Urine As a Therapy to Ailments

A ZIMBABWEAN colleague based in South Africa called me early this year and vowed that none of her relations and friends would die from chronic ailments as she had discovered a natural therapy for those conditions.

"I have realised that urine is actually an effective therapy to some of these ailments and, believe me, I have also found that a good number of South Africans that are on that therapy as well. I have been taking a glass full every morning for nearly three months now and the results have been amazing," said the woman who said athlete's foot that had tormented her for so many years had been completely healed.

I was horrified and disgusted. Imagine the terrible ammonia smell of urine soaked blankets from the children's bedroom?

What of the strong stench of urine from the men's urinary?

Urine is a waste product and how then can it be healthy to drink?

"I no longer have the constant cough from chronic bronchitis I used to have and skin infections that were asthma related. I will come and demonstrate to all of you that urine is not harmful when ingested. The results are just tremendous," said the 44-year-old woman.

She has since sent me a book and website addresses on the Internet and it was interesting to note that there had been many conferences held in the past, the latest being the World Urine Conference held in Germany.

The Golden Fountain, is a complete guide to urine therapy written by Coen van der Kroon, an international authority, writer and broadcaster on the subject who now runs his own urine therapy counseling service in Amsterdam.

The book has documented interesting research based on interviews and testimonies by patients who have experienced relief and healing from many different ailments. The book has also documented testimonies by doctors that have prescribed this therapy to their patients with overwhelming success.

Urine therapy, according to the book, has proven effective in the management of immunity-related diseases like cancer allergies and even Aids.

"In 1998 I myself had cancer in the bowel, liver and lymph system. For the cancer in the bowel I had three operations within three months, after which I was only skin and bone. For the liver and lymph glands I was offered chemotherapy, which I declined. All the anaesthetics, antibiotics and post-operative drugs had weakened the immune systems to rock bottom, and because of this I had already started to lose great bunches of hair.

"I had asked God in prayer, to bring me anything I needed to get well again, and the very next morning I was given by a friend a "Water Of Life" book, which in medical terms is uropathy or urine therapy, written by J.W. Armstrong. Such is God's immediate response," says Ms TA of Australia.

"I had been suffering from migraine headaches for 20 years. Because I also suffered from rheumatoid arthritis, I was often taking pain-killers. Then I started drinking my urine. A few moths later, my arthritis disappeared and so did my headaches," says Ms BA of England.

"For a long time I have been suffering from strong hay fever attacks. Among the symptoms are itching and swollen eyes, asthmatic conditions and constant sneezing.

"I started to clean my eyes every morning with some cotton wool soaked in urine. From that moment on, the itching and swelling of the eyes disappeared, the sneezing stopped and the asthma attacks have become bearable," says Ms EC of the Netherlands.

"I was regularly suffering from sun allergy. Since I heard about urine therapy, I just rub my urine on the affected skin parts and usually the allergy rapidly disappears and the skin stops itching," says Mr LC of Germany.

"I am a PWA (person with Aids) and have been doing urine therapy for three months. My fatigue and dizziness dissipated within the first month. I experienced intense eye itchiness. A few drops of fresh urine stopped it immediately. If I forgot to take the urine one day I will pay for it with fatigue. Also my lymph gland swelling is reduced by 50 percent," said Mr B of the United States.

"I have been doing urine therapy for four months now. I am a PWA. My only symptom was a low T-cell count. My last test showed my t-cell count went up from 285 to 489," says Mr L also of the United States.

"Mr S: The patient was HIV positive and was suffering from several Aids-related symptoms, such as oral and anal fungus infections, tiredness, red and itching eyes, difficulties to get moving. Subjectively the patient felt healthy again after practising urine therapy for several months, there was no longer any evidence of the presence of the Aids virus in his blood. Without any problems the patient returned to a heavy work schedule, he had the same amount of energy and vitality as he used to have to do his work," reveals a case history from the Swiss Dr.med.U.E. Hastler which, Van der Kroon mentions with the greatest caution.

He has, however, said he had heard about similar positive experiences with urine therapy in the US.

A Mr EJP from the Netherlands had this to say about urine therapy: "I think we can also expect a lot from this method in the fight against Aids. I have seen Aids patients start urine therapy in spite of such trying circumstances, and these experiences are certainly encouraging. Two years ago, a friend of mine was examined for a stomach ulcer and was diagnosed as having full-blown Aids (she had T4 of 80; according to her doctors she had three to six months to live) She reacted badly to AZT and could not tolerate other medication.

"Two to four months after starting urine therapy, the spots on her skin disappeared including the Candida fungus which had turned her throat entirely white.

