Belgian neo-Nazis in 'terror plot'

Nicholas Watt in Brussels
Friday September 8, 2006
The Guardian

Belgian police yesterday arrested 17 alleged neo-Nazis, mostly serving soldiers, who were said to be planning to destabilise the country's institutions in a series of terrorist attacks. In simultaneous raids on five army barracks and 18 private addresses across the northern Flanders half of Belgium, police uncovered a homemade bomb and numerous weapons.

The raids by 150 police officers in East Flanders, Antwerp and Limburg were the most dramatic breakthrough in a two-year investigation into far-right activists allegedly operating inside the armed forces.

The federal prosecutor's office, which is not limited by the sort of pre-trial restrictions in force in Britain, described the arrested people as mainly "soldiers and people with an extreme right ideology who clearly express themselves through racism, xenophobia, Holocaust denial, anti-semitism and neo-Nazism".

The main suspect, who is a member of the neo-Nazi Blood and Honour Flanders group, recruited in military bases throughout Flanders, the Flemish-speaking half of Belgium.

The arrests are likely to have a strong impact in Belgium, where mainstream politicians are bracing themselves for significant advances by the hard-right Vlaams Belang party in next month's local elections. The party insists it is non-violent, however, and distances itself from neo-Nazis.

I don't know too much about Belgium's polical and cultural climate so can anyone fill me on what's motivating these people. Is there a large immigration problem? Muslim issues? European state?

There has always been a sizeable fascist element among the Flemish population. Dont think it was historically as strong amongst the Walloons but this may be changing.

During WWII several SS Divisions were completely made up of Belgian volunteers. THeir leader fled after the war and died in Francos Spain. Cant remember his name.

Cheers. Any idea what's motivating them now though?

RESISTANCES: THE ENGLISH PAGES (BACK TO FRENCH PAGES)
Concerned with the progress of right-wing extremism and the adoption of neo-fascist ideas by mainstream politics in Belgium and all over the world the anti-fascist magazine RésistanceS saw the light of day in may 1997 after several months of preparatory work.

RésistanceS wishes to make a practical contribution to the fight against fascism, racism, xenofobia, extreme nationalism and the paralysing "pensée unique". RésistanceS is fully independent and is not linked to any political organisation whatsoever.

RésistanceS is put together by a team of volunteers with different ethnical and socio-cultural backgrounds from all over the country (Brussels, Wallonia and Flanders). RésistanceS appears four times a year.

Our primary objectives are: to expose the extreme right, to analyse the conditions allowing neo-fascism to develop, to prove the worthlessness of right-wing extremist ‘alternatives’, to denounce the influence of neo-fascism on mainstream politics, to establish an anti-fascist network for individuals and organisations

Israeli 'neo-Nazi gang' arrested

Israeli police say they have broken up a gang of neo-Nazis who are accused of carrying out attacks on foreigners, gay people and religious Jews.
The eight suspects, aged 16-21, are all Israeli citizens from the former Soviet Union. They were arrested a month ago, but the news only emerged on Saturday.

Police say searches of their homes yielded Nazi uniforms, portraits of Adolf Hitler, knives, guns and TNT.

Israel was founded in the wake of the Nazi Holocaust in which millions died.

The arrests follow a year-long inquiry which began after a synagogue in Petah Tikva, a city east of Tel Aviv, was desecrated with graffiti of Nazi swastikas and the name of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed his horror at what he called "violence for the sake of violence."

"I am sure that there is not a person in Israel who can remain indifferent to these scenes, which indicate that we too as a society have failed in the education of these youths," he said.

Tattoos

The eight accused, who include the group's alleged leader, are all from Petah Tikva.

The gang members sported tattoos popular with white supremacists - including the number 88, code for Heil Hitler because "H" is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

"We believe that this is the main gang working in the area... the main gang that exists [in Israel] that attempts to use Hitler's ideology," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP news agency.

Police say the gang members would target homosexuals, Jews who wore a skull cap and drug addicts, often video taping their attacks.

