UFOs: Seen One? Personal UFO Sightings (IHTM; Miscellaneous)

Revel, Malteser, or Creme Egg sizes held at elbow length would also be acceptable.

I know exactly where this is as I do drive past it virtually daily. It's known as Carden. If the lights you saw were as high as you said, there's no way they could be on a vehicle. The trees immediately to the east of the white van you can see in the satellite shot are far higher than any vehicle I have ever seen on the A96, and believe me I have seen the biggest when doing abnormal load escorts. Furthermore, due to the embankment at the south side of the A96 and various bushes, shrubs etc, the lower lights even on HGV's are not normally visible, so your lights must have been a good deal higher already.

The chances of it being a helicopter are virtually nil for several reasons (in my humble opinion) First, as I said before, there's the proximity to trees which are substantial. Secondly, there are high tension power lines just to the north, and they too are substantial in height. Although to be fair the land is dropping away so the tops of the pylons may be lower than the trees. I can't recall exactly. Thirdly, you will see there are houses at the east and west ends of the picnic/parking area. I know for absolute fact that one of the residents would undoubtedly complain to all and sundry if a helicopter were that low and presumably hovering near their home. (They complained about traffic cars sitting with engine on, so a helicopter would surely draw some comment. No it wasn't me, honest Guv)

While John and I have had our disagreement, his queries are very valid as they would potentially eliminate some possibilities. (Hell I may even take a photo if I get the chance just to show I am not his enemy ) It may help though to jog your memory. I'll see what I can do. God I am slow. Just saw your name is a palindrome. Nothing to do with the post, just commenting. Incidentally liver is not evil. I love it with mash and onion gravy.

Secondly, there are high tension power lines just to the north, and they too are substantial in height. Although to be fair the land is dropping away so the tops of the pylons may be lower than the trees.

Another pylon related sighting? Are these big old pylons, like the sort of size that might be useful for someone who needs a lot of power?

very good point. Yes they are old. Only about quarter mile, maybe less from the parking area.

As for the original story, could there have been a late night tree surgeon (sounds like a euphemism) with a couple of torches at work there? Or someone else from the council working at a quiet time so as not to be disturbed?

Our council........work. The two just don't go together. Forget that. Joking aside, all maintenance for the A96 is done by Bear Scotland Ltd. However, I am not sure who would do the picnic area. They seem to work on the basis that everything has to be done in daylight, and preferably during peak traffic times on bank holidays. However again being serious they are fastidious about safety and seem to have cornered the market in sodium floodlights when they are working.

If it was the trees being worked on then this would be the council so again I suspect there would be a lot of worklights and people in fluorescent jackets. I can't recall them ever doing a job without several people looking on and leaning on brooms/shovels/chainsaws. Only a couple of weeks ago they had to fell a very large tree in town due to a branch beginning to crack over a busy street. They started working late evening and the place was lit up like Christmas on steroids while they were working. Mind you once it was down, they left near 5 foot diameter chunks of tree trunk stacked up haphazardly on the ground opposite a primary school. Never mind, they did put up a sign saying keep off, and put some plastic barriers around it. That'll always keep kids away.

Sorry. I digress. Although a long shot, rumours abound up here that secret aircraft have used both RAF bases in the past. There were instances for example of Stealth fighters in the area when they were still not that well known. Likewise I recall a story some time ago that the alleged Aurora plane had landed at Mackrihanish on the west coast. That would be a mere hop and skip from here at even sub sonic speeds. With both Lossiemouth's and Kinloss's runways having approaches either over the sea or over a virtually uninhabited and very substantial forest respectively, then is it outwith the realms of possibility that something new has been tested in the area? I'd like to keep an open mind.

I don't know how deeply you've looked into other phenomena so at the risk of being patronising, are you aware of the earthlights/tectonic strain theory?
If I remember this correctly, Scotland has the right mix of granite quartz rocks which, when there is tectonic strain, rub together and produce balls of energy. It's an interesting theory and could explain a lot of sightings of small balls of light behaving erratically before disappearing.

Or indeed the Psychosocial Hypothesis? ;)

That's good....but remember the beginning of the year and wind turbine and the Sky Octopus with dangly tentacles?

http://www.louthleader.co.uk/news/UPDAT ... 4847433.jp

That's before we even go to Magonia. And turning left before we reach the corner of 'Elemental Things that don't know what to be until imprinted by the viewer'.

It's all interesting stuff.

Ha .... I'd not seen that about the wind turbine ..... that would have to be some pretty hardcore Chinese lantern for sure, but all in a day's work for an ultraterrestrial :D

Time Travel. It's amazing to think what the Argos store will be doing in 2030.
Even if you think Unidimensionally. (Have I just made a word up there?)

