Albino & Leucistic Animals (Pigmentation Deficiency)

A leucistic deer has been spotted in upstate New York.

White deer caught on camera in New York

Wildlife officials in New York said a white deer caught on camera in West Seneca "appears to be a leucistic white-tailed deer." ...

TJ Pignataro of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation told WKBW-TV the animal "appears to be a leucistic white-tailed deer."

"Leucism, where there are white patches, or in some cases all white fur, is a rare condition. True albinism, where the animal completely lacks pigment, even in the eyes, is even more rare than leucism. The deer in the photo is not an albino deer," Pignataro said.

Unique albino ocelot confirmed by scientific tests in Colombia

Colombia confirmed the first case of an albino ocelot, after carrying out genetic tests on a feline with white fur and red eyes.

The ocelot was found as a kitten, weighing just 440 grams, in the rural zone of Amalfi and was first thought to be a puma jaguarundi.

Medellin's Conservation Park undertook genetic testing on the animal, concluding it was actually a leopardus pardalis, a native species of ocelot that is found all across the Americas.

As adults, these medium-sized cats grow to between 55 and 100 centimetres, live from 7-10 years and usually have a unique colour pattern, unlike this specimen.

"It is the third-largest feline we have in Colombia after the jaguar and the puma," park director Jorge Aubad said.

"So far, this is the first known case in the world of an albino leopardus pardalis, an ocelot."

Rare albino squirrel spotted in same spot as legendary resident

Albino squirrels are a very rare phenomenon of nature, with only one in every 100,000 of the animals being born with the genetic condition . It is even rarer to spot two in the same place, so Gomshall resident David Stretch could not believe his eyes when he spotted a white squirrel in a Dorking churchyard - the same old haunt as the town's famous Dorking squirrel Albi.

Albi could often be spotted prancing around the St Martin’s Churchyard, before he was sadly killed by a car more than a decade ago in October 2009. Not many albino squirrels have been spotted in the area since.

In April 2021, another white squirrel was spotted in exactly the same place. Dorking resident Paul Smart told SurreyLive at the time: “It was the first time I had ever seen an albino squirrel. I was just on an Easter walk and had cut back through the church grounds, where there are often plenty of grey squirrels. The white squirrel was just playing with the grey ones behind the church under the trees.”

I have a photograph of a similar squirrel from a friend whom I offered to improve a set of fuzzy photos for her, as her mobile camera was well-on the way out and the pixels rate was well down (a well used second hand one).
She took the photograph in her back garden ~ which is also in Surrey.
A true white squirrel (*note the black eye ~ so not an albino). This is the best I could do to define it better than it was, as you could hardly make it out properly in the original photo. Unfortunately she believes it's come to harm somehow, as she hasn't seen it since she took this photograph.

Police hunt gunman as rare white stag shot dead with high velocity rifle in Kent woods

Police said it was the second deer found dead at the beauty spot in a matter of weeks. The first animal was reported dead on January 20.

Both animals had sustained gunshot wounds to their face, which officers believe was caused by a high-powered rifle.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "While the location is remote, police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incidents, which are believed to have happened at night".

I really, really hate the human race some days :(

I understand there are arguments to made for shooting for food or population control.

But what kind of person thinks, "Wow, look at this rare and beautiful animal! Let's shoot it in the face!"

F**k those people :incan:

“Albi” was killed accidentally by a car; the squirrel depicted immediately above has simply disappeared. lt could well have died of natural causes, been killed by one of the doubtless numerous cats in the area, or just moved on.

Poor max is baffled by your post & thinks it's in reply to the squirrel story above. He hasn’t seen the stag shooting post as I’m on ignore.

It was posted by a user you have on ignore, sorry for any confusion xxx

Fortunately the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Trust got involved and the cobra survived.

Rare and deadly albino cobra slithers into house during intense rainstorm

The white snake was safely captured by wildlife experts in India before being released back into the wild.

An extremely rare and potentially deadly albino cobra had to be removed from a house in India after the white snake slithered in during a severe rainstorm.

Neighbors spotted the pale cobra climbing out of fast flowing water on the ground and into a passageway beside the house in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu state, southern India, on May 3. Experts from the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Trust (WNCT) later arrived to safely capture the snake, which was then released into the wild.

The 5-foot-long (1.5 meters) snake was identified as an albino Indian cobra (Naja naja), WNCT representatives wrote on Facebook(opens in new tab). The species, which are also known as the spectacled cobra, is considered one of the "big four" snake species that are responsible for the most snakebite cases in India.

Albinism is a genetic condition that prevents animals from producing the pigment melanin, which gives color to their skin, fur, feathers or scales. It is recessive, meaning both parents must possess the gene and pass it onto their offspring. Albino animals also lack pigment in their irises, meaning that they have pink or red eyes, which results in reduced vision or total blindness; moreover, their skin is highly susceptible to sunburns.

Hmm. Two squirrels with a rare genetic anomaly appear in the same spot. Makes you wonder if the local squirrel population has some sort of mutation that makes albinism more likely.

World’s only known albino panda

Ultra-rare footage shows the latest of just a handful of glimpses of the world's only known albino panda since it was born five or six years ago.

The all-white bear was filmed by a motion-activated camera crossing through a vast nature reserve in the mountains of China's Sichuan province.

It's only the third recorded sighting of the animal, which was photographed as a cub in May 2019 and filmed in 2020 by similar devices in the area.
The new footage, which shows it interacting with typical pandas, appears to confirm for the first time that others of its kind don't mind its unusual appearance.

Li Sheng, a researcher from Peking University, told China's state broadcaster CCTV: 'So far we can tell that the white panda is doing very well in its species group and in the natural environment.

'It is still unclear whether its gene will be inherited and steadily passed on in the small panda population, and more follow-up research is needed.'

Watch a Rare White Grizzly Bear Graze on the Side of a Canadian Highway

Last June, wildlife technicians working for Parks Canada trapped the 6-year-old sow grizzly. They outfitted it with a GPS-tracking collar and released it into a more remote location—away from the busy highway that winds between Banff and Yoho National Parks and the Canada Pacific Railway. But the bear quickly returned after the 2022 trapping, and it appears to be back in the highway corridor hanging out by the road again this summer.

Locals have named the bear “Nakoda.”

Rare white magpie spotted near Lowertown, Fishguard

An incredibly rare white magpie, thought to be one in a million has been spotted in Pembrokeshire.

Amateur wildlife photographer Terry Wright snapped the bird in a field near to the old Fort above Lowertown.

He said that it was with three other black and white magpies and that the other birds seemed to accept their differently feathered friend with the four of them taking flight together.
