An Unsettled Murder In Nanjing & A Discussion After 12 Years

Personally, China is becoming increasingly free in recent 10 years but the policy regarding news remains conservative. In China, the government and police usually state that all murder cases must be solved completely. Even so, we could read some unsolved cases in public newspapers while the authority acquiesced in them. Among them, a famous and long-lasting case is a murder in Nanjing University. Even down to today, the culprit remains unknown.

In the year 1996, the victim, a girl named Diao Aiqing, enrolled in Nanjing University. Three months after the inception, a roommate of Miss Diao used electronic equipment without permission, and this action breached the rule of the university. Miss Diao was criticized accordingly because she was the leader of this room. At the night of 10 Oct 1996, probably to get rid of the unhappiness, Miss Diao went out to have a walk while she disappeared evermore. Miss Diao's classmates and the university had searched for her all the time but failed.

Around 10 days later, in the morning of 19 Oct, a cleaner found a bag on the street. The cleaner opened the bag and found some meat inside. At first, the cleaner did not know what exactly it was but washed the meat. However, she found three fingers when she was washing the meat. That was so creepy and the cleaner called the police immediately. The police came instantly and found other two bags around that street. After an investigation, the police counted over 2,000 pieces of meat from the three bags. Even though the police spared no effort to solve this case even today but there seems not any decisive clue until now.

Surprisingly, in 2008, a man named “Black Mass” posted a thread in a famous forum. The name of the thread mentioned this case, and Black Mass intensively discussed the culprit's motivation, body feature and other details. For example, Black Mass supposed that the culprit was an owner of smuggled CDs. Exactly, Black Mass presumed that Miss Diao had encountered the culprit that night. At that point, the culprit introduced some western music to Miss Diao, and Miss Diao was so interested in them. So the culprit invited Miss Diao to his place, and Miss Diao was killed there. All the description in the thread looked professional and calm. A few days later, another user analysed the thread by Black Mass and suggested that Black Mass was probably the hidden culprit.

You can imagine, such breaking news must draw everyone's attention quickly, and the police also started to investigate Black Mass. According to Phoenix Monthly, a journal in Hong Kong and is believed rather reliable, Black Mass was born in 1982 and his father was a policeman. At the same time, Black Mass's thread was removed, and the chief editor of that forum demonstrated that the reasons behind this were difficult to explain.

An interesting and disturbing case to be sure, thank you for posting, 王泥喜法介

Dear James, could you introduce that story in Hong Kong for us. Four dead people ordered take-away and played Mahjong. Probably you have heard that story. I attempt to write that, but my English seems too weak to convey it.
I don't think I know this story!

All right. Perhaps I made a mistake.
Is it this one?

In 1953, a take-out shop was delivering food, however, the delivery drivers would come back with one order being paid with “ghost money.” In Hong Kong, when people die the family and friends burn fake money in honour of the deceased, and it was this money that was found by the owner when reconciling the till at night.

It happened on three occasions, the owner had warned the delivery drivers the first time, and everyone was certain they were bringing back real money. The owner started checking the delivery drivers as they returned to the shop. This helped them narrow down the house that was giving them the ghost money.

In talking to the person doing the delivery, they said, one of the houses they were told to leave the food on the porch and the money was pushed under the door. And because of that the delivery checked the money extra carefully, however, believed the money was kosher.

A lady across the street was being kept awake by the same unit playing mahjong at all hours of the night. She called the police. Who went to investigate, however, nobody answered the door. It was only when they received the call about the fraud did they go and enter the property that nobody had answered the door, the previous times they went.

The police found four bodies seated around the table. It was determined they had been dead for three days. But the food in their stomachs was 12 hours old.

Very sad story. I am so sorry for Miss Diao and her family who may never know what happened to her. What if the cleaner had not seen the fingers? It sounds like she was planning to eat the meat. Horrible.

Though if "Black Mass" was born in 1982, he would only be 14 when Miss Diao was murdered. Of course a 14 year old boy can commit murder but cutting up the body like that must be very difficult. Where/how does a 14 year old boy do this?

(Having just finished the article James posted, it comes to the same conclusion)

Thank you for your attention. In fact, even though Chinese government seems to permit the discussion of this case, many constructive threads would be removed quickly. Perhaps this case looks like the case of Lan Ke'er. Even though the police presented the video at last, we could see that one was not complete because a few minutes in this video were missing.
