I've walked around loads of suburbs in Australia and a few town centres and NEVER seen a cat. I remarked on it at the time. London suburban streets are littered with cats, lying in the sun or walking along walls or just loitering in their way. In all the suburbs and towns I've been to in Australia, I have never encountered one cat. I've never even seen one inside looking out through a window either. I presume that either my experience is atypical and I've just been unlucky and all the cats come out to play once I've passed by, or very few cats are kept domestically. Loads of dogs about everywhere - no cats.
By contrast, I've lived in Australia my whole life, and apart from the cats I've owned myself, I run into them all the time. There is an increasing trend to keep them indoors, as they are disastrous for the local environment, but even here in Canberra where there are laws about letting your cats outdoors, still see quite a few of them around.

Maybe it's just the circles I move in in Australia. Mostly dog owners!

Something that claims to be "Whatever the case, this is truly a remarkable account and the earliest big cat newspaper report in Powys - and possibly – Welsh history. "

The mysterious Abermule Wildcat – Powys' first big cat sighting

A retelling of a case from "A report in the Montgomeryshire County Times on July 22, 1893 accounts for a bizarre occurrence in Abermule when a big cat was not just sighted - but chased through a village pub and shot at by locals. "

'Two of the crack shots of the place at once gave chase but failed to bring the prey down with the contents of the four barrels of their guns.
Not so 'crack shots' then! :wear:

They might just have been the best shots that were there at the time. As I sit here alone in my house I can guarantee I am the best shot here!

There was one that was spotted in Chiswick about 4 years before I moved there. I was really miffed at not moving to Chiswick earlier in life. I kept a watchfall eye out for it though. But never saw anything. I did come across some Posh Chiswick Totty who said that they had seen something years ago that looked like big black cat. It gave the lazy Chiswick Police Force something to look for. They then asked me if I had a gazebo. I said no and they told me to get one. A lady with gazebo in the garden has a place for her thoughts to gather!

ABCs have always been one of my absolute favourite Fortean subjects, probably stemming from my 3 experiences with them, one detailed earlier on this thread.

Would anyone be able to advise on what is widely regarded to be the Gold standard of evidence in photo or video form when it comes to ABCs? I've been doing a search and there's almost too much material to sift through. Is there anything that ABC specialists are in agreement on as being highly likely to be genuine proof?

There was an article in one of the Fortean Studies books, so going back a bit now... I think it was called Bodies of Evidence or somesuch, with a list of bodies of ABCs recovered in the UK up to then... Quite surprising how much had been recovered.

Has the relentless advance of the the internet made witnesses of Fortean phenomena less inclined to report their experiences to their local Police? It's now much easier to contact your local/national UFO or Big Cat group than it was in the past

Lions, tigers and cheetahs among 4,000 dangerous wild animals kept as pets in UK

A new survey has revealed that nearly 4,000 dangerous wild animals are being privately kept in Great Britain, under licence.

Our research reviewed the number of Dangerous Wild Animal (DWA) Act licences granted by local authorities across England, Scotland and Wales, and the variety of species being privately kept. In total, we received responses from 364 of the 371 local authorities contacted. The data highlighted that in 2020, a total of 210 DWA licences were granted for the keeping of 3,951 individual wild animals including:

  • 320 wild cats (including 61 big cats – 11 lions, eight tigers, 11 leopards, 18 pumas, 10 cheetahs, two ligers and one jaguar)
  • 274 primates (including over 150 lemurs)
  • 158 crocodilians
  • 508 venomous snakes (including 57 diamondback rattlesnakes)
  • 332 scorpions
  • 106 venomous lizards
  • Two elephants.
Other species on the DWA list that are being kept as pets or in private collections in the UK include zebras, camels, fossa (a kind of civet), hyena, sun bears, wolves, and otters.

maximus otter

ABC photo, Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, 24 March 2021.

It looks underfed. Tail appears longer in proportion than I would expect for a domestic cat, but I'm no expert.

The article starts:
A long black tail, a distinctive feline movement and not a wide as a Labrador, could this image show a large cat roaming roaming across the Gloucestershire countryside?

The creature was seen in fields just outside Stroud yesterday (March 24) at around 11am, and the man who captures it on camera is convinced about what he saw.

The mystery animal was spotted near Ham Mill Lane in the village of Thrupp just outside the town walking through a field which is surrounded by trees.

The man who wishes to remain anonymous spotted the creature was just 100 yards away when he took the picture on his phone.

To me, the proportions are wrong: it’s too long for its height.

Also, is that black arc near its hind leg some sort of stand to which it’s attached?

Not so sure about this one 'maximuis otter,' as it has been reported in the area from time-to-time. And this is an interesting pre-report to....

Admittedly, the s-t-r-e-t-c-h of the cat does appear to be extra low and long, but apparently these cats vary quite a bit.

The proportions make it look very much like a black cheetah in profile.

Just come across this 'Mirror' article on this mystery big black cat story, and there is a discrepancy with the two photos (same image) of the cat. Now I'm wondering if it really is just a fake article/photo? See if you can spot the difference - and try to explain why the image is distorted! :sherlock:

These are the pics from the Mirror report, though they print them in reverse order, i.e. the lower one (named "*****2.jpg") first.

To my eye, the lower one looks more boar-shaped at the head end. Were it not for the long, curved tail, I'd assume that the photographer had snapped some shooter's steel target of a boar:

I'm not really getting what you mean about "spotting the difference".

Cynically, I've just looked at the Google earth image of the probable locus:

Ham-Mill-Lane-Thrupp-ABC-03.jpg

...and I noticed that the lane which runs north/south near the centre of the image is named "Bagpath Lane". Is it beyond possibility that someone heard that and thought, "Bagpath? Thounds like Bagputh, eh?", then a moment later: "Wait a minute..."

Also... just realised, that the image/stance of the 'cat' in the first picture is exactly the same stance in the second picture, yet the time of the second picture and the obvious difference in surrounding is completely different!
