A link about that fireball that did damage a day or so ago in Argentina. It's from Inexplicata. http://bit.ly/qpBGxg

My thought is, well, maybe silly.

What if it were a piece of the space station that flew off over the weekend and orbited the earth, finally coming down, well, there.

Silly thought? Seems an odd coincidence that these events happened in the space of a couple days, doesn't it?

Or is my conspiracy radar detector a little off today?

I thought the satellite was much further North than Argentina.

If it may have been an odd shape, perhaps the reentry into the earth's atmosphere could have caused it to veer enough to change course. All it could have taken was a minute change of course in the upper atmosphere to cause it to be so far off the expected reentry.

Not sure, just sayin', hm.

They did say that pieces would "fall off"...

Ah, I have a vague memory of it being possible that objects can "bounce off" the atmosphere much like a stone skipping on water, which would make their re-entry impossible to calculate...

I will have to google that bit.

It's a concern for manned spaceflight, particularly, that there is a very narrow window to re-enter the atmosphere. Too shallow, and you can bounce off, as Zilch said, too deep, and you burn up.

In the case of de-orbiting a satellite, you typically don't care whether it burns on the way down, although it might be a concern if it contains hazardous waste. such as spent fuel. In any event, the range of acceptable angles is much larger.

Still, they've been doing this for a long time. There was a possibility that Apollo 13, for example, wouldn't come in at the right angle, due to the space craft basically being an uncontrollable pile of wreckage.

Hmm - depends on what they mean by UFO (i.e. do they mean it in a literal sense or are they implying that it was some sort of structured craft under intelligent control).

Hmm. Short post from the previously mentioned Inexplicata about an incident that happened the previous Saturday. In Argentina.

But that tends to give differing accounts of what was allegedly seen - it's described as 'shiny', whilst elsewhere it says that it was a 'fireball'. It's difficult to tell which is an actual recount of what was seen and what is being used to describe the situation after the fact.

Here's another update. Apparently, someone who had used their cellphone to take a picture of the falling object was briefly detained by police and the cellphone confiscated.

Update for closure ...

The police detention resulted from the fact the young man fabricated the picture (or, per his later statement, his little sister took a picture of an actual fireball some days earlier). His cellphone photo was the seed for the whole fireball story.

He was detained for "false witnessing." As it turned out, he was blocks away from the fatal scene when the explosion occurred.

The investigators concluded the explosion was caused by a gas leak associated with a pizza oven. The gas accumulated in the building until it was touched off by a spark or similar ignition trigger.

See, for example:

If any pizzas were ejected during the explosion, that could cause flying saucer sightings...
