I'm happy to talk about my 2009 orang-pendek expedition. Looks like i might be going after the deathworm again this year.

Colin Wilson would be great.

Irish fortean Ronan Coghlan would be great, he's hugley entertaining and can talk about anything.

Dr Lars Thomas from Denmark. He's a mne of info on Scandinavian cryptids. Losts of stuff never seen in the English speaking world.

How about some fortean who has not lectured in the West before, some one from Japan, China or Russia. A couple of years back we had Gregory Panchenko from the Ukraine, he was amazing.

It's early days and we weren't expecting to be doing an UnCon until the spring of 2011, but it might just happen.

Feel free to post your suggestions for speakers and other stuff here - let's get the ball rolling...

I'd like to see an UnCon outside London.
While I realise London is easy to get to it is a bit expensive, especially if you have a long way to travel.
I nominate my home town of Harrogate in North Yorkshire. It has a reputation as a conference centre, is easy to get to being close to both Leeds and York (a Fortean place if there ever was one) and while it is expensive by Yorkshire standards, it is still cheaper than the capital.

Perhaps the next UnCon could take over (part of?) a hotel for the weekend, like many other conventions do. This would allow for more socialising between and after talks, especially if there is a bar. :D
This would allow for other things like a Big Forten Dinner (toad-in-the-hole anyone?).

UnCon outside London is something we've toyed with on previous occasions. I think it will happen, but not this year as we have so little time to organise.

Possible dates are now looking like one of the weekends straddling Hallowe'en:

October 23-24

Or

November 6-7

Any thoughts, preferences, questions?

Big preference for the 23rd / 24th of October - I'm on holiday immediately before hand so that will make getting down easier and Saturday the 6th of November wanting to go and see Rick Wakeman and Jon Anderson in concert!

OK Gordon, we'll plan UnCon around Rick and Jon's no doubt full diary - are there any other prog legends we should take into consideration at this point?

Can we have it on a date when Roger Waters definitely CAN'T attend?

Date for your diaries: Fortean Times UnConvention 2010 is now set for the weekend of 23/24 Oct in London - keep watching for more news as we have it.

Keep the suggestion coming as now we have a date we can get down to some programming of talks

And, yes, let's invite Rick!

As for who/what I'd like to see at UnCon, you can't go wrong with Jan Bondeson; his talks are always entertaining. Jan being a Who, rather than a What. :-D

An update on the almasty investigation would be good too. What became of those samples?

Last UnCon, we had electronic aura readings. While many would consider this utter bunkum ("if you open your mind too far, your brain will fall out"), I would be interested to do it again and see if the new reading is anything like the first one I had done. :)
On a similar note, a talk about orgonite would be interesting.

Last time, there were large posters of old FT covers going around. Perhaps, this time, posters could be made available of some of the fantastic cover art we've seen on FT over the last few years, sans cover text, bar codes, etc.

Damn you! Just when I thought I'd get by without going to the UK this year, now I have to try and make reservations.

Actually, glad to hear it. I don't want this to die, and of course I'll be trying to get there.

The 'almasty' hair samples were from a modern human of the racial type generaly found in the area. We think that perhapse a hunter may have taken refuge in the cave.
However we have orang-pendek hair hunder analysis and the results might be more intresting.

I'm with Vincent on getting Jan Bondeson back, he should be the first player on the Uncon team sheet.

I've always enjoyed Malcolm Gaskill's presentations

Star striker in Jon Ronson or Graham Hancock (wasnt he due to attend some years back?)

What ever the line up sure it will be as interesting and entertaining as always.

UnCon is starting to take shape - there will be some info in FT264, but here's a preview of the line-up so far:

Dr Jan Bondeson (by popular request, clearly! And, no, it wouldn't be Uncon without him)

Paul Devereux

Richard Freeman

Jon Downes

Lucie Skeaping (the lovely host of Radio 3's Early Music Show)

Charles Foster (author of Wired for God?)

Mike Hallowell

Andy Roberts

David Clarke

Ian Ridpath (astronomer extraordinaire)

Gail-Nina Anderson

Gordon Rutter

Loads more to be condfirmed, and I'll post topics and stuff soon; keep the suggestions coming too.

Looks like a great line-up.

Ever thought of Christopher Fowler? I don't know if he does this sort of stuff, but his Bryant & May detective novels have some distinctly Fortean aspects.

Well done on avoiding Halloween weekend this time :)

However, just a week after James Randi's 'Amazing Meeting' in London, it might be tough to fit them both in, but I'll try my best.
