Anyone Seen A Ghost?

Reminded me of the house we used to drive past in the 80son the Witheridge to South Molton road in North Devon with a fake thatched roof that was bright yellow and just blatantly not real
Which just reinforces my opinion that 80% of North Devon is built of Lego.

Nothing much to report except that my partner’s dad still swears blind he saw something but isn’t that bothered because he‘s a sceptic, yes one of those sceptics that wouldn’t believe anything he saw :hahazebs:
The house definitely feels old and ’alive’ though. The upstairs corridor’s not very friendly. There’s a little sofa up there to sit and read and I did, but not really comfortable. (Not the sofa, the landing). But anyway, I was exploring round the back, some of which is gated off unless the whole property is booked and I could see out onto the field and ‘What’s that?’ Not a tumulus (I thought) as it looks too big, at least the ones I’ve seen in Wilts and Berks tend to be much more sunk into the ground. I went onto OS maps online and it’s a motte and bailey! So there have been buildings here a long time.

'The upstair corridor's not very friendly' - strange how certain parts in certain buildings can feel like this - most of the place can feel fine, you turn corner - and suddenly - 'nah, I don't like this at all'. And it's so hard to pin down exactly why a certain place feels oppressive, or unfriendly or 'too remote' somehow.

Yes, very true! I can’t say anywhere else in the house felt ‘off’ apart from those back stairs and little landing, although it all felt ‘busy’, old, a bit liminal but also ‘right’ for the place. I would have been disturbed feeling it at home, but there it felt quite normal.

A friend of mine looked at the picture of the stairs and said ‘99 times out of 100, the stairs just lead up. The 100th time…that’s different.’

Well i might have seen a ghost. My next door but one neighbour died suddenly. We weren’t close but we met occasionally and we got on ok so it was sad but not traumatic. A week or so later i was walking along our town high st and i spotted her walking the other way, and thought ‘oh there’s Beryl’ but as she was just passing me (although about 6 feet away) i didn’t say hello as she would have passed me by the time i could have said something. No frisson of unreality etc. It was only about half an hour later that i remembered it couldn’t have been her as she was dead. Of course i could have mistaken a complete stranger for her, but it did look like her. As far as i know she had a nephew, but no living sister . I mentioned this to another neighbour and she didn’t seem at all surprised at the sighting.

Do their ghosts look like this?

This seems curious! Do you have any idea why? Of course I want to believe that she also has experienced "sightings."
I thought at the time she seemed very matter of fact about it. When i said i thought i had seen Beryl in town after she died she said something like ‘of course you would’. I didn’t question her about it as I really wasn’t sure what to say.

I used to work in a country house.
I once heard posh sounding voices from one of the bedrooms and burst in expecting to find visitors who'd went off piste.

No one there.

probably sound carrying from somewhere else.

I came across a story in a paper about the Bell Hotel in Thetford: the manager was in a bathroom when he heard voices. Although a sceptic of ghosts, he was a bit perturbed and then realised that he recognised the voices. They were two of his waiting staff who were some distance away in another part of the hotel.
It turns out that the voices were somehow being transmitted through the pipework.

I was in the White Hart in Witham last night.
I had eaten in the local Tapas bar with my wife and a friend and I knew my youngest son was a few doors away with his buddies so we went to have a nightcap or three.
Responding to a call of nature I walked towards the short narrow corridor leading to the gents and was aware of someone coming in the opposite direction. I stepped to the side to let them pass and after a few seconds no one exited the corridor.
I thought maybe I was mistaken and someone was walking into the loo instead of coming out, so I walked into the toilet…to find it empty. No one at the urinal and both traps wide open. No one could have left the loo without passing me.
I thought someone may purposely be hiding so checked out both traps, behind the doors etc but no, nobody present.
On my return I told the people I was with who laughed at me and I got the usual comments about having had one too many, but my son brought over one of the staff who said they all believed the pub has some spooky stuff going on at times. She said she would bring the manager over so I could relay to him what I thought I had seen/felt/been aware of, but he never came over whilst we were still there.

I don’t know what made me believe someone was walking towards me. A trick of the light or a shadow cast from behind me but for me to physically step to one side to let them pass show that something triggered the response in me.

A fascinating account, thanks.

