This is an interesting tale: three suspicious deaths, missing children, a cult based on apocalyptic teachings.

The US mother whose two young children have been missing for months has been arrested in Hawaii amid a complicated search operation spanning the US.

Lori Daybell, 46, left for Hawaii in November after police in Idaho had questioned her about her children, who officers say are in danger.
The mysterious case includes three suspicious deaths.

Mrs Daybell has reportedly been linked to a doomsday cult-like religious group, according to US media reports.
She is faces two counts of child abandonment and is being held on a $5m (£3.8m) bail on the island of Kauai.

She moved to Idaho from Arizona in late August after her then-husband, Charles Vallow, was shot dead by her brother, Alex Cox.
Cox claimed the shooting had been in self defence. He died of unknown causes in December.

According to divorce documents filed by her late husband before his death, Mrs Daybell believes she is "a god assigned to carry out the work of the 144,000 at Christ's second coming in July 2020".

She also allegedly threatened to kill him if he got in her way, claiming she had "an angel there to help her dispose of the body". He took out a protective order following the threat, court documents show.

He described her as "infatuated and, at times, obsessive about near-death experiences and spiritual visions", and said she refused to see a therapist because "they would discover that she is a translated being".

Mrs Daybell remarried - to Chad Daybell - in October.

Mr Daybell is an author who has written several apocalyptic novels that are loosely based on Mormon religious teachings.

Both he and Mrs Daybell have been involved in a group that promotes preparing for the apocalypse.

The organisation, Preparing A People, has denied being a "cult" despite claims by the parents of Mrs Daybell's late husband.

Two weeks before his marriage to Mrs Daybell, his previous wife, Tammy Daybell, died.
According to her obituary, Tammy Daybell died of natural causes. After the quick remarriage, police became suspicious and ordered her body exhumed.

Make a good movie?

Is there any update or further discussion of the whereabouts and fate of the children?

I am still none the wiser as to how one prepares a people cult. What is a people cult, and how is it prepared?

Edit: Thanks for the brackets and clarification Ramon. The absurdist editor's work is done! Away!

Update: Lori (Vallow) Daybell has elected to not fight extradition, and she will be transported back to Idaho. The whereabouts of her 2 childrean remain a mystery.

NOTE: It's not clear whether the mother's legal name is now Vallow or Daybell. She's been cited under both names since this story began.
Lori Vallow, mother of missing children, will be returned to Idaho

The mother of two children who have been missing for months has decided not to fight extradition from Hawaii to Idaho.

Lori Vallow, 46, was arrested last week and faces multiple charges, including two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of children, according to a criminal complaint filed in an Idaho court.

Vallow chose to waive extradition to "expediate her return there, so she can defend herself against these false accusations," attorney Craig De Costa said at a hearing Wednesday.

The missing children, Tylee Ryan, 17, and Joshua "J.J." Vallow, 7, were last seen in September. Vallow and her husband fled Idaho when investigators started looking into their disappearance, police have said.

The mother of two missing children has been arrested by police officers in Hawaii on a warrant issued by Madison County, Idaho, according to a statement from law enforcement.
Lori Vallow, 46, was arrested on multiple charges, including on suspicion of two felony counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children, Kauai police said.

Joshua "JJ" Vallow, 7, and his sister, Tylee Ryan, 17, were last heard from in September. About two months later, Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, fled their Rexburg, Idaho, home when authorities began looking for the children, police previously said.
[...]
The couple were found in Hawaii in January and served with a search warrant. Vallow was given a deadline to turn the children over to authorities, a court order served by police said. She failed to meet it, according to a grandmother of one of the children.
[...]
Vallow moved to Idaho with the children and married Daybell shortly after her estranged husband was killed in July in their former home state, Arizona, authorities have said.
On November 26, after relatives raised concern about not hearing from JJ since September, police conducted a welfare check at the couple's Rexburg home and were told by Vallow and Daybell that the boy had been staying with a family friend back in Arizona.
[...]
The disappearances followed other investigations authorities had conducted around the family -- one of them was into the death of Vallow's estranged husband, who was shot and killed during a fight with her brother in Arizona.
Vallow's brother was not charged in the case and died in December. His cause of death has not been released, and an investigation is pending the results of an autopsy.
Vallow moved to Idaho shortly after and married Daybell, who had links to a religious content website.
Vallow's former husband had said she had "recently become infatuated and at times obsessive about near death experiences and spiritual visions," according to a petition for dissolution of marriage filed last February.
Authorities are also investigating the death of Daybell's previous wife, Tammy Daybell. Her death was initially believed to be of natural causes, but Rexburg police later said it was suspicious and her remains were exhumed.
Vallow and Daybell were married a few weeks after her death, police said.