"Her energy returned, probably due to urine therapy combined with a healthy combination of plant-based remedies which strengthened her resistance. Now more than two years later, she is entirely capable of maintaining her household and caring for her child. These last two years have certainly not been easy, partly due to the fact that without AZT, and considering her general condition, she would not live longer than six months."

These are just some of the many testimonies included in the book that may serve to convince the "doubting Thomases" about the healing effects of urine therapy.

Urine therapy is the most primitive, original and one of the simplest forms of homoeopathy or isopathy and although this natural healing is still widely used in India, it is by no means a uniquely Eastern tradition.

In fact, the use of urine as medicine in one form or another can be found in many medical traditions of indigenous peoples or tribes who are still in close contact with nature.

Gypsies and Eskimos still use urine therapy as medicine. Eskimo women, in particular, use urine as shampoo; it gives hair extra body and a beautiful shine.

Also many people in Western Europe and America are familiar with the use of urine in treating warts, chilblained hands and feet, and as a disinfectant for minor wounds.

The use of urine is also rooted in the European tradition.

Doctors in ancient Greece reportedly used urine for healing wounds.

But with the erosion of age-old cultural practices and the advent of technology, humanity has tended to stray further and further from nature.

"Our interest in natural medicines, including urine therapy, has therefore decreased. Furthermore, in many respects, we have turned away from our own bodies, making urine therapy psychologically inaccessible to us; in other words we think our own body products are disgusting," says the book.

Urine is free and always available for those who need it. In a world in which money talks, urine therapy can appear to be threatening to those who earn their living by manufacturing or prescribing medicine.

"In short, urine therapy does not fit in the current economic picture of scarcity. Many people believe we are healthier nowadays thanks to advances in medical science. This is partly true. The flip side of the coin is that we have had to give up a great deal of freedom and independence.

"The enormous efforts of medical science are partly based upon the failure to really cure illnesses. Fighting symptoms is considered to be crucial, but this does not take care of the cause. Urine therapy, being a real nature cure, not only reduces the symptoms, but also deals with the cause of the illness," the book says.

Van der Kroon, however, cautions that urine therapy is not a "wonder drug" that relieves all symptoms.

"Illness always has several causes and is usually not only physical. Feelings, thoughts and the environment also play a role. If you apply urine therapy in order to get rid of a symptom, but after improvement continue to treat yourself and your body carelessly, the symptoms might reappear.

"It is, therefore, important to also pay attention to other factors playing a role in the healing process."

According to the book, in theory, urine therapy is effective for every illness and a diagnosis is not necessary prior to applying urine therapy.

This therapy is a total treatment aimed at strengthening or recovering balance in the body.

Because there are countless ways in which the balance can be upset, there are also countless illnesses.

"Medical science has conveniently categorised and named these illnesses. Urine therapy is a very personal treatment and can be applied in many ways.

"Likewise, an imbalance in the body can occur in countless ways and on different levels. Because the application does require medication which goes with a certain symptom, a diagnosis is not necessary," says the book.

"Nevertheless we are so accustomed to receiving diagnosis, it is for most of us reassuring to know which 'label' is attached to our illness."

Former Indian prime minister Morarji Desai for years spoke about the miraculous therapy that kept him fit and healthy in spite of his advanced age and lived to reach a century.

When Van der Kroon visited him in 1993 Desai was 99 years old and was still in good health. He drank a glass of urine daily and washed himself with it. He says his skin was remarkably radiant and soft.

"Nowadays the taboos surrounding bodily excretions are great. We consider many things to be dirty as soon as they leave the body, and forget that those same substances just a few minutes ago were an integral part of the body.

"The majority of useful, vital substances are found in the morning urine. The odour of urine is much less repulsive than most people think since most associate urine with public toilets," he says.

Van der Kroon was as sceptical as any Westerner would be when he was first persuaded to try urine therapy while staying in an Indian ashram (small monastery).

He had cut his foot badly but applying conventional antiseptics had had no effect. When, in desperation, he followed local advice and wrapped his foot in a cloth soaked with his own urine, the wound began to heal completely within days.

This experience prompted him to embark on a long journey around the world to research urine's history, uses and efficacy.

The Golden Fountain, the most complete book to date on urine therapy, is the result of those investigations.

The author tackles the subject with sensitivity and conviction. He provides valuable research details, together with detailed case histories and a user friendly guide to urine therapy's practical application in relation to specific ailments.

One thing that everyone agrees upon, of course, is that it is absolutely free.

