Agave Flowers In Cornwall. Last Seen In 1976

"The agave is a spikey, succulent native to Mexico and the primary ingredient used in the making of tequila. Agaves are only found successfully growing outdoors in Britain in the far South West. As they flower so rarely, visitors will have a special treat at Glendurgan in February, as both plants are expected to flower at the same time. The agaves, one only marginally smaller than the other, will each sprout a wand in the region of twenty feet, upon which a mass of delicate yellow flowers will form.

The last time that an agave flowered at Glendurgan was back in 1976, which happens to be the same year that the Head Gardener, Steven Porter was born. The agave flowers once in its lifetime and then it gradually dies having used up all of its energy to produce such a magnificent flowering display. The whole process, however, is expected to last a least a year so visitors will have plenty of opportunity to witness this very rare event."
