Global Warming & Climate Change: The Phenomenon

They're simply being reported as if they are extraordinary and then picked up by someone with an axe to grind, agenda to promote, etc.
Ran a search for more related background and this came up:

Record-breaking temperatures in the Arctic, what this means for climate change

17 July, 2020

Q&A with Prof Martin Siegert on the impacts of a six-month Siberian heatwave, which scientists say would have been impossible without global warming.

A record-breaking heatwave in Siberia in the Arctic Circle has seen temperatures over the past six months reach as high as 38°C, and 5°C above the average for the region.

Professor Martin Siegert, Co-Director of the Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment at Imperial College london, was interviewed by BBC News about a report by scientists from the UK Met Office, who say the worrying situation have been impossible without global warming.

Question: What exactly is, 'The Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment'?

The answer:

"The Grantham Institute - Climate Change and the Environment was launched in February 2007 with the announcement of a multi-million pound donation from the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment".

https://www.imperial.ac.uk/grantham/about-us/the-grantham-foundation/

What is, 'The Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the of the Environment'?

The explanation:

"The Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment was established in 1997 by Jeremy and Hannelore Grantham.

(...)

Jeremy is co-founder and Chairman of investment management firm GMO, LLC.

Jeremy was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2016, and received with Hannelore the Carnegie Medal for Philanthropy in 2017, all for leadership in climate change activities".

https://www.granthamfoundation.org/

Therefore, in essence we only have one agenda, founded on an enormous donation from a wealthy couple.

It certainly doesn't come across like that in the BBC news report.

Where is any alternative viewpoint, given a fair opportunity?

Point being that you are highlighting my personal disquiet about the entire premise.

'It's been the warmest/coldest since recorded in...1800/1900, whatever...'

So, there is a precedent way back then and without, 'global warming'?
Illustrating my point:

Record breaking temperatures recorded in Arctic Russia

The Barents Observer
22 June, 2021

Sunday saw a slew of record-breaking temperatures in Arctic Russia, as a persistent heatwave continues to sweep Siberia, especially in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia).

In Saskylah, a small community in the Arctic Circle, the air temperature reached 31.9 C, the highest record since 1936.

(...)

https://thebarentsobserver.com/en/c... Circle, the,surface temperature reached 39 C.

So, a similar temperature was recorded in 1936?

Interesting revelation that a sun-driven cooling period may be ahead...
At the end of the day he that pays the piper calls the tune,
Global warming my a@#e...

Although this particular article does not attribute the anomaly to global warming/climate change, given that we have been discussing recent record temperatures...

Devastating 'Heat Dome' Keeps Shattering Extreme Temp Records in North America

sciencealert.com
28 June, 2021

A "heat dome" over western Canada and the US Pacific northwest sent temperatures soaring to new highs, triggering heat warnings from Oregon to Canada's Arctic territories on Sunday.

More than 40 new temperature highs were recorded in British Columbia over the weekend, including in the ski resort town of Whistler. And the high pressure ridge trapping warm air in the region is expected to continue breaking records throughout the week.

Environment Canada issued alerts for British Columbia, Alberta, and parts of Saskatchewan, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.

"A prolonged, dangerous, and historic heat wave will persist through this week," it said in the warnings.

"Afternoon high temperatures will climb to the mid 30's today (Sunday), and will peak near 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in some regions by midweek."

These temperatures are 10-15 degrees Celsius hotter than normal.

The US National Weather Service issued a similar warning about a "dangerous heat wave" that could see record temperatures rise to more than 30 degrees Fahrenheit above normal in parts of Washington and Oregon states.

Does make you wonder...

The north western U.S. is having a hard time with the heat.

The pavement is buckling, pets are dying, electric lines are melting.

It is claimed that climate change is slowing down systems moving across the country, and this is called the Omega Block.

It's even worse in Canada, almost 50 degrees C and it's killed 130 people so far:
News story

That's like tropical conditions, in Canada! And the hottest town isn't much further south than London.

People are describing British Columbia, Canada beaches as a SciFi end of the world movie.

The 125 F or about 52 C temperatures have killed millions of shellfish that have washed up on the beaches.

The ecosystem will have a hard time to recover as another heat dome is building across the same area.

These temperatures are not supposed to be in this part of the world.

Seeing as pigs are so closely related to humans it's only appropriate that they are worsening climate change. The carbon dioxide emissions that they produce annually, the authors concluded, equal that of more than a million cars. Could we convert them to electric?

THERE IS NO agent of ecological imperialism more ferocious than the wild pig.

Wherever Europeans invaded, from the Americas to Australia, so did their pigs, many of which escaped into the countryside to wreak havoc. The beasts tear through native plants and animals, they spread disease, they destroy crops, and they reconstruct whole ecosystems in their wake. They’re not so much pests as they are chaos embodied.

Now add climate change to the wild pig’s résumé of destruction. In their never-ending search for food, the pigs root through soils, churning the dirt like a farmer tills fields. Scientists already knew, to some extent, that this releases the carbon that’s locked in the soil, but researchers in Australia, New Zealand, and the US have now calculated how much soil wild pigs may be disturbing worldwide. The carbon dioxide emissions that they produce annually, the authors concluded, equal that of more than a million cars. ...

They're not very good drivers....in fact they're road hogs.....

Funny how they never mention methane. It's always the CO2. One-track minds!

There's already electric sheep for androids to dream of, so I dont see why not.

Just a random thought. There were supposed to have been loads of dinosaurs. Did they produce lots of emissions?

They drove around in huge cars and ate LOTS of meat.

Domestic animals now get blamed for passing gas and increasing global warming so I wondered about then.

Months of November instead of a Spring? :tumble:

A week of hot weather in July? “We’re all going to die!

I think the Megasaurus (Mega-sore-arse, geddit?) did.

Jokes aside, it was a combination of massive flatulence from megafauna and rotting vegetation.
Methane is a bigger problem than carbon dioxide, although large amounts of both were being emitted back then.
Fewer trees and less vegetation today, so actually a smaller methane problem today than it was during the reign of the dinosaurs (because of less rotting vegetation). Even so, planting more trees is definitely a way to improve the atmosphere and the climate.

Don't go coming here with facts and science - you'll only upset people.....

Temperatures during July were the highest this year since records began.

I don’t know what a ‘running, centered 13 month average’ is - do you? If so, please elucidate. I see a steady upward trend though.

Dr Roy Spencer who said this:

In the book The Evolution Crisis, Spencer wrote, "I finally became convinced that the theory of creation actually had a much better scientific basis than the theory of evolution, for the creation model was actually better able to explain the physical and biological complexity in the world. [...] Science has startled us with its many discoveries and advances, but it has hit a brick wall in its attempt to rid itself of the need for a creator and designer.”

Really..

Do you agree with him in this respect?

No reply? Think I’m on ignore. I’ll take it as a ‘no’ on both counts though.

We can always rely on max to turn up with a graph he’s dredged up from somewhere or other which ‘proves’ something or other.

You're not the only one. He constantly posts stuff and never replies when challenged.

A "centered moving average' means you take the average for an entire timespan (presumably spanning multiple data points) and chart it at the center of the timespan depiction. In this case, the red centered peaks within each of the years' spans represent overall averages for the spanned data points for the entire given year. There isn't (and can't be) any centered moving average for 2021 because the year's not completed and all the data necessary to calculate the average hasn't been collected yet.
