A device that can detect when a man is watching pornography by “reading his mind” has been developed in China, according to the research team in Beijing behind the project.

The device, which could speed up the work of censors trying to spot indecent images on the Chinese internet, is worn on the head by the subject and can pick up a spike in the brainwaves triggered by explicit content, according to the researchers.

The prototype device was made “for bad information detection”, said Xu Jianjun, director of the electrical engineering experiment centre at Beijing Jiaotong University.

It was tested on 15 male university students who would wear the device while sat in front of a computer screen – with an alarm going off when explicit imagery was detected by the brain.

The developers say the new device can automatically adapt to the brainwaves of a human censor, able to filter out other signals that would come from emotions or weariness.

Chinese authorities employ professional censors called jian huang shi - porn appraisers – to check social media for what they deem inappropriate content.

Usually artificial intelligence can be used to detect explicit pictures and videos, but sometimes the algorithm makes errors. Human brains can still detect pornographic content more quickly and with greater accuracy.

Many of these appraisers are women, but since the test was only ran on men researchers believe there could be differences between genders. The accuracy of the machine is reportedly 80 per cent.

No matter what barriers are put before them, people will always find a way to watch porn.

If the jian huang shi are doing their job, can't they just use their own judgement to say whether something is porn? As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said, "I know it when I see it". Seems to me the only purpose of this device is to keep an eye on the employees.

Of course if you tell people that you have device that can read their minds and tell you when they are watching porn, with a suitable demonstration. It becomes a very useful device for stopping people from watching porn, whether it works or not.

Hapless Minion: 'We were just having sex! It's not like that's illegal, is it?'
Authorities: 'It says here, you were looking at hard-core porn!'

Hmmm - this story seems like utter bollox. It’s supposedly aimed at deciding whether a video is pornographic & someone has to wear the device on their head whilst watching yet are not able to decide for themselves whether it is indeed pornographic but rely on the software to analyse their brainwaves to make the decision instead.

Doesn’t sound credible to me as a process.

It detects brainwaves to decide whether you're watching porn? When I'm in the mood, watching the morning weather lady would make the thing explode.

Also, the alarm goes off "when explicit imagery was detected by the brain" - what? How does the machine clarify what a person's opinion of what is explicit? And it can differentiate between other signals such as emotional responses or tiredness? I would suppose that peoples' brain responses to different levels of explicitness in photos would all be different as what one person considers explicit is not the same as another's. And how does a person's brain not react emotionally to what may be viewed as explicit and/or disturbing?

I too have a difficult time believing this article as it is.

The fact that someone has to voluntarily wear the device while serfing the net makes this story implausible. How are they going to force peopel to wear the device?

Wow ! That is so wonderfully pointless !

Why bother tracking elusive "brain waves" when one can simply scan a man's lower parts and detect "anomalous movements" ? As we say in French, "pourquoi faire simple quand on peut faire compliqué ?" (= why should we make it simple when we can make it complicated ?).

I should perhaps apply to work as a special advisor for the People's Republic of China and promote this innovative vision of "socialism with pants down characteristics". [not a political remark - I am simply referring to the local concept of "socialism with Chinese characteristics" and adapting it to the challenges of the future]

They're clearly working towards and AI that likes porn but is ashamed by it.

/probably in reality they are trying to figure out how to better identify porn so they can censor it.

I thought that. A trouser-based sensor would be far more effective.

So the drawback here is that the subjects need to wear a brainwave sensor on their heads. It would be much easier to have them wear an Apple watch to detect increases in heartrate while seated or furious wrist motion.

I had to read the article several times to make any type of sense from it. I think that the sensors are to be used for the censors who are trying to detect pornagraphic images as part of their civic duty:points:. The supposed need for this sensor is due to the censors not recognizing porn images quickly enough, I think. I may have just made up an entirely different story.

It's a censor sensor?