"This is information pharmaceutical companies would not want to hear of because they are in business and would like to rake as much profit from drugs, particularly in these years of the deadly HIV pandemic. Urine therapy is well worth giving a try," said the ecstatic Zimbabwean colleague based in South Africa.

Professor Gordon Chavunduka, president of the Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers' Association (Zinatha) admitted that urine was frequently used as medicine but was not conversant on its application.

"Urine does have medicinal properties that are healthy for the body," he said.

Zinatha acting manager Mr Hezekias Bhebhe said urine could also be used to diffuse witchcraft by squirting the liquid on the juju or muti. It is also used to cast off witchcraft-induced spells.

In Zimbabwe, urine has traditionally been used to relieve minor burns. A man or boy would be asked to pee onto the affected area and in the majority of cases there was no need for medical attention from a health institution.

"Urine can also be ingested by a person who would have taken poison. It neutralises that poison. If you put droplets of urine in the ear of an unconscious man, he will regain consciousness.

"Urine is definitely something we prescribe on a regular basis," Mr Bhebhe said.

The Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr David Parirenyatwa, said in a telephone interview that he had heard about urine therapy but would rather stick to the traditional type of treatment, be it be traditional or homeopathy.

"It is still being researched and has not yet received acceptance and use. It is something we would be sceptical about because urine is full of urea, a result from excretion of waste from the kidneys and washed out through the bladder," he said.

However, research in many countries has proven the nutritional value of urine due to its high level of proteins, hormones, minerals, minerals and other valuable substances. These are easily assimilated and recycled by the body without any loss of energy, says the book.

"Urine contains immunologically active substances which fight viral and bacterial infections and boost the immunologically weak, as in the case with Aids, cancer, or any debilitating illness.

"Urine is a powerful cleansing agent which detoxifies and eliminates all poisonous elements."

So does anyone here enjoy a drop of their own water?

Does this really work or are they taking the piss?

Someone had to say it but its the cloakroom for me.

one urine remedy i think the article missed was jellyfish stings. it's a fairly well-known one, thanks especially to being featured on US t show Friends - where it worked, which apparently it doesn't in reality! ...

Discussion of urine as a treatment for jellyfish stings has been moved to:

ER;H!!!

I liked the mug shots of Ozzy Ozzbourn taken by the police.

I've drank urine in the past - its called Fosters.:D

Gandhi he was supposed to have drunk a cup, (of his own), a day or is this a UL?

Would'nt fancy kissing anyone after they had necked that bevarge:cross eye

:cross eye :( I think I'd rather be sick or dead than to drink, or play with, urine.

In ye olde days spin bowling cricketers would soak their hands in their own urine in order to toughen up the skin.

It was cheaper and more readily available than surgical spirits (which replaced piss as the skin toughener).

Another urine related tale involves an old man that my father knew who grew the largest runner beans ever encountered.

My Dad asked him the secret of his success - and it was that he emptied his chamber pot on the runner beans each morning.

Lovely.

Cameroon threatens to jail urine drinkers

A dramatic surge in the popularity of "urine therapy" in Cameroon has prompted the government to ban its consumption and threaten persistent offenders with jail.

The health minister acted last week after a book about "urinotherapy", published in Switzerland, entered the best-seller list in Cameroon, prompting enthusiastic experimentation by readers.

One newspaper hailed urinotherapy as a universal cure-all which could tackle scores of afflictions, including cancer, snakebites and infertility. Testimonials to the benefits of urine consumption dominated radio phone-ins and the letters pages of newspapers.

"I had haemorrhoids for five years and nothing gave me relief. But six months ago, I started drinking half a glass of my urine every morning and I am practically healed," a shopkeeper from the capital Yaounde wrote to Le Messager newspaper. A magistrate claimed: "For several years I haven't had a hair on my head, but since I started drinking my urine it's started growing again - it's extraordinary."

Omer Otabela telephoned a radio station with the story of his 80-year-old grandmother. "When she was bitten by a snake in the fields, she drank her own urine. This slowed down the progress of the venom to her heart until she got to hospital," he declared.

Urinotherapy is practically as old as man himself. About 95 per cent of urine is water, 2.5 per cent is urea and 2.5 per cent is a mix of minerals, salt, hormones and enzymes. Some practitioners believe that when rubbed on the skin or drunk, it can purify blood and tissues, and provide nutrients.

DHEA, a hormone found in large quantities in urine, is also believed to have anti-ageing, anti-cancer and anti-obesity properties.

The Chinese have treated themselves with urine both externally and internally for centuries; a more recent advocate, the British actress Sarah Miles swears by its health-enhancing properties.