My first thought: ls there some combination of floorplan, layout and lighting that might lead someone - whose mind was otherwise occupied - to believe that there was another patron approaching? A shadow cast by an oddly-placed light, for example?

It is quite dimly lit and the corridor is about 3-4 metres in length.
The corridor is formed by a plasterboard or timber wall/running off of an original brick column. I believe it has been put there as a sort of vanity screen to prevent sight of the open toilet.

In my very old house, you could hear the television more clearly sitting on the upstairs toilet than you could when you were in the same room with it. It stood in front of the cupboard which contained the hot water pipes, and the upstairs bathroom was directly above. Those pipes carried the sound better than the actual air in the room (which was quite large so sitting in front of the TV meant sitting maybe three yards away).

These sort of experience's are either real or just have a perfect explanation but there are times we might see ghosts or other slips in time but don't realise or like what happened to you last night and they happen more then the more detailed encounters.
6 weeks ago I'm sure I saw and outline of someone walking passed my kitchen window but it could of been my imagination...but we never find....or do we ;)

that sounds like the experience of a former manager at the Bell Hotel in Thetford, which I've mentioned in another thread.

I visited my friend John the other day. He was telling me about how he woke up in his cottage (built recently but from the ruins of a fifteenth century barn) to hear a dog barking. It sounded, apparently, as though the dog was actually in the room with him. He does not have a dog although there are several on the farm, and he checked but all dogs were accounted for, and none in his cottage.

But then, whilst I was there I could hear footsteps moving about upstairs. John seemed to think this was mysterious and a sign of a haunting, until I pointed out that it was probably just the people next door walking around in their own house. So I'm not sure he's a totally credible witness.

It's easy to find out whether the footsteps are from next door if you don't mind doing a spot of stalking/counting! :wink2:

I went to a few development circle meetings at our local Spiritualist Church some years ago, escorting someone who didn't want to go alone.
There are a library and study area upstairs from where we heard footsteps clumping about on the bare floor. Irritating when folks were trying to concentrate.

But there was nobody up there, and the neighbours were two houses away, and the floor is carpeted. o_O
I was absolutely entranced. :)

For a couple of years I lived in a place where I would hear what sounded like furniture being shoved around on bare floors above me.
The floor up there was carpeted.

Not long before I left, I got a view of the floor below me, which was a cellar with cement floors.
Lots of furniture had been shoved into the middle.

I hope that is not the explanation in your case, Escargot!

Yes, the cottages are all joined together and, I suspect, long runs of boards have been used to floor them, across more than one cottage. The two girls who live next door to John were home, with their toddler, I could hear them which was why I suggested that it was simply people next door walking about.

His hearing is good, but, rather like mine, I think he may be losing the ability to locate where sounds are coming from. He was telling me all about the 'mysterious noises' he'd been hearing in his kitchen, that sounded like things being moved around.

I just said, 'you've got mice', and such was proved to be the case.

Over forty years ago, when I was 5 or 6 years old, I went through a short period when I kept seeing a man in my bedroom “with a light on his head”, as I used to say to my parents. This happened on a few occasions over a couple of months, but then stopped and was never repeated. I remember seeing this man in the middle of the night, always a distinct outline of a man, no facial features, and a light on top of his head. The house was a modern end-of-terrace house in a Cornish village. Years later, I realised that the area was dotted with mine workngs (indeed, the neighbourhood was called ‘Wheal Rose’), though I’m not sure I would have appreciated this at the time of seeng ‘the man’. To the best of my knowledge, no one else ever claimed to have seen anything in the house or surroundings.

Certainly sounds like a miner's ghost. But were you aware that miners had been living in your local area for some time in the past, or are you postulating? If it was a modern house, were there miner's houses there before? Might be interesting to look up history of disasters there too, if you're feeling morbid!

I can’t say for certain owing to the passage of time and how young I was at the time, but I don’t think I had realised at the time that miners and mines were associated with the village. It was a fishing village and I don’t think I’d been aware of a mining connection until a few years later (in rather dramatic fashion, when a mine shaft opened up overnight in our local playground area!). I’ve done some research on the area and while it doesnt seem as though any major disasters happened in any of the local mines, deaths would have been relatively common.

Yeah, I guess so, miner mortality rates would have been a problem. What's interesting is that you associated your home with fishing, not mining, as a, er, minor, so if you were "hallucinating" (for want of a better word) you'd more likely see a fisherman!