"It is difficult to believe that Nazi ideology sympathisers can exist in Israel, but it is a fact," Revital Almog, the police official who led the investigation, told Israeli public radio.

Video tapes

The suspects have admitted assaulting a number of people in Tel Aviv, most of them foreign workers.

Ms Almog said the gang would pick on someone who appeared unable to defend themselves and then attack.

They often filmed or photographed the violence.

Footage of the attacks show people lying on the ground whilst being kicked by more than one assailant.

In one clip a man is hit around the back of the head with a bottle.

According to the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz one video shows gang members surrounding a Russian drug addict as he admits to being a Jew. The youths then order him onto his knees to beg for forgiveness for being Jewish and a drug addict before viciously beating not only him, but also another man who tries to intervene.

The suspects all migrated to Israel under the Law of Return which allows anyone with at least one Jewish grandparent to become a citizen.

Ms Almog said of the accused, "their connection to Judaism is distant, through grandparents or distant family connections".

A Conspiracy by National Action to murder Rosie Cooper MP and a Detective Constable has been foiled. Fortunately a member of National Action defected and revealed their plans. As well as Renshaw five others are facing charges.

An alleged member of the banned neo-Nazi group National Action has admitted to plotting to kill a British MP for “white jihad” and making threats to kill a police officer.

Jack Renshaw, 23, of Skelmersdale, Lancashire, bought a 48cm (19in) gladius machete to kill the West Lancashire Labour MP Rosie Cooper last summer. Afterwards, he planned to take hostages to lure a police officer, DC Victoria Henderson, to the scene so he could kill her too, jurors heard.

On the opening day of his trial at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, Renshaw pleaded guilty to preparing acts of terrorism and making threats to kill a police officer. The judge, Mr Justice Robert Jay, directed the jury to deliver a formal guilty verdict on the two charges. Renshaw also faces a third charge of membership of National Action, which he denies.

He is on trial alongside Christopher Lythgoe, 32, from Warrington, who is charged with encouraging Renshaw to murder Cooper on behalf of National Action, believing the act would be committed. Lythgoe denies the charges. Four other men – Garron Helm, 24, of Seaforth, Merseyside; Matthew Hankinson, 24, of Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside; Andrew Clark, 33, and Michael Trubini, 35, both of Warrington – are also charged with membership of the far-right group. They deny the charge.

The court heard that Renshaw had bought the machete to kill Cooper between 5 June and 3 July last year. He made threats while in a pub in Warrington on 1 July last year, it was alleged.

Duncan Atkinson QC, prosecuting, told the court that National Action had engaged since 2013 in a campaign of “virulently racist, antisemitic and homophobic propaganda through which it sought to stir up a violent ‘race war’ against ethnic minorities and others it perceived as ‘race traitors’.” It was such activities, culminating it its support of the murder of the Labour MP Jo Cox in June 2016, that led to its proscription by the home secretary in December 2016. ...

The court heard how nothing of significance would happen without Lythgoe’s approval, and that was why Renshaw brought up the plan. Lythgoe’s alleged response was to give his consent by saying “don’t fuck it up”. He also advised Renshaw to take precautions to ensure his media devices were not linked to other members in the group, the court heard.

Renshaw allegedly said he would make a video for release after the attack, saying it was on behalf of National Action. Lythgoe suggested Renshaw should attack the home secretary instead of “nobody” Cooper, but Renshaw rejected the idea, saying the minister would be too well protected, jurors heard.

Political thread, even though I don't like neo-nazis.

If this is a political thread then so are the posts about Islamic Terrorism.

This is quite clearly about a conspiracy to kill an MP and a Police Officer organised by a banned terrorist organisation.

Update on trial of Nation Action terrorists.

Christopher Lythgoe, 32, of Warrington, was arrested by police investigating a plot to murder the Labour MP Rosie Cooper and a female police officer. He was jailed for eight years at the end of a six-week trial at the Old Bailey on Wednesday.

Matthew Hankinson, 24, of Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, was also found guilty of belonging to National Action and jailed for six years. A jury acquitted Garron Helm, 24, of Seaforth, Merseyside, of being a member of the group.

