Amid immense interest in space explorations and presence of life beyond the Earth, people were left in a frenzy after a New York Times report claimed “Fields of Watermelons Found On Mars”. Although the American news organisation was quick to delete the article and calling it an error, it didn’t stop netizens from having a blast online.
On Tuesday afternoon, the article appeared on site attributing the claim to the police. “Authorities say rise of fruit aliens is to blame for glut of outer space watermelons,” read the story, which was deleted less than an hour later. However, it got indexed on Google News.
“The FBI declined to comment on reports of watermelons raining down, but confirmed that kiwis have been intercepted. This story is terribly boring,” the story read, according to screenshots going viral across social media platforms. “Watermelon taste good, police say,” the report added.

A Pownal man faces charges after he shot himself in the hand and then lied about it to the police.
... John Wallner, 34, of Pownal, was treated at an Amsterdam, New York, hospital for a gunshot wound to his hand.
Wallner initially claimed he was shot in New York, but then said he was shot in Pownal, near Barber Pond. He also claimed he didn’t realize he was wounded, thinking it was possibly a bee sting. Police say Wallner lied several times about the incident before finally admitting he shot himself while cleaning his gun.
At this time, it’s believed the shooting did not occur in Vermont, but police continue to investigate. Wallner faces charges of giving false information to law enforcement.
To me as a Brit, this is rather incomprehensible.Shooting yourself in the hand while cleaning your gun is a silly enough mistake to make. The even sillier (and more serious) mistake is lying (repeatedly!) to the police about where and how you got the gunshot wound.

Here's the big difference: in the UK everything he did with that gun would be illegal because we are just not allowed them.
Brits can own sporting rifles and shotguns, subject to licensing, but not handguns.

You can't even own a water pistol or toy Colt 45 if you're going to 'open carry' them in case someone spots you with it, panics and calls the police. This has happened.Just out of curiosity - could any Americans reading this tell me what you think the law is regarding having guns of any sort here in the UK?
I only ask because quite often (not on the FTMB mind) I see comments from American citizens which give the impression that they think that here in the UK we are for some reason allowed to have handguns, or firearms in general, and/or that the police are all armed, similar to in the US.

Don’t Athletic Olympic shooters get to own handguns?95% correct.
Certain categories of ordinary people can own certain types of handgun, e.g.:
a) Black powder, muzzle-loading handguns can be owned on a Firearm Certificate.
b) Deer stalkers, for example, are legally allowed to own metallic cartridge handguns (the kind everyone here is thinking about) for humane destruction of injured deer, though few pursue this option.
c) Air pistols (muzzle energy up to 6ft-lbs.) are free for anyone over 18 to purchase. Over 6ft-lbs. you’d require an FAC (see above).
