Rooster attacks man on Queens street

A Queens man is speaking out after being attacked on his way to work, not by a person, a dog, or even a rat, but by an angry rooster.

Leon Suseran was on his way to work when he was attacked from behind. The vein on his hand punctured, his pain was outmatched by surprise to find out who he was being attacked by… a rooster.

"I turned around and saw blood gushing out," Suseran Leon said about the unusual assault. "I had to deal with his blood gushing out and I had to deal with this animal that kept charging at me."

As Suseran applied pressure to the wound to try to stop the bleeding, the rooster kept coming at him. ...

Despite Leon’s 6’2" build and his kicks, the rooster was unrelenting. Ultimately, he was able to outrun his attacker and call 911. ...

A beaver in Utah felled a tree (as beavers do ... ) and knocked out power to almost a thousand customers. The power outage didn't last all that long, and the beaver was trapped (photo at the link below).
Beaver caused power outage in Logan Sunday

A beaver caused a Sunday afternoon power outage in Logan that affected nearly 1,000 customers.

“This past Sunday afternoon, there was a power outage in Logan City affecting approximately 980 customers on the Island area,” said a Facebook post from Logan City Government. “Light and power crews were dispatched and within 41 minutes, all but eight customers were back in power.” ...

... “Sunday, Oct. 3, a beaver between the Boulevard and Canyon Road dropped a large tree that landed on power lines which in turn knocked out the power to much of the Island area. Our outstanding power crews were able to fix the problem and determine the cause of the problem.”

By Monday the crews had cut many more trees down and cleaned up the area ...

Human Resource Director for the City of Logan Ambrie Darley was contacted to see if her and her spouse were interested in trapping the beaver and by Tuesday morning they had captured the culprit. ...

Whats the problem? They would just have to run faster.

A Parkrun event due to take place in North Lincolnshire this weekend has been cancelled due to the danger posed by a pair of wild rutting stags.

The red deer stags have made their way into the grounds of Normanby Hall, near Scunthorpe, and have been trying to enter its deer park.
Staff at the hall believe the wild stags want to join in as other stags within the fenced-off woodland park challenge each other for dominance.
The wood has been temporarily closed.

In rutting season, stags challenge each other and fight to see who is the dominant male, which means the deer are likely to be aggressive.

Normanby Hall Country Park, which is owned by North Lincolnshire Council, said on its website: "These incoming stags are wild animals and can be unpredictable, especially during the rutting season. They are the UK's largest land mammal, usually between 5.5ft and 8.5ft in length and weighing up to 190kg. Their behaviour can become erratic and is a threat to public safety. As such we have closed off access to the woodland area in the park while they are still in residence."

Buzzards (turkey vultures) have settled into the small town of Bunn, North Carolina. Nothing tried so far has succeeded in making them leave for good. In the mean time, they're causing damage.
Buzzards settle in North Carolina town despite scare tactics

A North Carolina town finds itself under siege by buzzards, and nothing the locals do to scare them off seems to work.

The buzzards have chosen the town of Bunn as a meeting place for the past year, and they’re congregating at every available location, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported. On Wednesday, there were 28 buzzards perched on a cellular tower and another 21 at the high school across the street.

Ally Leggett said she counted 58 buzzards in her yard, on the roof, along the fence and atop the garage at one point. She said the unwelcome visitors would perch on her chimney and peck at the bricks, pulling them down. Other locals say the buzzards ate the roof vents off a restaurant ...

No one in Bunn seems to know why the scavengers have taken a shine to their town, but various attempts to evict them have failed.

In December, Bunn High School fired a propane cannon day and night. That it worked for a while, ... but the birds returned. The school also hung vulture effigies around its rooftop to deter the birds from gathering. That didn’t keep them away, either. ...

"Other locals say the buzzards ate the roof vents off a restaurant ... "

Roof vents couldn't be their standard diet (otherwise, they would be Fortean creatures indeed!)
What food do they find in the area?
Clear that away and they'd have to leave. Or eat each other . . .

Sheep in Madrid

The streets of Madrid were filled with sheep and the clanking of bells on Sunday as shepherds guided their flocks through the heart of the Spanish capital, following ancient seasonal herding routes.

The annual event, which started in 1994, allows shepherds to exercise their right to use traditional routes to herd their livestock from northern Spain to more southerly pastures for winter grazing.

