Animal Escapes

Antelope elope.

Two African antelope yesterday escaped from a wildlife park dubbed “Britain’s worst zoo”.

Borth Wild Animal Kingdom warned the public to “remain calm” and not to approach the two lechwe, which had jumped a fence and ran into the surrounding town. It is the latest incident to hit the scandal-hit zoo, which is closed due to coronavirus. In 2017, two lynx were killed as a result of mistakes made by the zoo within a fortnight of each other.

Late last night it said the escaped male antelope, with “big horns, but not aggressive”, had been found, darted and returned to the zoo, near Aberystwyth, west Wales.

These idiots seem to keep letting animals escape - I can't believe they're still allowed to keep lions.

Wild Animal Kingdom is Britain's no.1 go-to place for new cryptids.
You're not far off the truth - when one of their lynx escaped we were told they could travel 20 miles a day iirc. I was counting the days off hoping to see it but it was sadly shot not far from the park.

Serval captured after two weeks on the loose in Japanese city

July 13 (UPI) -- Officials in a Japanese city said a serval, an exotic cat native to Africa, was captured after about two weeks on the loose.

The City of Shizuoka said the 1-year-old cat, which was being kept as an exotic pet in the city, escaped June 27 and was on the loose for over two weeks before being captured Monday. Officials said a witness spotted the serval wandering near Shizuoka Heliport, more than half a mile from its owner's home, and alerted authorities. The cat was safely captured without injury.

Officials said the serval's owner told authorities the cat had been acting agitated and escaped when the owner opened its cage to check on it. Servals require permits to be kept in the city, officials said. It was unclear whether the cat's owner had a permit for the animal or whether it would be returned to the owner.

Serial escape artiste bear "Papillon" is in the wind - again ...
Serial runaway bear nicknamed 'Papillon' is on the loose again in Italy

A brown bear nicknamed "Papillon" after displaying an impressive talent for escaping is being sought by rangers in Italy after fleeing from his electrified pen.

Officially named M49, the four-year-old bear broke free from his enclosure in the province of Trento, northern Italy, in the early hours of Monday morning.

A spokesman for the region's local government confirmed to CNN that the bear ... has "fled his cage multiple times." ...

"Papillon" ... was first recaptured on April 28, but escaped again a few hours later from the fenced area. ...

Once returned to captivity, the animal was castrated in a bid to "calm him down," according to the spokesman for the local authority.

But the procedure failed to live up to expectations as the bear is now once again missing from the 9,000 square meter enclosure that he shared with a female bear. It is believed his most recent escape took place between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. on Monday. ...

The spokesman said: "The fence was fortified and despite that he was able to break through the very resistant fence that was partially electric, he had a desire to escape stronger than a 6,000 volt fence."

He added: "The problem is he is too wild and has a strong instinct to return to the forest." ...

Police patrol picks up penguin.

A penguin waddling through a village has been picked up by police officers on a routine patrol.

They were on patrol in Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire, when they spotted the Humboldt penguin in a village street in the early hours of Sunday.

The bird, nicknamed Po-Po, had escaped from a farm enclosure in Strelley and then managed to waddle a mile up the road.

Police stuck their beak in and the penguin was returned to its owner.

PC Gareth Philp said they nicknamed the penguin Po-Po after "he posed for some pictures with us and he was very friendly with our officers".

Serial escape artiste bear "Papillon" is in the wind - again ...

Update:

Papillon is back in custody after 42 days on the loose ...
'Papillon' the escape artist bear recaptured after 42 days on the loose

A brown bear dubbed "Papillon" after repeated escapes from its enclosure in Italy was recaptured 42 days after its most recent escape.

Papillon, a 4-year-old male bear officially known as M49, escaped from its enclosure at the Casteller wildlife park in Trentino province July 27 by climbing over three electrified fences and breaking through a barrier of metal bears. ...

Authorities tracked the bruin's movements in the wild and it was captured in a live trap in the Lagorai area of Trentino province. The bear was on the loose for 42 days. ...

The provincial government said Papillon had lost about 88 pounds during his time on the loose, which apparently allowed the animal to slip free of its radio tracking collar in recent weeks.