Daybell first visited Self Storage Plus on Oct. 1 and signed a $53-per-month rental agreement for a 10×10 unit, according to a contract reviewed by EastIdahoNews.com. Surveillance cameras at the facility show Daybell and a man associated with her visited the unit nine times in October and once in November. Often the man, who appears to be Alex Cox, Daybell’s brother, came alone.
Security footage shows she only came to the business by herself once — on the day she signed the contract. Over the next two days, she returned with the man who appears to be Cox. His silver pickup truck is observed at Self Storage Plus on camera multiple times during October.

Inside the storage unit, officers found bikes, a scooter, winter clothing, a photo album with pictures of JJ and Tylee, sports equipment, a backpack with JJ’s initials and a jersey with Colby Ryan’s (Lori Daybell’s oldest son) name on it. I have a lot of questions!

This sounds very bad indeed for those children. I'm picturing a lonely shallow grave. Let's hope I'm wrong.

If she has done away with them because her new man didn't want them, you'd have expected their uncle to notice how dangerous things were getting and step in to save them. Seems that's far from the case.

Posts about this unfolding case (in two different sections) have now been consolidated in this single thread. It's placed in Mainstream News Stories pending further developments suggesting where it might be more appropriately or finally located (e.g., Fortean Crime; Religions & Cults).

It would have helped to allay fears if he had actually presented the children to the reporter.

The step-father of two Idaho children missing since September told a reporter over the weekend that “the kids are safe” ― a rare public comment from the Doomsday author.

Chad Daybell, the writer of several books about the end of times, reportedly made the tantalizing assertion to ABC News as he left Hawaii, where his wife Lori Vallow is in custody on charges related to her children’s disappearance. Daybell reportedly didn’t elaborate on the whereabouts of Tylee Ryan, 17, and Joshua “JJ” Vallow, 7.

The children’s grandfather, Larry Woodcock, said he’ll take Daybell at his word.

“I just think that we have to believe that they’re safe,” Woodcock told ABC News after Daybell’s remark.

Daybell and Vallow have not publicly said where the children are. Authorities have repeatedly accused them of not cooperating with the investigation and lying.

It's become a murder investigation.

An Idaho mother whose two children have been missing since September is the subject of a suspected murder investigation along with her newlywed husband, new information shows.

Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell, who’s a Christian doomsday author, are being investigated for conspiracy, attempted murder and murder, according to a letter signed last week by the Idaho attorney general’s office and the Fremont County prosecutor’s office in Idaho. The letter does not identify the victim by name, though multiple outlets, including The Associated Press, have identified the individual as Daybell’s former wife, Tammy Daybell, who died last October.

The county prosecutor’s office had requested the AG’s assistance due to a lack of resources and experience to handle the case, according to a letter sent by Fremont County prosecutor Marcia Murdoch and obtained by East Idaho News.

Sad news.

Police investigating the disappearance of two children in Idaho last year have found what they believe to be human remains.

Joshua "JJ" Vallow, who was then seven, and his sister Tylee Ryan, 17, have not been seen since September 2019. Their mother, Lori Daybell, was arrested in Hawaii in February. The remains were discovered at the home of Mrs Daybell's current husband, Chad Daybell, but have not yet been identified. Mr Daybell is an author who has written several apocalyptic novels loosely based on Mormon religious teachings, and the couple have been involved in a group that promotes preparing for the apocalypse. The organisation, Preparing A People, has denied being a "cult".

Three suspicious deaths have also been linked to the case.

Oh no. I was hoping that somehow one of them was telling the truth that the children were "safe" but in a apocalyptic cult already being dead and gone might be a [their] definition of 'safe.

Relatives have stated the human remains discovered in Idaho are indeed those of the two missing children. Whether subsequent analyses / autopsies will confirm this is (I suppose) still an open issue.
Relatives: Bodies found are 2 kids missing since September

Relatives of two children missing since September said Wednesday that the bodies of two kids uncovered in rural Idaho are the young boy and his big sister, whose mother and her husband are behind bars in the case that has seized global attention.

Authorities have not released the identities of the bodies discovered on the property of Chad Daybell, who married the children’s mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, a few weeks after the kids were last seen.

