    I've seen circles occur on similar areas of urban 'waste ground'. They were caused by the tethering of gypsey/traveller horses. The horse tramples the ground and eats the grass in a circle. The size of the circle depends on the length of rope it's tied to! Here's an example:- Horse Circles!