The bear was returned to Casteller, where officials said work is underway to strengthen the enclosure and prevent future escapes. ...

Papillon had previously escaped twice in 2020. Officials said he was recaptured from a previous escape in April, and the bear escaped again only hours later with a female bear from the park.

Buddy the escaped Connecticut beefalo has been captured after 250 days on the lam.
After months on lam, slaughterhouse escapee beefalo caught

After more than 250 days on the run, an 800- to 900-pound (360- to 410-kilogram) beefalo that has been roaming the woods in western Connecticut since it escaped on its way to a slaughterhouse has been captured, police said.

The beefalo — a cross between a bison and domestic cattle — eluded its handlers on Aug. 3, while being loaded off a truck at a meat processing business in Plymouth.

Nicknamed “Buddy,” his adventures, including appearances on a wildlife camera set up by police and failed attempts to lure him into a pen with food, gained widespread attention and inspired the creation of several social media accounts in his name. ...

Plymouth police announced his apprehension on Wednesday ...

Buddy had wandered onto a farm in town and was hanging out with some cows when the farm owner snagged him and eventually got him into a trailer ...

“His capture was the result of a community effort from spotting him, feeding him throughout the winter and to the experts who were able to make the final capture,” police said in the post. “We would like to thank all those would brought this adventure to a successful resolution.”

Authorities decided early on in their search not to seek the death penalty for Buddy and have raised money for his continued care. ...

Park only reported it's escape after a week had elapsed.

Authorities in China are searching for a leopard that escaped from a wildlife park near the eastern city of Hangzhou more than a week ago.

The animal was one of three leopards to escape from Hangzhou Safari Park. Two were recaptured over the weekend. According to state media, locals reported seeing the animals as early as 1 May, but the park only confirmed they were missing on Saturday. It has since apologised for the delay, adding that it wanted to avoid panic.

Video footage posted to social media site Weibo last week appeared to show a leopard in a tea plantation.

On 8 May, the local government confirmed on Weibo that two of the animals had been recaptured. But one leopard remains at large.

A search team is using hunting dogs and drones. A drone spotted the leopard on Sunday but the animal fled the scene when people tried to approach it, the Global Times reports.

Escaped elephants leave 500km trail of destruction in China

A herd of 15 elephants have caused destruction in south-western China, including eating whole fields of corn and smashing up barns, after escaping from a nature reserve in April.

Over the past week, the animals have also drained a water tank and plagued villagers worried about their crops, state broadcaster CCTV said.

It was unclear why the wild Asian elephants, a protected species in China, strayed from the Xishuangbanna national nature reserve in Yunnan province.

But since April, the animals have embarked on a 500km journey, closely monitored by residents and authorities, with hundreds of people mobilised to ensure public safety.

On Tuesday, Yunnan authorities said the herd was 20km from the provincial capital of Kunming, home to millions of people.

Since mid-April, the elephants have wrecked around 56 hectares of crops, causing an estimated 6.8m yuan ($1.07m) in losses, CCTV said.

No casualties have been reported so far, with locals attempting to guide the animals with food and by blocking roads with trucks.

The wild elephant population in Yunnan is around 300, up from 193 in the 1980s, reported Xinhua.

Giant Tortoise Escape

Titan the giant tortoise managed to make it about a mile across town before being apprehended by police.

He weighs in at a whopping nine stone (60kg), & was found in Kesgrave, near Ipswich, on Friday.

It took three police officers to lift the wayward pet into a van and drive him home to his worried owner.

Suffolk Police said they were called by a member of the public to reports of the giant tortoise on the loose in Dr Watson's Lane in the town, at about 14:25 BST on Friday.

Richard Aston said it was a "mystery" how Titan made it that far as he had not broken through his shelter. "Maybe he teleported there," he said.

"There was no sign of the fence being broken, and he can't jump over it - it's three feet high," he said.

He said it was "a bit of a mystery" how Titan, who measures about one metre (40in) across, had ended up in a road about a mile from his home.

"It's just another of his adventures," he said.

Wallaby hops off.