Jack Renshaw, 23, from Skelmersdale, Lancashire, has pleaded guilty to preparing to engage in an act of terrorism in relation to the plot against Cooper and threatening a police officer. He has also been convicted of stirring up racial hatred in speeches in 2016, it can now be reported.

Renshaw’s plan was foiled by a whistleblower, Robbie Mullen, 25, who leaked details of a meeting at the Friar Penketh pub in Warrington to the campaign group Hope Not Hate in July last year. Lythgoe was found not guilty of encouraging Renshaw.

Mr Justice Jay described National Action as having a “truly evil and dystopian vision” of waging a race war. Without Lythgoe’s obsessive determination to keep it going it would have “withered and died on the vine”. ...

Det Supt Will Chatterton, head of investigations for counter-terrorism policing for the north-west, said outside court:

“Today’s result is a body blow to extreme rightwing organisations such as National Action. It sends out a clear message that counter-terrorism officers and partner agencies will rigorously identify and investigate any violently extreme individual or group who seek to bring a reign of terror to our shores.”

One of the news articles says one of the plotters bought a 'gladius machete'. I looked that up and it's a sword made to an ancient Roman shape but out of modern materials. Not really a 'machete' as it's double-edged. Nasty stuff but apparently it's legal to have swords in the UK so long as you don't walk around in public with them.

Another National action case. A Miss Hitler contest?!

A "Miss Hitler" contest entrant sent a "kill, kill, kill" text to her boyfriend after talking about gassing people, a court heard.

Alice Cutter, who is accused of being a member of banned group National Action, was texting her partner Mark Jones on June 22, 2016. The pair were discussing by text how to make lethal chlorine gas from household chemicals. She messaged Mr Jones: "Yes, yes, yes. Kill, kill, kill."

Mr Jones was giving evidence at Birmingham Crown Court.

Ms Cutter, 22, and Mr Jones, 24, both of Mulhalls Mill, Sowerby Bridge, near Halifax, West Yorkshire both deny being members of the organisation banned in December 2016. Ms Cutter, replying to Mr Jones, said: "So potentially, this stuff could be bottled, corked and thrown through someone's window to gas them to death?"

Her boyfriend replied: "Yes and no - it would work but you would need it on a much bigger scale to do any real damage. You're better off mixing them and locking someone in a room."

His girlfriend, Ms Cutter, had entered a "Miss Hitler" contest under the name "Buchenwald Princess" referencing the infamous Nazi concentration camp.

Another neo-nazi conspiracy foiled.

A teenage neo-Nazi who wrote about an "inevitable race war" in his diary and identified a series of possible targets has been convicted of preparing terrorist acts.

The 16-year-old from Durham listed the locations in his "guerrilla warfare" manual, Manchester Crown Court heard. He was convicted of six terror offences and will be sentenced on 7 January. The boy is the youngest person to be convicted of planning a terrorist attack in the UK.

He was convicted of preparing terrorist acts, disseminating a terrorist publication, possessing an article for a purpose connected to terrorism and three counts of possessing documents useful to someone preparing acts of terrorism. Jurors heard that, in the course of his internet searches, he looked for a "map of synagogues in the UK", "Newcastle synagogue", and that he wrote of planning to conduct an arson spree targeting synagogues in the Durham area using Molotov cocktails.

This case is in court again.

An alleged member of a neo-Nazi terror group in England entered a “Miss Hitler” beauty contest weeks after her partner visited a Second World War concentration camp’s execution room, a court there has heard.

Alice Cutter, 23, used the name Buchenwald Princess to enter the “sick” on-line pageant in June 2016, hoping to attract new members to National Action, a jury at Birmingham Crown Court was told. Cutter and her boyfriend Mark Jones, 25, both of Sowerby Bridge near Halifax, West Yorkshire, deny being members of the “unapologetically racist” group between December 2016 and September 2017.

