Canine Forteana (Dogs' Weirdness & Wonders)

Doggies Dance! Vid at link.

A dachshund disco, featuring a doggy dance floor and special treats including "pupuccinos", has taken place in a city centre bar.

Organisers James Morgan and Anushka Fernando said they wanted to help dogs socialise again after lockdown.

In 2017 their pug, Bertie, needed life-saving surgery and was crate-rested - meaning he rested in a dog cage - for much of his recovery.

Mr Morgan said the experience left him wanting to make dogs' lives as enjoyable as possible.

"We're trying to make it the best day ever for the dog because you don't know how long they've got and you've got to make the most of it," said Mr Morgan.

Oregon dog's 12-inch ears earn Guinness World Record

An Oregon woman's black and tan coonhound earned a Guinness World Record when each of her ears was measured at 12.38 inches long.

Guinness said Lou, a 3-year-old canine belonging to Paige Olsen, officially has the longest ears on a dog (living). ...

"All black and tan coonhounds have beautiful long ears, some are just longer than others," Olsen, a veterinary technician, told Guinness.

Olsen said Lou's especially long ears have not led to any medical complications for the canine. ...

In case you've wondered how fast a dog could run the bases on a regulation baseball field ...
Dog runs Dodger Stadium bases in 21.06 seconds for Guinness World Record

A Jack Russell terrier broke a Guinness World Record when he ran the bases at Dodger Stadium in only 21.06 seconds.

Lori Signs, owner and trainer of the canine, named Macho, put balloons at each of the bases to motivate the dog to touch each base in order to pop them as he passed. ...

Macho managed to beat the goal time of 24 seconds set by Guinness. The dog was awarded a certificate for the fastest time for a dog to run the bases at a Major League Baseball stadium.

"He was perfect," Signs said. "He hit a grand slam home run. It was amazing. I am so proud."

Signs said Macho was rewarded for his record-breaking achievement with a dinner of prime rib.

Somewhat quicker than the human players, methinks

As it turns out - nope ... The fastest human sprint around all the bases is a record that's stood for over 90 years.
Ernest Evar Swanson (October 15, 1902 in DeKalb, Illinois – July 17, 1973 in Galesburg, Illinois), was a professional baseball and football player. He played outfielder in the Major Leagues from 1929 to 1934. ...

Swanson was one of the fastest men in baseball in his time. During a contest held on September 15, 1929 between games of a doubleheader, he circled the bases in 13.3 seconds and that record still stands. (Some sources claim his time was 13.4.) A year later, on September 21, 1930, in a minor league field meet in Columbus, Ohio, Swanson circled the bases in 13.2 seconds, giving him both the fastest time as minor leaguer. ...

Faster than a dog! How is that even possible?

Crikey i stand corrected that’s bloody quick. Most of the major league players i’ve seen look quite portly and i just assumed they had always been not-needing-to-be-very-quick but that is shifting!
It surprised me, too ... When I went looking for clues to a fastest human round-the-bases run I was stunned when I read about Swanson.

I also kicked myself for falling victim to modernist myopia - i.e., assuming present-day humans are the crown of creation, better-performing than our ancestors.

Swanson's an interesting case ... He was a notably successful amateur and professional athlete, but he never held any sports records of the sort most commonly cited (e.g., most home runs, etc.).

Finley, the dog that holds 6 tennis balls in its mouth, sets Guinness World Record

It's official: Finley's a Guinness World Record Holder.

Finley Molloy, a 6-year-old golden retriever from Canandaigua, Ontario County, has finally been recognized for his adorable, preternatural talent of holding six tennis balls in his mouth at once.

After submitting various pieces of evidence for an extensive application process that stretched out for more than a year, Finley's family received an email last week confirming that all their hard work had paid off.

Though Finley never seemed to mind the process, his family's relieved that they no longer have to remember to pull out their phones and record when he starts picking up tennis balls in the backyard.

And that, Molloy said, was certainly worth celebrating.

Naturally, a socially distanced "pawty" was in order.

Finley's family got a cake and invited the neighbors and some of Finley's closest dog pals over to hang out in the yard on Sunday.

Konrad Lorenz claimed the only way to hurt a dog was to whack it on the nose.

That may not be true but they certainly are stronger than a human.
I have heard that the best defence against a large and angry dog is a stout broom with stiff bristles applied to the nose. I'm not volunteering to try it.

A small dog is pretty simple, just grab it by the scruff.

Bull terriers, bulldogs and the like - sorry, no good plan.

His name may be Bond but this greyhound is no secret agent.

The paranormal dog detective has been working with Manchester-based investigators Paranormal Rescue to try to solve supernatural mysteries.

Bond's handler Brian Sterling-Vete said he had been a "very good sensing piece of equipment" on their ghost-hunting missions.

"Far better than the electronic equipment in many ways because he automatically senses things and lets us know," he added.

Woof justice.

A judge in Spain has granted joint custody of a dog to a separated couple who went to court to determine who the pet should live with.

The Madrid court considered that both parties were "jointly responsible" and "co-caretakers" of Panda the dog. A lawyer who brought the case to court said it was a "pioneering" ruling.