A young wallaby has escaped into the countryside from its new petting zoo home in Aberdeenshire.

Eddie, who is about six months old, only arrived at Waulkmill Menagerie, New Deer, on Sunday. However, he escaped through a small hole on Monday.

Nikki Johnstone, who runs the attraction, said he was last seen outside a New Deer pub. Anyone who spots Eddie is asked to close him in rather than try to chase him. She said he escaped through a small hole in a fence, and was last seen heading north in the direction of Cuminestown and Turriff.

"He'll be fine with grass and whatever plants he can forage", she told BBC Scotland. "The cold is a bit of a worry factor because he is so little, he would need a heat lamp during our winters."

A wallaby which went walkabout from a farm over 10 days ago has evaded the latest attempt to capture him.

Ant, who shares an enclosure with pal Dec, went solo when he disappeared from Tiny Steps Petting Farm near Bourne, Lincolnshire, earlier this month.Staff said they resorted to laying a humane trap after two previous attempts to catch the escaped marsupial failed.
Volunteer Bret Whitcombe said although the trap had worked, Ant escaped by kicking it open and fleeing once again.

Mr Whitcombe said Ant, who was originally reported missing on 5 January, was found in the humane trap on Saturday morning.
"We managed to get him out of the wooded area he was in just in time for him to kick and break the trap, so he's now on the loose again," he said.

"He's causing us lots of problems, bless him."

Crested Caracara escaped from London Zoo

Dog walkers have been warned to stay away from areas where Jester had been spotted across West London, with sightings in Richmond Park and South Ealing, and was last spotted on Barnes Common

Jester, the crested caracara, has a 4ft wingspan but is not a danger to the public.

However, experts have urged dog owners to beware as this type of US falcon is usually seen walking on the ground searching for food.

The bird of prey has been spotted across West London, with sightings in South Ealing and Richmond Park.
Jester is thought to have escaped by flying off over Regent’s Park during training last Tuesday and has not returned since flying off eight days ago.

The plan to coax Jester back into the zoo is by using a travel crate using her favourite food - quail and crickets.

Whilst Jester has been away for eight days, the zoo are confident she is more than able to equip herself with the right food in order to survive, the zoo commented: “Caracaras are well equipped for surviving in an urban environment.

"Rather like a crow or magpie, they are primarily scavengers, eating carrion, insects, and grubs or food out of bins.”

Flamingo No. 492, an escapee from a Kansas zoo, was recently spotted in Texas - 17 years after it made its getaway one dark and stormy night ...
Flamingo that escaped Kansas zoo in 2005 spotted in Texas

One of two flamingos that escaped from a Kansas zoo during a storm 17 years ago has been spotted on the coast of Texas, wildlife officials said.

The Coastal Fisheries division of Texas Parks and Wildlife confirmed Tuesday to The Associated Press that the African flamingo — known as No. 492 because of the number on its leg band — was captured on video shot March 10 by an environmental activist near Port Lavaca, Texas, at Rhodes Point in Cox Bay. Officials were able to make out the bird’s leg band on the video.

The bird and another flamingo escaped from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita on a stormy night in June 2005. Employees had not yet clipped the birds’ wings to prevent them from flying, which facilitated their escape.

While the other flamingo was never seen again, No. 492 has been spotted several times in Wisconsin, Louisiana and Texas, sometimes with other wild flamingos. But it had been years since its last reported sighting — until this month. ...

I used to think that red pandas were as big as the black and white ones, when two red pandas escaped from Belfast zoo I was wondering why it was so difficult to track them down.

A red panda that spent two days on the run after escaping from an Australian zoo was recaptured Sunday after he was spotted hanging out in a fig tree in a nearby park.

Ravi, seven, had arrived at Adelaide Zoo last week after being brought in from another zoo in the hope that he would pair up with a female red panda named Mishry.

But by Friday, Ravi was gone.

Adelaide Zoo director Phil Ainsley told the Australian Broadcasting Corp that zookeepers spent Sunday trying to entice Ravi down from the fig tree with some of his favourite foods, including bamboo and sweetcorn, to no avail.