I understand where you are going with this theory of earth lights, but like peas in a pode and not moving erratically, all still a slight movment by all to the right then gone in the blink of a eye, they where around 40 feet up and around 60 feet from them, what they could hear was a sound like falling leaves, and the Mphones would not work.

No response from Liverevil. I hope our questions/comments haven't put him off.

I'm posting this up in the hope that somebody else might remember this, because I've come up with very little from basic searches Online. It also remains my only personal experience linked with a UFO.

Back in 1996 I was still at Sixth Form College, in Kenilworth, WARKS, doing my A-Levels. But in the evenings, as I often have been during my life, I was involved with amateur theatre and operatic groups. There's a huge network of them in Warwickshire. Seriously.

At the time I was working with Leamington Spa Opera, playing Fyedka in their production of Fiddler on the Roof, which I can trace back to October 1996. The show itself was performed a Leamington Spa Centre, in Leamington Spa. But until a few weeks before the show itself, we couldn't actually get into the venue itself for rehearsals (It a professional space, other shows were on) and so all other rehearsals we done between two Church halls. One in Whitnash (For blocking and performance rehearsals) and one in Warwick (For Orchestral and Operatic rehearsals).

Why is that important? Well, on the night me and my father saw this thing he was collecting me from the Spa Centre. And as we weren't able to rehearse in that space until late September this dates that night between October and September.

When my father came to collect me that night, and drive me back home to Kenilworth, he said to me along the lines of

'Now I hope you don't mind, but driving over here I saw something funny in the sky'.

'What do you mean?' I asked

'I'm not sure. It's not the traffic copter, I'm sure of that. It can't be, it's moving very oddly if it is. I spotted it as I was driving in from Kenilworth, and then again when I was driving down the Parade (Main Street of Leamington) and it's not hovering exactly, just moving very slowly'.

This would have been some time between Ten or Eleven at night (That's when rehearsals tended to end). He drove us around the corner, and down towards the bottom of The Parade, where the sky opens out a bit from the buildings, for large Park Land, which houses the annual Peace Festivals and Food Festivals at the right times of year. Nothing in the autumn though...

Sure enough, there was something. Not sure how best to describe it, but I guess you'd either say a pure cylinder shape or a bit like a slim bullet. Even in 1996 we were used to the Mobile Traffic Chopper. It was seen A LOT. But this definitely wasn't the same shape or lighting configuration.

It seemed to have a single light source at its left hand side, with light flowing off to the right, at the slimmer end or distant end of the cylinder. And the light was constant - Not blinking like the traffic copter usually does.

I also agree with my father that it was moving oddly. At the distance in the sky it was definitely hanging over Warwick somewhere, the next town along. But it was moving off slowly, at a constant height and speed, in the direction of maybe Stratford Upon Avon or some of the smaller Warwickshire towns and villages out that way. And unlike say a helicopter it was moving off in a direction with this single light source at the back of the aircraft.

We followed it a distance, around some of the backroads of Leamington and Warwick, keeping it in sight as often as we could. But eventually decided to Head home to Kenilworth, as it still seemed visible at a distance, and did still appear to be in the direction it was travelling.

When we did got home, we told my Mother and younger Brother what we'd seen. Mum suggested, given the direction it was travelling, that we got the binoculars out and went up to the highest room in the house, which faced in the correct direction - my own. A fairly clear view from there across to the far end of Kenilworth Town centre, where the road branches out towards roads for Balsall Common, Solihull and Birmingham.

(I'm no longer living in this house, so I'm sorry, but I can't say exactly what compass direction we were facing. I can only go by knowledge of local geography)

Sure enough, after a few minutes we did spot it. Again cylindrical in shape, single light source at the left hand (We assume rear) of the craft, flowing off towards the slimmer end. At first we thought it might be travelling off to towards Birmingham, but it became clear that it was actually just getting further and further away from us, rather than heading towards the far end of Kenilworth.

It was just getting smaller and smaller to see in the left hand side of my back window, which suggested it was actually heading towards Banbury or Stratford-upon-Avon, as it had certainly seemed while were still following it in Leamington and Warwick.

After an hour or so, given that it was now well after midnight I was instructed to go to bed. The craft, whatever it was, was now getting very difficult to spot even through binoculars. So I turned in.

I did mention it to a few folks when I got into college the following day. They thought I was nuts, but then again whatever we saw was definitely most easy to spot in Leamington, not Kenilworth. I was somewhat vindicated later, however, by at least one of the local Newspapers - which printed a story about the self-same incident. They noted that the police had received calls about this object in the sky, and at least one other person who they'd spoken to referred to this thing as being cylinder shaped. It was only local press in the Kenilworth/Leamington Spa/Warwick area. But it was something!

But here's my problem...

