Dybbuk / Dibbuk Boxes: From Scroll Cabinet To Ghost-Hunting Fad

Interesting to see that what, in 2004, was a single, supposedly haunted, artefact (the dybbuk box), has in 2018 become 'dybbuk boxes', some sort of wider species of general ghostly 'thing'. Guff from start to finish, then.
Even Buzzfeed is testing the fad by buying boxes on Ebay. Received a box which wasn't even sealed, and a lantern(?).

Most seem to call them a Dybbuk box I never thought of calling it one but then I guess it sounds like one.

Tale about the Old Antique Haunted, small wooden chest.

Most of you will think this is nonsense. This is the story, believe it or not.

About 30 some years ago I moved to a small cottage in a village near Hull. The day we moved in it was already a cold miserable feeling but I just put it down to it being derelict for several years. It needed a lot doing to it to make it liveable but I was much younger then and up for the task. After I unpacked I got started. Straight away, room after room I cleared out, cleaned and some I re-plastered and replaced woodwork. It took weeks. When I got to the master bedroom it had an old iron fire surround which looked amazing, but the chimney was boarded up. I carefully removed the board, behind it was all the fire place parts the old Victorian style kind. Amongst the clutter was a small scrap of paper, which seemed to be written by a rabbi.

It spoke of an old box but I couldn't see one. I had a feel around in the opening but found nothing. It was cold and wet out so I thought I would light a fire in the newly opened hearth. No sooner had I done so, the room filled with smoke. After opening the sash window and attempting to put my fire out I figured there must be a nest that had fallen down the chimney. I felt around in the back of the chimney and I discovered an old sooty looking box. I gave it a bit of a clean. It looked very very old indeed, and was wax sealed on the front. I re-read the old rabbis letter. It said It can't be given away destroyed or hidden but must be sold or traded to pass ownership. It advised about not opening the box as its cursed. I thought "yea right! heard that garbage before" but I resisted opening it any way.

I put it on the side & left it there. So this is when things started to happen, up to you if you believe me or not but it's the truth.

That night the house was unusually cold, I know that's what everyone says about a haunting but it wasn't that the boiler had gone strange as it was less than a year old so I have 24/7 cover and I called out the emergency engineer who was there for hours but couldn't find a fault. The next day he returned with a friend neither of them could work it out. They agreed to replace the boiler.

I had some old heaters so used them for a while.

The next thing I noticed was a slight but nasty smell kind of eggy, I keep finding things broken or disappeared only little things but as a non-believer it freaks me out, its no joke but now I'm a convert.

There is definitely something about this box it's creepy, smelly & weird stuff happens.

So if you don't believe in this sort of stuff I hope you enjoyed my tale but if you do believe I will likely be telling more tales about the spooky goings on, they get too numerous to mention them all.

'Amongst the clutter was a small scrap of paper, which seemed to be written by a rabbi.'
do rabbis have a particular, distinctive handwriting that makes their messages easy to identify?
is there a source for this, apparently quoted, story? Otherwise it's nonsense. As I said a few posts back, what was one, specific, supposedly cursed, box, called by its owners The Dybbuk Box, in 2004, has now mutated into an urban legend in which 'dybbuk boxes' are A Thing. Which they weren't 15years ago.

What is the source of this text?

The bold title and italics suggest a quotation, but I cannot locate it on the Internet.

Is it a personal tale from you yourself?

Yes its my own story, in the accompanying note I found it was signed Rabbi Rashi Halvi as far as Im aware Dybbuk boxes are only from that film, but a medium and ghost hunter friend of mine told me they also did private exorcisms so from time to time one pops up some real most probably fake or over embellished stories.

Is there a sub-forum for totally fictional accounts where these all belong rather than cluttering up a more serious thread?

I'm not saying that you are right and I'm not saying you are wrong, but in the absence of evidence of fraud or mendacity, the only productive approach is a cautious assumption of good faith.

If you have grounds for believing any of these accounts are fictional, please present it and we will take action if appropriate.

Seems odd that the Rabbi's note said it couldn't be hidden yet it was hidden in the chimney. He seems to have contradicted his own pronouncement.

And what happened to this box, seeing as this happened 30 years ago. Have you still got it or did you sell or trade it, did you look inside & if so, what was in it?

There are probably a few fictional stories on It Happened To Me that we don't know are made up. I think we managed to find out a few of them through the years.

What a load of old crap. The worst thing Knock Once For Yes podcast did was cover this. https://knockonceforyes.com/

From the original story about the box now they are 10 a penny on ebay.

Yes, old boxes can be a bit strange but it doesn't mean they all have some Hebrew curse.

Tiktoker ( ) finds mystery box, complete with clichéd, theatrical pentagram carved on it.

A week later, guess what? He only goes and finds the key to the box somewhere else! By smashing a seven-years-bad-luck mirror!

Inside the box, guess what? There’s only another key!

Next week…

maximus otter
Next week he finds a gateway to an enchanted kingdom.

I once left a box full of fake occult stuff behind a little door that let to a crawlspace In my student house in Leeds in the 90s. It also contained a key for a lock cellar room where i had set up an altar to a spider god created by Clark Ashton Smith. The results were ace. Altar burned in back yard and not one but two full exorcisms of the house.
