Great article about Wotjek the Bear, who served with the Polish Army in World War 2 .
" A bear, famed for his love of beer, cigarettes and boxing and who was by the side of Allied troops in World War Two, has been made the subject of a play.
Wojtek was adopted by the 2nd Polish Corps in 1943...

The Time 122 Mule Deer Fell to Their Deaths in the Sierra Nevada
A little more than five years ago, a herd of 122 mule deer fell to their deaths in the mountains of Central California. The pictures from that day are gruesome: dozens of dead deer strewn across a steep boulder field at the bottom...
Has anyone else seen a ghost of their pet or had spooky experiences after the death of an animal?
I have had a couple of experiences like this.
The first was after my Dad had taken one of my dogs to be put to sleep. I was about 20 and I was laying on the grass in our back garden. I was looking...
I was in a taxi tonight coming through East London on my way home from work. It was 23:50. I noticed out of my corner of my eye a large flock of birds which looked like seagulls swooping around. I cricked my neck and reckon there were scores of them
I spent he first 24 years of my life on the...

I was going to add this to the Bees thread, but thought better of it. It's along similar lines, though: where are the wasps? I haven't seen any this year and we usually get quite a few, so what happened to them?
Granted, they are the scariest animal in Britain and I don't really miss them...
This has to be one of the most bizarre UL/superstitions I've heard, it was told to me by my 78 year old neighbour this afternoon, who heard it from a friend at his social club.
He claimed that spiders are allergic to conkers, and if you place conkers or chestnuts around the house, you won't...
yes another spider thread :D
ive been thinking about this for some time:-
why spiders build webs around or near outdoor electric lights sources
have they (spiders) learned to associate lights with food?
and when did this behaviour begin?
People always refer to it as being some kind of strange phenomena but was it that widespread and has it really gone?
I do remember there being quite a lot of it being around in the eigthies but why would it disappear?
Some thoughts:
1. Some change in dog food? Unlikely.
2. Pavement...

yesterday night i went to see a film. walking, on the way back, the ground was damp, but there weren't many snails. and then i came to a pavement which was literally covered in snails... a section of it *bad at estimating* some 2 and a half metres long with snails no further than 6 inches apart...
... which would be a fortean subject by itself :)
Does anyone remember the name of the book about dodo-like birds found alive and well on a small South Pacific island? I think it was written by the man who set up Jersey zoo (whose name escapes me now...).
Stop me if I begin to make sense...
There's a fascinating programme on Radio 4 at the moment, dealing with the fringes of medicine.
This week it concerns animals. So far we've had dogs being able to smell cancer in growths (even picking the most dangerous one from a number of melanomas on one person) and dogs being able to detect...
