A Tribute To Joseph Pujol / Le Pétomane

Joseph Pujol is one of those turn of the century performers that seems to have been overlooked by history. Sadly, I don't believe any recordings of his performances exist and hence are sadly lost to posterity. For those of you interested in his life and work, here's a neat little biography of a true pioneer in his field.

Not really forgotten. His art was immortalized in a short film from
around 1970, starring Leonard Rossiter.

He seems to have a modern equivalent in a man who calls himself
Mister Methane.

I've seen the Leonard Rossiter film several times. It's a touching tribute to a bygone world.

Actually the second and third pictures of him remind me of the Monty Python sketch with Michael Palin as "The man with a tape-recorder stuck up his nose."

If only to illustrate that such a stage act was popular, a 1904 sound recording of Le Pétomane imitator 'Mr. LeFires' can be found on YouTube:
