by jokey beer names about titties. Hard to believe, I know.

Whatever happened to getting hammered and stealing a traffic cone as an expression of alcohol-related masculinity?
Masculinity not allowed.

This isn't something I've made up.
It's not my personal opinion which I have decided to foist upon others. It's not even a retelling of a tabloid story about hairy militant wimmin spoiling the boys' fun.
It's an observation by beer manufacturers about how to better market their product, reported in The Times.

Incidentally I find offensive the posting of a sign reading 'BULLSHIT' aimed at me personally. If anyone else did that it would incur a warning for bullying.

I was joking!

I believe you, but I was ironically pretending that I was a dumb beer-swilling knuckle-dragger that couldn't believe it.

So much for casual gender-joking ... Now here's a new drink that practically dares you to buy and imbibe it ... :boss:

Radioactive Grain from Chernobyl Has Been Distilled into Vodka

It's Chernobyl — in vodka form. ...

Made from Chernobyl aquifer water and radioactive rye, Atomik vodka is the first consumer product to come out of the Chernobyl exclusion zone in 33 years.

Thrill seekers visiting the ruins of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine may soon be able to take a piece of the site's radioactive history home with them — in their livers.

A team of scientists from the U.K. and Ukraine have just produced the first bottle of what they're calling Atomik vodka: artisanal spirits made from water and grain harvested in the reactor's once-forbidden exclusion zone.

... According to Anders Moller, a biologist who's spent several weeks a year studying the exclusion zone for the past few decades, local crops are often contaminated with radiation and can cause "serious problems" if ingested, Moller previously told Live Science.

Sure enough, the rye that the Atomik founders grew in the exclusion zone for their vodka tested positive for radiation. However, according to Atomik co-founder and University of Portsmouth professor Jim Smith, all traces of contamination disappear in the distillation process, during which the fermented liquid gets purified and water and other diluting substances are removed.

"Any chemist will tell you, when you distill something, impurities stay in the waste product," Smith told the BBC. (Radiation tests conducted by Smith's colleagues at the University of Southampton confirmed the product to be as safe as any other hard liquor.)

Just one bottle of Atomik vodka exists at the moment, but the founders hope to cap at least 500 others by year's end and sell them to thirsty Chernobyl tourists. According to Smith, 75% of the vodka's profits will go back to locals living in exclusion zone villages, which have seen scant economic development since the nuclear disaster 33 years ago.

"After 30 years, I think the most important thing in the area is actually economic development, not the radioactivity," Smith told the BBC.

Atomik vodka is the first consumer product to come from the exclusion zone since the meltdown, the BBC reported. Apparently, it tastes like rye whiskey with "fruity notes."

Apparently, it's not radioactive. The distillation process removes the last traces.

Must be one o' them things that don't come across quite right on the interwebs.

I do like the bullshit GIF. Mind if I borrow it?

Brilliant session at the Great British Beerfest last night and only feeling slightly hungover this morning!

My friends were all aware of the directive from the new forces governing CAMRA to prohibit any suggestive imagery and we therefore set ourselves the task of trying to find any subversive images that managed to slip through the net.

Sadly, it seems that the humourless harpies of Fem.Ale and Beer Without Beards have largely succeeded in making the GBBF a less fun and colourful place.

The seaside postcard style beer badges had largely gone. Even the legendary Twickenham Naked Ladies ale was present in text only. Some of the continental beers seemed unaffected, with their usual gaudy but attractive labels, but otherwise very few even remotely saucy images were present:

That the profit driven decision makers have done this suggests that it is widespread.
