Rivers & Lakes That Change Colours

I asked an acid mine drainage expert about opaque blue water. It happens when there is high dissolved metals in the water, such as aluminum. The fish would not die instantly. A sudden upwards change in pH would cause the water to turn this color. A spill of caustic soda would cause localized fish kill but change the water downstream as it gets diluted.

So, who are the shits responsible for it? Anybody heard anything?

Word is that somebody dropped 'surprise mechanics' in the river.

Please can you share the source of your word - my inferior Googling skills got me nowhere, no 'official' updates yet :)

The latest from the depths of Somerset, from https://www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/somerset-news/cause-pollution-turned-river-frome-3288009

"The government organisation has found that water-based ink caused the river to change colour.

The bright shade of the Rodden Lake Stream in Frome garnered national attention last month when the investigation was initially launched.
The Environment Agency also added it was taking action against the party behind the pollution. A spokesman said the ink resulted in little environmental impact. It has also been confirmed that no fish or wildlife died.

Asked if action would be taken against the responsible party, the spokesman said: “Yes, proportional to the severity of the incident.

"They will also receive a recharge for our time investigating the incident.”

As the case is still active, the agency has not disclosed the source of the ink."

Looks like someone dumped some water-based dye in the river, maybe for larks or because they are commonsensically-challenged.

On the vaguely same topic, this is completely natural:

The Red River in Cusco, Peru:

Explanation:
Having its source in the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain, the Red River in Cusco is a treat to the eyes. The color of the water runs a pinkish red due to the iron oxides that form a large part of the region’s soil. While it remains a muddy brown through most of the year, the Red River emerges to claim its true beauty during the rainy season.

South Korean river turns red after being polluted with pigs' blood

A river near the inter-Korean border has turned red after being polluted with blood from pig carcasses.

South Korean authorities had culled 47,000 pigs in an attempt to halt the spread of African swine fever (ASF).

Heavy rains caused blood to flow from a border burial site into a tributary of the Imjin River.

African swine fever is highly contagious and incurable, with a near zero survival rate for infected pigs, but it is not dangerous to humans.

Local authorities dismissed concerns that the blood could cause the spread of African swine fever to other at-risk animals, saying the pigs had already been disinfected before being slaughtered.

Lonar Lake in India - within an ancient meteorite crater - changed color from green to reddish pink "overnight."

A Meteorite Crater Lake in India Just Mysteriously Changed Colour Overnight

A crater lake in India's western Maharashtra state has turned pink overnight, delighting nature enthusiasts and surprising experts who attributed it to changing salinity levels and the presence of algae in the water.

Lonar lake, formed some 50,000 years after a meteorite crashed into Earth, is located 500 kilometres (310 miles) from India's financial capital Mumbai and is a popular hotspot for tourists and environmentalists.

As photos of the lake's new flamingo-hued waters began to circulate on social media, experts said that although Lonar had changed colour in the past, the transformation had never been so sharp before. ...

"Salinity in the lake has increased as water level has gone down drastically this year and it has become warmer too resulting in overgrowth of algae," geologist Gajanan Kharat said in a video posted by the state-run Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation on Twitter.

"This algae turns reddish in warmer temperatures and hence the lake turned pink overnight," Kharat explained. ...