I've tried multiple times to find somebody who remembers this incident. Or the fact that it did get press coverage. I'm drawing a blank. It doesn't help that back in 1996, certainly in the Warwickshire area, we were all a little 'pre-internet'. Heck even my Sixth Form Centre only had one machine connected to the net. It was in the library. On dial-up. And only the Teachers could use it...

The local papers such as the Observer and Kenilworth Weekly news weren't storing articles online.

Anybody out there in Warwickshire / West Midlands area recall this?

Many moons ago I was walking my dogs along the Cheshire Lines, near Maghull, a disused railway track run at the time by Sustrans. We lived below, or close to,one of the flight paths to Speke Airport so very used to seeing plane lights etc in the night sky. Alongside the track runs a line of pylons. I happened to glance up at the sky and saw some red lights which I took to be plane lights . I noted they appeared to be very close to one another. I thought, "if they aren't careful they will crash into each other". So I watched for maybe 5 to 10 mins whilst keeping an eye on the dogs. The lights appeared to come very close then start weaving around each other, I thought they were around the top of one of the pylons although a bit too far away in the dark to be 100% sure. After a while (a few minutes) one peeled off, turned pink then a. I looked away for a couple of seconds when I looked back another had completely gone, I watched the last one go again turned pink then out like a light. No idea what they were, no idea why they were doing whatever it was. Just an odd event. Never seen anything like it since.

I don't think UFOs are ET but investigating them is fascinating. I've seen 3 in my life.

1. Mid eighties, myself and some other kids watch what I can only describe as a pink egg zig zag around in the sky. It looked to have some kind of tail. Multiple witnesses and my dad coming into the garden and shouting on my mum to come and see it. It vanished just as she came to the back door, literally just wasn't there anymore. My dad thought it was some kind of electric disturbance in the atmosphere and I've always agreed with him.

2. 1999, a few amateur astronomers and I watch two parallel balls of light slowly arc across the sky. Observation through binocolurs just showed two balls of light. Very strange - seasoned skywatchers and aircraft enthusiasts stumped. Can't really come up with anything for this one.

3. Late night, 2015, sitting out back on a clear Summers eve. Slowly become aware of a small red bar of light slowly moving to the west. It seemed to stop dead then reverse before fading out. I suspect this was one of those bloody Chinese lanterns and the bar appearance was some kind of optical illusion.

Pretty dull - but dullness?

That's me speciality

Not dull at all! I would have liked to have seen the pink egg. Was this at night or in the day?

Yep those damn chinese lanterns have got a lot to answer for in more ways than one!

Just two very strange things.. One, maybe 6 or 7 years ago. I live to the North of the town centre at Bury and looking out of the lounge window one morning I saw and heard a very odd something that was heading towards me. It was like a large round balloon with a kind of tail and was making a noise like a rather noisy lawn mower. I was thinking that it must be some kind of machine put together by students at the local college, but the odd thing was that I could see no sign of a propeller. At the same time the thought was occurring to me that I shouldn't take any notice of it, it really doesn't matter.

Maybe 2 or 3 years back I was in the garden and heard a small light aircraft (not uncommon, as although this is a military flight zone they do allow private pilots to use a small local airfield). It passed over heading northward and as I looked up I saw something very odd much higher up. It seemed to be a small group of maybe 4 balloons strung together, but suddenly it seemed to change into one single object, and then it morphed back into several. All the time it was moving quite rapidly, too quickly to be carried in the wind maybe, and in any case there was little wind that day. The only answer I could think of was a deflated weather balloon, but how would that change into several distinct segments?

Sounds to me like Pennywise holidays in Bury! Who knew?

Do you think the object was projecting this thought to you in a way to obfuscate itself from you?
It's possible. On the other hand it might have been our cultural bias trying to protect itself. I had a feeling that I was almost being shown something rather than just happening to see it, if that makes any sense.

Thanks for posting these intriguing glimpses of 'something'. What sort of size was this first object...?

Maybe the size of a small car? One thing that surprised me was that there were apparently no reports of this very noisy device by other witnesses.

Sorry, forgot to ask about colour...?
I think the balloon-like part was a kind of dull red colour, can't remember what the tail section was like, could have been struts. The odd thing was that although it sounded as if it should have had a big propellor there was no sign of one. Aerodynamically it didn't make sense, now I think about it!

Forgot to say, that when out walking the dog a few days later, I thought I heard the same whirring noise again. I looked around but couldn't see anything -- probably someone mowing their lawn.

Hey.... Colour me impressed. I have always wanted to see one of the buggers but up til now they have eluded me. But you live in hope. Even in Staffordshire. Did hear a very weird humming noise at night in a field being some trees when I lived on a farm but I was way too spooked to investigate. So much for MY paranormal credentials.... Scooby snack, anyone??!!