During the First World War, doctors dosed patients with urine to ward off gangrene. Morarji Desai, the Indian prime minister from 1977 to 1979 who lived to the age of 99, drank a pint of his own urine every day.

No independent research has been carried out into urine drinking. But kidney specialists warn that consuming large volumes may cause a build-up of toxic waste similar to that seen in patients who suffer kidney failure.

"Given the risks of toxicity associated with ingesting urine," wrote Urbain Olanguena Awono, Cameroon's health minister, "the health ministry advises against the consumption of urine and invites those who promote the practice to cease doing so or risk prosecution."

Last night The Sunday Telegraph contacted Dr Christian Tal Schaller, whose book, Amaroli 2, started the health craze in Cameroon, to inform him of the ban.

"What a crazy thing to do," Dr Schaller said from his home in France. "I have had hundreds of letters from followers in Cameroon whose lives have been changed by urine therapy. I will contact the government to explain what this therapy can do."

A piss soaked cloth was used in the trenches to combat mustard gas attacks (I think it was mustard gas) when the soldiers couldn't get their gasmasks for whatever reason. (Or so I was lead to believe in school history lessons)

My dad reckoned he used to piss on his army boots to help shine them up. They also (apparently) used to piss on each others feet to help prevent blisters. Makes you wonder....

My old dad reckoned it was good for chilblains. But I never tried it, I had enough chilblains.

It's supposed to clear up acney, wash your face in it first thing in the morning, leave for an hour then rinse, pesonaly, I think I'd rather keep the zits.

Scientists Devise Novel Way to Rehydrate Foods
Wed 21 July, 2004 19:06

LONDON (Reuters) - Hungry soldiers with limited water supplies and only dried food rations to eat could soon be using dirty swamp water or even urine to hydrate their food, a science magazine said on Wednesday.

In a new technique, the dried rations are packed in a pouch with a special filter that removes 99.9 percent of the bacteria and toxic chemicals from whatever liquid is used.

"The pouch -- containing chicken and rice initially -- relies on osmosis to filter the water or urine," according to New Scientist magazine.

The rations were developed by scientists at the US Army Soldier Systems Center in Nantick, Massachusetts, who two years ago developed an indestructible sandwich that stayed edible for up to three years.

Their aim is to reduce the amount of water soldiers need to carry. To hydrate the food, a soldier pours liquid on one end of the foil sachet. It seeps through the pouch and a membrane into the food.

But researchers at Hydration Technology of Albany, Oregon, which makes the membrane, said soldiers should only use urine in an emergency because the membrane does not filter out urea, a compound contained in urine.

Although it is not initially dangerous, the company said rehydrating food this way over the long term could cause kidney damage.

Apparently drinking your own piss when dieing in a desert has a counterproductive effect (can't remember why - I think it's diuretic) and speeds up your chances of dieing.

It's probably related to the salt and acid content. It could dry out your mouth, and make you more thirsty.

I don't know about it being a diuretic, but it's possible.

My grandfather used to tell us that animal urine was good for your boots.

He said that he once saved a mug full of the stuff to moisten his own sandals with.

Funnily enough, about a week ago, a cat pissed all over my little brother's baseball cleats.

Mom's boyfriend told us to steep them in river water to remove the smell --Maine is full of these remedies...mm...

Urea breaks down to ammonia after a few days at room temp. Ammonia is very good as a cleaner and de-greaser. It would clean fresh fleeces very well. The fleeces can't be dyed until they are free or mostly free of lanolin.

Cup of urine a day keeps ailments at bay

Thu Sep 2,11:11 AM ET Add Offbeat - AFP to My Yahoo!

BANGKOK (AFP) - Drinking urine can eliminate sinus trouble, turn grey hair black and even cure cancer, a Thai academic said, citing a study of local Buddhists who engage in the unorthodox practice.

Ratree Cheepudomwit, of the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Development Department, said hundreds of urine drinkers attested that consuming a daily cup worked wonders for their overall health and helped slow the ageing process.

She said that in June she queried 250 members of Santi Asoke, a strict indigenous Buddhist movement believed to have thousands of followers, and 204 respondents said they had learned from ancient Buddhist manucripts that drinking one's urine improved health.

"Of the respondents, 87 percent confirmed that it had head-to-toe benefits for them, including for example reduction of dandruff, grey hair, sinus problems and cancer," Ratree told AFP.

The medical elixir was not easy on everyone's system, as about one in 10 urine drinkers suffered diarrhea afterwards, but the practice should not be viewed with disgust, she said.

"Other groups of people who drank urine were Buddhist monks who practised in accordance to scriptures which are more than 2,500 years old," she said.
