Expressing Measurements Via Analogies & Comparisons

My special braces are useful not only for holding up my trousers but also double up as an inaccurate, imprecise, measuring tool, if I don't mind my trousers falling down while I use them (again).

And the irony of my statement is that I have no idea of an ocean span:cool:
I'm thinking it would be a little over three miles, as to actually 'looking' to the horizons in any direction at, or on, the 'span' of an ocean?

The five oceans are connected and are actually one huge body of water, called the global ocean or just the ocean.
The five oceans from smallest to largest are: the Arctic, Southern, Indian, Atlantic and Pacific.

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world's five major oceans. It spans an area of approximately 14,060,000 km² and is known as one of the coldest of oceans.

Which is about 85 times the size of Florida.

Then in reality, there is but one ocean. It's just that humans have seen the need to divide it up, so that they know where they are, or where they are going in the world!

Meh....oceans and seas don't name themselves.

Roaring Forties comes to mind, that's given itself a descriptive name I guess?
Not really - IIRC it gained it's moniker from it's Southern Latitudes when sailors were first regularly going through there.

Asteroid the size of 45 aardvarks to fly past Earth

An asteroid the size of over 45 aardvarks is set to pass by the Earth on Wednesday, July 19, according to NASA's asteroid tracker.

The asteroid in question was designated by NASA as 2023 NE1, according to the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

Only difference then is that 45 Aardvark's have long thick tails!

The aardvark weighs up to 65 kg (145 pounds) and measures up to 2.2 metres (7.2 feet) long, including the heavy, 70-cm (28-inch) tail. The face is narrow with an elongated snout, very reduced eyes, and ears up to 24 cm (9.5 inches) long.

So an Aardvarks tail is about as long as 18 table tennis balls.

I'm beginning to think we need a subforum just for these deliberately oddball Jerusalem Post asteroid stories. They take all the fun out of searching for other items that meet the thread's title.

Are they just doing this to be silly, or is there something more to it? Could it be some kind of spy code? One of the readers of this story knows what "45 aardvarks" really means.

I think we should be more concerned for aardvarks than asteroids the size of 45 of them.

I don't know what 45 is, but I do know what 42 is :nods:

Well at least I can fathom that.

I realise it's not one of the more bizarre analogies, but thought it worth posting because your traditional bus is usually employed to visualise horizontal distance, rather than vertical. We've all seen double-deckers queued up in a line, but it's a bit trickier to imagine them stacked up on top of each other like huge red Lego bricks!

Saw a sign outside a pub today advertising roast dinners "with lashings of proper gravy".

Is it permissible to use the lashing as a unit for measuring the volume of liquids other than ginger beer?