The route would have taken them through quiet countryside a few centuries ago, but today sees them traverse the busy city.

A North Carolina squirrel single-handedly knocked out electrical power to 10,000 customers this past Saturday.
Just nuts: One squirrel caused a Lake Norman power outage for 10,000 customers

About 10,000 Energy United customers in the Lake Norman area lost power on Saturday morning, and officials quickly identified the perpetrator.

Crews with the power company reported finding a squirrel in the Northcross electrical substation in Huntersville that caused the outage, Energy United said on Twitter. The company didn’t say if the critter bit through a line or merely contacted a live wire. ...

Elephants Stomp Another Poacher

Anti-poaching rangers were patrolling Kruger National Park in South Africa looking for poachers. They found one, but elephants found him first.

Rangers found the mangled body of a suspected poacher. Fortunately, his phone somehow survived the pounding. It was turned over to police with the hopes of locating the poacher’s partners.

“Initial investigations suspect that the deceased was killed by an elephant and left behind by his accomplices,” Kruger National Park spokesman Isaac Phaahla stated.

Last April, rangers inadvertently chased three rhino poachers into a herd of breeding elephants. One was stomped to death, one was apprehended, and one escaped.

Yet another poacher was stomped in 2019. Most of his remains were eaten by lions.

Why did the salmon cross the road? ...
This occurs annually, when flooding of the Skokomish River in Washington (state) allows migrating salmon to swim upstream outside the bounds of the actual riverbed.

With recent heavy rainfalls Skokomish River flooding has confused migrating salmon to an even greater extent than usual. If you can access this news site and its video you can see law enforcement personnel standing in a downpour and chasing salmon back across the road toward their intended river.
Caution: Salmon crossing! Skokomish River flood brings salmon to the streets

Those weren't your typical pedestrians crossing the streets of Mason County during an atmospheric river Thursday afternoon.

It was salmon!

The Skokomish River is home to an annual salmon migration, but it's also the most flood-prone river in Western Washington. And when you put the two together, the salmon get an unexpected detour and drivers get an unexpected sight.

"There's a road nearby (the river)," says hydrologist Brent Bower with the National Weather Service in Seattle. "So basically what's happened is (the salmon) are trying to go up the river. But when the river floods, they don't necessarily know what's the actual river channel, and what's not, so they just follow the water. And sometimes that water takes them across the road." ...

Police pick up possum.

A woman in New Zealand called the police with an emergency: a possum was holding her "hostage."

Every time she stepped outside her house, trying to reach her car, the possum charged after her and ran up her leg. "I pulled it off me, thinking it was a cat, and then I saw it was a possum," she said, according to UPI. She ran back inside, feeling trapped in her own home.

After her emergency call, an officer kindly stopped by to help. But the officer didn't get too far from his car before the excited possum spotted the officer's leg and climbed right up.

From The Guardian:

When the police arrived and approached the front door, a juvenile possum came out of the dark and climbed an officer's leg. Dinnissen suspected it was either an escaped pet or had recently been separated from its mother.
After apprehending the suspect, police delivered the possum up to nearby lookout spot Signal Hill and released it into the wild "to prevent further citizen harassment". No harm came to the possum or the officer, Dinnessen said.

If you think lockdowns caused by a virus are daunting, you might faint at the notion of lockdown conditions caused by millions of crabs.

Millions of crabs shut down the streets on Australia's Christmas Island

Each year Australia's northwestern Christmas Island is flooded with millions of red crabs migrating to the ocean.

Highways and roads are shut down, storefronts find red crabs in their lots and residents find them in their yards. But the island doesn't see it as an inconvenience. Instead, they use rakes to clear the roads and officials close major highways.

Residents typically go out of their way for the red crabs. One community built a bridge to help the crawling crustaceans climb over a congested road.

The red crab is only found on Christmas Island with a population of about 50 million, according to National Geographic. ...

Parks Australia often refers to the time of year as "Crab lockdown," as some residents are stuck inside their homes during the crabs invasion.

Bald eagle steals shark from angler's line on Florida beach

A Utah woman visiting a Florida beach captured video of the moment a bald eagle swooped out of the sky and stole a shark from the end of her husband's fishing line. ...

Was looking online for the story on the Brazilian donkey that tore out its owner's throat as reported in the latest FT Strange Deaths column, but was informed "Some results may be explicit" which is bizarre enough on its own.