But Joshua “JJ” Vallow’s grandfather Larry Woodcock told the Post Register in Idaho Falls that “both children are no longer with us,” also referring to 17-year-old Tylee Ryan. ...

Extended family members of both children sent a joint statement to Phoenix television station KSAZ-TV confirming the deaths and asking for privacy.

UPI is now reporting the remains have been "identified" as the missing children, and they cite this claim as coming from "prosecutors" as well as family members.
Idaho remains identified as missing children

Prosecutors and family members identified human remains found at an Idaho home where a man was arrested Tuesday as two children who have been missing since September.

The remains of Tylee Ryan, 17, and Joshua, "J.J." Vallow, 7, were identified after investigators with warrants searched the Rexburg, Idaho, property of their stepfather, apocalyptic "doomsday" author Chad Daybell, and took him into custody Tuesday. ...

Idaho police confirmed the two sets of human remains found at Chad Daybell's home were those of two missing children who had not been seen since September, according to a news release issued Saturday.

Daybell is married to Lori Vallow, the mother of the children, 17-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow.

A search warrant was executed Tuesday at Daybell's home in Fremont County, near the Wyoming border, where the remains were found. After being taken to the medical examiner's office, the bodies were identified as JJ and Tylee. ...

Thank you for updating the thread for us. I had a feeling that this would be the result but it is so sad nonetheless. Divine judgement/Karma/Universal balance will see to this pair I think. Their own personal armageddon as the world doesn't end but theirs becomes very painful as they emerge from their delusion.

Court documents have been unsealed to reveal additional details on how the authorities located the missing children's remains ...
Documents: Cellphone pings helped find children’s bodies

Authorities used cellphone information from the now-deceased uncle of two missing Idaho children to find the youths’ bodies on a rural property earlier this month, according to court documents.

Police found the remains of 17-year-old Tylee Ryan and her brother, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow, on June 9 after months of searching. They hadn’t been seen since September and investigators said the children’s mother Lori Vallow Daybell and her husband Chad Daybell lied to police about the children’s whereabouts.

KBOI reported that court documents made public late Friday reveal that the FBI tracked the cellphone of Alex Cox, Vallow’s brother and JJ and Tylee’s uncle. ...

The FBI tracked Cox’s cellphone on Daybell’s property four times during the month of September. According to court documents, Cox’s phone pinged on Sept. 6, 9, 23 and 25 at the location where the remains were found.

Neighbors also confirmed they saw fires on the property around Sept. 6 and 9, which they said was unusual because a fire pit on the property was hardly used, according to court documents.

Chad Daybell has pleaded not guilty to destroying evidence. Lori Daybell has been in jail since February, charged with child abandonment and obstructing the investigation. Both Daybells are being held on $1 million bond, and both are scheduled for preliminary hearings next month. ...

Update.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The mother of two kids who were found dead last year in Idaho and her new husband have been charged with murder in a grim case involving bizarre doomsday religious beliefs and two other suspicious deaths.

Lori Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell were each indicted by a grand jury Monday on charges of conspiracy, murder and grand theft in connection with the deaths of Lori Daybell’s two youngest children, 7-year-old Joshua “JJ” Vallow and 17-year-old Tylee Ryan.

Chad Daybell was also charged with one count of murder and insurance fraud in connection with the death of his late wife, Tammy Daybell, just weeks before his marriage to the co-defendant.

The indictment, released Tuesday, doesn’t reveal any details of how the three victims died. But it does say that both Chad and Lori Daybell endorsed and espoused specific religious beliefs in order to justify or encourage the killing of her two children and Chad Daybell’s late wife. They were missing for several months starting in 2019 until last year when authorities found their bodies buried on Chad Daybell’s property. ...

Lori has been ruled "unfit to stand trial" on the basis of mental instability.
BOLLOCKS!!!!!

Wait, maybe she is actually God. :omg:

Daybell pleads not guilty.

An Idaho man has pled not guilty to murdering his first wife and his two step-children from his second marriage, exactly one year after the children’s bodies were found buried in his backyard.

Chad Daybell, 52, pled not guilty Wednesday in a Freemont County Court to all charges related to the 2019 deaths of JJ Vallow, 7; Tylee Ryan, 17; and his ex-wife, Tammy Daybell.

His pleas came one day after his wife, Lori Vallow-Daybell — the mother of the two deceased children — was committed to a psychiatric facility by a judge for 90 days in hopes of making her competent to stand trial. Late last month, the court deemed her unfit to stand trial for the murder of her children, for which she also faces charges.
