Oops! The Silly Mistakes Thread

That, unfortunately, is EXACTLY the sort of thing I am liable to do when not paying attention!
Yup, when I carry coffee cups and my phone into the kitchen I have to think 'Cups - left hand. Phone - right. Cups - left hand. Phone - right. Cups - left hand. Phone - right.' in case I chuck the phone in the sink.

CNN forgot to close pornhub tab ...

The video is a fake ...
A silly clip went viral Friday morning that appears to show a notification from porn website Pornhub popping up on CNN's magic wall.

The clip has been cleverly edited to look like King quickly swipes the notification away and the result is pretty humorous. ...

Uploaded by an unverified Twitter account, the video has no audio and if you look closely, the Pornhub notification doesn't actually appear on the magic screen, but instead sort of floats over it, making it clear that it was edited in. ...

The guy having a quick 'thank' on Zoom, did the people just sit there listening didn't they shout and tell him or at least turn the sound off?

I hope this is allowed - it made me laugh. We'll see..

Instead of booking the Four Seasons Five Star Hotel with conference facilities for a press announcement, someone in the President's employ booked the Four Seasons Total Landscaping company - situated between an adult book shop & a funeral parlour.

As a result he ducked out of it & Giuliani did it instead - in a car park, in front of a garage door. Much hilarity ensued.

I'm guessing that the employee was on the way out anyway.

Came across this, which is fun.

These are science’s Top 10 erroneous results

To err is human, which is really not a very good excuse.

And to err as a scientist is worse, of course, because depending on science is supposed to be the best way for people to make sure they’re right.

But since scientists are human (most of them, anyway), even science is never free from error. In fact, mistakes are fairly common in science, and most scientists tell you they wouldn’t have it any other way.

That’s because making mistakes is often the best path to progress. An erroneous experiment may inspire further experiments that not only correct the original error, but also identify new previously unsuspected truths.

No. 8 was funny, where neutrinos seemed to have travelled faster than light. Nobody actually believed this but the measurement stood until it could be explained by an equipment malfunction.

It's my favourite because our very own Escet, Snailet of Physics, was a postdoc at CERN back then and it fell to him to write the collaboration email which broke the news to the world.

He told me he had to word it very carefully indeed, being conscious that its content could have caused people to collapse and die of shock! :chuckle:

When I were a lad it was tachyons that travelled faster than light, - you couldn't measure where they are, only where they had been (in the 1960s apparently).
No.3 (Age of the Earth) is my personal favourite, because fictional Professor Lidenbroch (ie Jules Verne) in Journey to the Centre of the Earth talks at length about discussions with his good friend Sir Humphrey Davies in the 1860's upon this very subject.

Tachyons are still theoretical particles that travel faster than light. No one ever really though that the neutrinos has done that, even the team that got the result. They published the data and all of the supporting material and asked the rest of the scientific world to have a look and see if they could spot where the problem was (IIRC). And they did.

I hope their business improves because of that!

It's very difficult to save face when it's covered in so much egg ... Earlier this month Thai authorities announced what could have been the largest single drug bust ever (in terms of street value). Unfortunately, the bags they believed to contain ketamine actually held other - benign / legal contents. The $1 billion 'gotcha' became a $1 billion 'oops' ...

Thailand's $1 billion ketamine bust a 'misunderstanding' as officials fail to find drugs

Thailand's claim to have seized almost $1 billion in contraband ketamine this month was wrong and tests have so far not shown up any drugs, the justice minister said on Tuesday.

Somsak Thepsuthin said tests which turned purple in the presence of ketamine hydrochloride reacted the same to trisodium phosphate -- a chemical which can be used as a food additive and cleaning agent which is all that had been found so far.

"This was a misunderstanding that our agency must accept," he told reporters. "This wasn't a mistake. It's new knowledge."

He said testing continued. Some 66 of 475 bags had been tested by Sunday.

Thailand's Office of the Narcotics Control Board had announced the seizure on November 12 and said that it pointed to a multinational drug network. ...

Um, shouldn't that still be illegal? o_O

Legitimate product—as opposed to illegitimate—oh, where am I going with this?
There is an indication here of moralistic import customs . . .
But I suppose white vinegar is also a cleanser and a food additive. :thought:

This reunion could have gone badly, but luckily it all worked out.

Hopefully helpful hint ... When you're meeting the biological father you never knew for the very first time, and you're wearing a costume to set the reunion scene with reference to a popular movie ... It helps if the father has seen the movie or otherwise recognizes the gag.
Scene from ‘Elf’ comes to life as Buddy meets dad in Boston

Just like a real-life movie, the story of Buddy the Elf meeting his biological father has come to life, just in time for the holidays.

Doug Henning wore a costume like the one actor Will Ferrell’s character wore in “Elf” while meeting his father face to face for the first time last week at Boston’s Logan Airport. He even broke into the same awkward song from the 2003 movie — sample lyrics: “I’m here, with my dad. And we never met, and he wants me to sing him a song!”

“When he came out of the airport, he probably thought I was a lunatic,” Henning, 43, of Eliot, Maine, told Boston.com. “It was a really good way to break the ice.” ...

His biological father didn’t get the joke because he hadn’t seen the movie, which is about a man raised at the North Pole who meets his dad for the first time. But that didn’t stop him from giving his son a big hug.

Henning said he was raised by “amazing” adoptive parents but he was excited when cousins he met through ancestry.com helped to put him in touch with his biological father. Just like the movie, the father didn’t know about his son. ...