Spain is currently drafting new legislation so that animals are no longer considered objects and are legally recognised as living beings. This status would make it easier for a partner to request joint custody of a pet following a breakup.

But Lola García, from the Law & Animals law firm, brought this case to court under the 1987 European Convention for the Protection of Pet Animals, which Spain ratified in 2017.

She said it was a "pioneering ruling" because her client was able to declare herself not as a "co-owner" of Panda but as "co-responsible" and as a "co-carer".

Not sure where this belongs, so mods please move if you wish.

Dogs and their owners can be dangerous and weird stuff happens: decades ago, my ex-husband and I were cross country skiing in northern Arizona out in the wilderness. We were completely alone. It was beautiful and dead quiet. He returned to our truck a few moments before me. Unexpectedly, l heard him screaming and what sounded like loud growling. I thought bear? But it was in the dead of winter so not bear. I quickly skied around a hill to see him on the ground near our truck, each arm in the mouth of a St. Bernard. The two dogs were shaking him like a rag doll. No owners in sight, but another truck was now parked a hundred feet away from ours.

I was convinced immediately that the dogs would kill him. And just as quickly decided I would have to injure or kill the dogs to save him, and how I would do it. I undid my skis and grabbed one ski and one pole and ran to him shouting as loudly as I could to distract the dogs. I intended to blind the dogs with the pole, and then bludgeon them. If I could get just one dog off him, he then could help in his own defense with the other. I was not scared, oddly enough. I was just very focused. I am usually really afraid before and after an emergency, but not during it.

Just as I got to my husband, the dogs’ stupid owners (two young men, badly dressed for the conditions) emerged from behind a stand of trees, called off their dogs and then were ANGRY with my husband for provoking the dogs. WTF. They did not apologize or acknowledge that their dogs were dangerous. They were, perhaps unremarkably from their ownership of large, dangerously aggressive and uncontrolled dogs, offended and aggressive themselves!

My husband was badly shaken, stiff and sore for a week. His jacket was shredded. The whole incident lasted less than one minute. I threw up on the way home from the adrenalin.

Outfoxed by a shady pet shop owner, this story will run and run.

A family in Peru who thought they had bought a dog soon realised they had a fox on their hands after it attacked other animals in their neighbourhood.

The Sotelos bought the puppy for $13 (£9.50) from a small shop in the capital, Lima, believing it was a purebred husky.m But after a while, they received complaints from neighbours about their so-called dog named Run Run. The canine impostor has since been caught by wildlife officials.

It became clear there was a case of mistaken identity when Run Run began to chase guinea pigs, chickens and ducks to kill or eat them, provoking the anger of neighbours.

"About a month ago, a woman from around here said that it ate three of her guinea pigs. And then two or three days ago, a local grandmother came and said that it killed guinea pigs," owner Maribel Sotelo told Reuters news agency.

Run Run turned out to be an Andean fox, which has thin legs, a bushy tail, a pointed head and prominent ears. ...

From Twitter: "Last night the dog kept breaking into the nursery and waking the baby. She’s been sick, and I was getting so fed up with him. Until she stopped breathing. We spent the night in the hospital. I don’t know what would have happened if he hadn’t woken her. We don’t deserve dogs."

Millie the dog clears up litter in Hereford

Owner Alfie Kitson, 80, only has to point at something on the ground and say ‘put that in the bin’ and the Spanish podenco obliges.

She was taught the trick while living in Spain with Alfie and his wife Judith, 75, and has been putting her skills to good use since moving back to the UK 18 months ago.
‘A few people ask me why I do it but I enjoy it and so does Millie, plus it’s helping keep the city clean and tidy, which is our little good deed.

‘All I have to say is, “Put that litter in the bin” and she will pick it up and do it. Passers-by seem to love it and she always gets a little round of applause.

‘She makes a real fuss of it and seems to love the limelight — it’s incredible to see all these people enjoy what we’re doing. She plays up to the audience, and so do I, if I’m honest.’

Alfie taught five-year-old Millie the trick after rescuing her from a shelter in Spain and says all he wants is to put a smile on someone’s face with the trick.

She was just a puppy when she was found abandoned in a rubbish bag tied to a tree branch with her two brothers.

Why the red jersey?
Well, some color must be used, unless the dog coat is made with invisible materials which does not reflect light rays. I think the red looks good with the black fur. Maybe red is a popular color for dogs in Spain. Maybe the dog got it as a gift and doesn't want to offend the giver by not wearing it. Maybe the dog or the owner is color-blind. Maybe..... :)

He bow-wowed to Prince Philip.

The mascot dog of Staffordshire Regimental Association is getting a town hall funeral with soldier pallbearers after 13 years' service.

The black Staffordshire bull terrier, known as Watchman V, died on 13 January and will be buried on Monday following a service in Burton upon Trent.

He had met nearly all the Royal Family and once "bowed" to the Duke of Edinburgh, handler Greg Hedges said.

"Hundreds paid their respects on his Facebook page when he died," he added.

Watchman V - also known as Somme - is the fifth mascot the Staffordshire Regimental Association has had since World War Two, attending more than 900 events. He was given the freedom of towns including Tamworth, Newcastle-under-Lyme and Uttoxeter and had two streets in the county named after him.
