Coming next Feb:
Based on the award-winning novel, Altered Carbon takes place in a future where the human mind can now be digitized and downloaded into a "cortical stack" and placed into new bodies, called sleeves.

The series follows Envoy soldier Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), who is brought back to life centuries later to investigate the attempted murder of Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), the wealthiest man on Earth. As the investigation progresses, Kovacs comes to learn that his past isn’t nearly as buried as he thought.

The series debuts exclusively on Netflix February 2nd, 2018.

Has anyone read the books?

Looking forward to this. I have enjoyed reading all Morgan's novels, especially A Land Fit For Heroes trilogy, featuring a gay "Conan".

I shall look out for this, as it's my kind of thing I expect Netflix will poke me with a virtual stick.

I enjoyed the first season, not so keen on the second. It feels like they dialed up the action, at the expense of plot.

I liked both seasons. I actually thought S2 was a bit better, a real feel for what a colony might be like, especially it's foundation. Great plot development about the aliens.

Some interesting stuff about the TV versions.

Richard K. Morgan, author of Altered Carbon, the 2002 cyberpunk novel that was adapted for the brilliant Netflix TV series (Season 2 dropped on February 27), was the first-ever guest on the Inverse sci-fi happy hour this week, and he chose something very appropriate to read for our current global moment. Morgan took the opportunity to read from Broken Angels, his second novel, starting at the beginning. "It takes place in a hospital in the midst of a war context. It's cheery stuff, indeed," he says. He also took a few questions about the role of sci-fi in these increasingly science non-fiction times, how he worked with Netflix writers in Los Angeles, "essentially just spinning up cool sh*t" for the TV version of his book.

Below are a few more highlights from Sci-Fi Happy Hour:

ON ADAPTING HIS OWN BOOK INTO A SHOW...

[Altered Carbon Season 2] really isn’t an adaptation of Broken Angels. It borrows from it; it takes a bunch of the cool stuff. It’s very much got its own trajectory. Even at the end Season 1, the story was already starting to diverge from where the book had gone so their launch point for Season 2 is a lot different than the launch point that I had when I was writing Broken Angels. I on’t honestly think you could call it an adaptation. It’s a borrowing if you like. But they’ve also mixed it up with a bunch of stuff from the third book, Woken Furies.

In terms of the writer’s room, I spent time out there, essentially just spinning up cool shit. That was my job — to go there and help with the cool shit angle. It was brilliant. I had a really great time. They had a bunch of really talented people. You’re in a room full of people throwing ideas around and it was great. I spent about a week out there.”

Altered Carbon: Resleeved: An anime spin off from the TV series. Takeshi gets involved in Yakuza intrigue, he has to investigate a killing and protect a teen tattooist, Holly. A UN CTAC operative, Gena also gets involved. Holly is to play a vital role in a succession ceremony in a Yakuza Clan but someone wants her dead. Battles with Ninjas, another Hotel AI with weapons systems, dark secrets seem to be hidden by all of the major characters. This film has a real Blade Runner look to it and is quite violent even if it's only animated characters being butchered. An original story with the screenplay written by Dai Soto and Tsukasa Kondo. Director Jó Nakajima delivers a satisfying Noir Science Fiction thriller. 8/10. On Netflix.
