Wild Winds: Twisters, Tornados, Dust Devils, Whirlwinds & Waterspouts

This is what it looks like when a tornado is forming its funnel directly over you ... A Florida teen and meteorology fan happened to be in the right time and place to capture this video.

Pasco storm chaser gets rare view of tornado’s swirling ‘mouth’

A young storm chaser captured the rare moment a tornado formed over his family’s home in New Port Richey on Tuesday.

Nicholas Krasznavolgyi was watching the storm develop on the radar before he took a look out of his window and spotted a massive spiral-shaped cloud above him. ...

The young weather photographer rushed outside with a camera and tripod to film unusual sights. As he began to record, the mouth of the tornado passed directly over his house. ...

Another Durham Dust Devil.

Dust devil: Footage shows the whirlwind blowing in County Durham

A dust devil has been spotted in a field following a wildfire in County Durham.

The whirlwind was spinning through a rural area in northeast England and filmed by the County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue on Thursday.

Dust devils usually happen when it is very warm, so it is not common to encounter the weather phenomenon in the UK.

Another one.

Dust devil: Footage shows whirlwind blowing in Worcestershire

A dust devil has been filmed lifting crops into the air in Worcestershire.

The unusual phenomenon was spotted at Lower Broadheath by Mandy Parkes.

"We thought it was absolutely brilliant," she said.

Dust devils are caused when hot air near the land rises rapidly through cooler air above.

Rare 'snow tornado' spotted by Shetland crofter

Have you ever seen a "snow tornado"?

Michael Peterson was feeding his sheep on his croft in Shetland when he spotted the rare weather event following a hailstorm on Tuesday.
He told BBC Radio Shetland he was lucky to be in the "right place at the right time".

An Arctic blast continues to hit many parts of Scotland, with school closures in Shetland, Aberdeenshire and Highland.

Some good footage of a dust devil here.

Amazing how focused and localised it is.
I used to see quite a number of smaller dust-devils when I lived in Perthshire (Scotland), when conditions were dusty and dry usually towards late Summer, you'd see them lifting up the sandy dust like miniature tornados. I would imagine that a lot of that dry dust got wind-born and dumped onto roads at the times when field cropping (harvesting) was being undertaken.

My wife and l saw a tiny one while hiking across Rannoch Moor on the West Highland Way in the late Nineties. We’d been talking about the Highland Clearances, and the locus and timing were quite eerie and evocative.

This reminds me of one of my trekking journey's. Must have been around mid 1970's, along the West Highland Way, setting out from Glasgow, then on up to Fort William, then picking up my own route following Bonnie Prince Charlie's way across mountain tracks to finally ending up in Mallaig - a stunning and highly memorable journey, staying overnight in a little walkers bothy on the mountain.

Then, in the morning walking through a particularly high-walled canyon, which had many very large Ravens and the odd Eagle which flew overhead, passing by areas where starched-white bones were strewn upon the ground, of which I observed in number along the way.

Another memorable trip I had - this time on my motorbike (with tent) along the north-east coast of Scotland. Stopped over in Helmsdale to have a hearty meal, and have a break - then I journeyed on ~ following alongside the Helmsdale burn to the not-so-well-known Gold Rush Camp of 1869, known as 'Baile an Or,' where I did self-teach how to pan for gold for a week, using just an enamelled plate. I did find a few specks of gold, and (unknowingly) threw away many decent sized Red Garnets!

Went for a stroll one evening up the mountainside, and found the old remains of the old gold camps. On the way back had to pass through adders sun-bathing themselves in the heather clad ditches along the track back down the hill.

Didn't sleep to well during that last night there, as a silhouette of a mouse, or some other type of rodent started climbing up the outside of my tent, and, eventually some time during the night when I was 'out-for-the-count,' had chewed it's way in, and nicked my last bag of crisps by entering through the corner of my tent right next to the foot-end of my sleeping bag!

"Great memories though!"

Two threads on 'wild winds' have been merged.

There are now some good anecdotes from 2004 back on the first page of the thread.

CCTV pictures captured the moment sudden, strong winds from a funnel cloud tore through a storage company's yard.

Mattresses and other heavy objects were tossed into the air, damaging a car and narrowly missing staff at Filing Fortress in Horham in Suffolk just after 12:30 BST on Thursday.

Florida: Child rescued from 'dust devil' in baseball game

A 17-year-old umpire came to the rescue of a young player during a little league game on Sunday.

A "dust devil", a type of whirlwind, wrapped up the seven-year-old in Jacksonville, Florida before umpire Aidan Wiles pulled him out.

Interesting but they made it sound like he was going to be carried away. He was just a little sandblasted.

There's a hand pallet truck going for a walk there as well as furniture. Heavy thing to be blowing around.

Watch: 'Haynado' in field captured by farm worker

A farm worker has captured the moment a "haynado" formed in a field.

Lee Kimpton, 45, said the unusual incident lasted between three and four minutes, as pieces of hay were tossed about 150ft (45.7m) into the air above a field in Leicestershire on Wednesday.

"I just nicknamed it as a haynado. It's quite a spectacle when you actually see one for yourself, literally in front of you," he said.

A spokesman for the Met Office said the footage appeared to show a "swirling column of air, which is relatively common in the UK", rather than a tornado.

Huge water spout spotted over sea off the Isle of Wight

A huge water spout has been spotted over the Isle of Wight.

Amazed onlookers have been posting pictures and video when it appeared over the sea near Bembridge.

The Met Office has confirmed it is a water spout, which is described as a tornado occurring over a lake or sea.

Shot this in 2010ish in outback SA on a hot spring morning. Res is poor as it was recorded on an old digicam. But the zoom works to see the height of the thing. It was a low breeze where I was in the car but obviously a vortex got itself going the 400m or whatever it was away from my poz.

Tornado tears through town in County Down.

A clean-up operation is under way following reports of a tornado in the Leestone Road area of Kilkeel, County Down.

It occurred during a period of very wet and windy weather on Sunday evening. Several properties were damaged and a static caravan was toppled along the coastal road.

Kilkeel resident Charlie O'Hare said he and his daughter had been feeding calves when they "noticed the bad weather coming in off the sea".

"All of the animals were running for shelter as we could see a tornado heading towards the house," he told BBC News NI.