The pair are standing trial alongside Garry Jack, 24, from Heathland Avenue in Birmingham, and 18-year-old Connor Scothern, of Bagnall Avenue, Nottingham, who also deny membership of the banned group. Opening the case today, prosecuting barrister Barnaby Jameson QC alleged that all four were part of “a fellowship of hate” made up by some “50 or 60” hardcore activist members of National Action.

Hang them all. Apologies for being political have no telerance for Nazi's. A story that's a bit off thract from ramon post:
When I was being processed in boot camp a sergeant major spotted a guy covered with nazi tattoos. He was removed forcibly into another room and it sounded like he received quite a beating. I later learned the sergeant major had actually fought Nazi Germany and had seen prison camps. I don't think the service would allow this now but in 1970, well.

Tunnels in the Lake district, not quite as good as subterranean bases in Antarctica.

The “chief propagandist” of a far-right extremist group discussed digging a tunnel in the Lake District as a base for their “operations”, a UK court has heard.

Kurt McGowan, of Workington, Cumbria, was jailed for seven years at Preston Crown Court on Friday for four offences of collecting terrorist information and three counts of disseminating terrorist publications.

The court heard McGowan was described as “our very own Goebbels”, a reference to Nazi Joseph Goebbels, in a group on messaging app Telegram, where he used the handle Red Church.

The 23-year-old made a heart gesture with his hands to his mother, who was in tears in the public gallery, as he was taken from the dock. ...

Joe Allman, prosecuting, told the court an undercover officer gained access to the Telegram group used by McGowan and between six to 12 others in August 2020.

He said: “The messages make it clear the group considered they were, or at least were in the process of forming, an active far-right cell.

“They actively discussed digging a tunnel as a base for operations, where that might be located and how it should be constructed.

“Mr McGowan suggested the Lake District for what he called its extensive woodland.”

He said McGowan also suggested they survey the national park for “phase one” of the operation.

The court heard McGowan was part of Telegram group The Hand and then Exiled393 UK. ...

Other members included Matthew Cronjager, who was jailed in 2021 for plotting to shoot an Asian friend because he slept with “white chicks”.

Mr Allman said McGowan was “chief propagandist” in the group, which considered itself a para-military unit and shared views which were antisemitic, anti-muslim, misogynistic and showed extreme homophobia.

The court heard another of the themes in the group was the suggestion that “non-white” people were inferior and needed to be exterminated.

McGowan shared documents which included information about fighting techniques, instructions on manufacturing ammunition and tactics for guerilla warfare, Mr Allman said. ...

What annoys me with these kind of people who talk of such things, is that they wouldn't last five minutes in a proper army. They would doubtful even get through basic training.

What annoys me is that the courts come down hard on a ridiculous fantasist that would never have the resources to mount a terror campaign, and who appears to be so dim and easily apprehended that no real terrorist would have anything to do with him. Yet some vicious C##t of a thug can batter a helpless old lady, steal her purse for a few quid, and will never see the inside of one of His Majesty’s establishments of correction.
We had a pub on the Old Kent Road called “The World Turned Upside Down”, which appears to be exactly where we are today in respect of sentencing.

Agreed. Or someone who has been caught speeding for the 20th time and this time dragged a little girl under the vehicle, killing her and her grandmother. Yes, this happened a few years in Birmingham. Actually, I think it was the 22nd time. When I suggested what to do with him I was called a 'Nazi' amongst other names.

I shan't pretend there's any great discussion going on with respect to the thread title, nor that the iniquity you have mentioned is unimportant, but this thread should remain on the topic of Neo-Nazi Terrorism.

Indeed, many granny bashers get off lightly but neo-nazi terrorists have killed one MP attacked others, been behind bombing campaigns and many physical attacks on minority communities and others who they perceive as being their enemies. Those involved in the case above were far from being harmless Walter Mittys. It should also be remembered that Muslim teenagers have gotten lengthy prison sentences for just being in possession of downloaded videos.

You made the video available to extremists and potential terrorists. You continue to have far-right views and expressed no real remorse and are assessed as having extreme risk of re-offending."
