From Ananova:

'A duckling born with four legs in Russia has drowned after its first attempt at swimming ended in disaster.

The four-legged duck hatched at a farm in the Chelyabinsk region of Russia earlier this summer.

Farmer Amambai Abdulin said it was fine when running around the poultry yard with the other ducks.

But when it visited a nearby pond with its siblings and mother for the first time, disaster struck.

The Bashinform news agency reports the duckling paradoxically turned out to be a bad swimmer and drowned.'

Awwww, bless!

Incidentally, why do little ducks walk softly?

Cos they can't walk, hardly (especially with 4 legs!!)

When I was a kid we had a 3 legged Guinea Fowl (called, obviously for all you Rolf Harris fans, Jake :)) But he didn't survive more than a few days/weeks. I think the positioning of the extra limb must have displaced his internal systems somewhat because, as far as I remember, he didn't die of anything, just keeled over.

I remember reading years ago about a man who was born with an extra leg, fully functional too. It was part of an undeveloped twin. Maybe that's the case with these animals with extra limbs?

4 legged chicken

A four-legged chicken from Saudi Arabia

A unique mutant chicken from Saudi Arabia uses two legs to walk and four v to run.

Owners of the chicken farm in Damman carefully protect the chicken, as they understand that they may profit by it. Potential clients attack Afnan Poultry Farm in an attempt to buy the chicken. One of them offers to pay $5,500 for the 40-day bird.

Deputy Director of the farm says, he has never seen a bird with four legs. In his words, one trader from Riyad has offered to pay 25,000 rials for the bird.

But the deputy director thinks, it is necessary to wait for some time, because he thinks that more four-legged chicken will appear in the farm.

Now the farm-s owners try to contact different research centers of the world for examining of the mutant chicken

Why is there never a pic to go with these articles?

Looks real to me. Would be pretty complicated to fake. Its not like the leg is sticking out underneath, if faked, it would require some artistry.

I've seen a real (stuffed) six-legged cow before, so no reason this has to be fake.

Eeewww freaky. I guess it's possible it's part of an undeveloped twin. I'm sure I read somewhere that it happened with a huiman once that he was born with an extra limb.
And no, he wasn't called Jake the Peg before you ask!

Is it real? It's a mooooooo-t point.

RALEIGH -- When Liz Bell saw the small, shivering dog in her friend's front yard, she thought it had been hit by a car. Its back left leg was curled under. It had a pronounced limp.
But when a veterinarian at an emergency clinic got a closer look, she found something much more serious. The dog had too many legs.

The dog, a female Maltese and terrier mix, is between 9 months and 1 year old. Veterinarians say it is extremely rare for an animal with such a serious deformity to survive into adulthood.

Three-Eyed, Double-Mouthed Calf In Good Health
Newborn's Extra Parts Reportedly Work
POSTED: 12:19 p.m. EDT April 21, 2004
UPDATED: 12:20 p.m. EDT April 21, 2004

GRAND SALINE, Texas -- A calf born in an east Texas town, about 60 miles east of Dallas, is thriving despite its two mouths and three eyes.

According to owner Virginia Hale, the light red female calf "Unique" was born in a pasture on April 12.

Hale said the 57-pound calf is friendly, likes to drink milk from its mother and enjoys lapping up water by using both tongues.

The animal's extra mouth is on the lower left side of her face and her third eye, which blinks, is above the extra mouth.

Hale took Unique to a veterinarian Monday to be checked for a runny nose.

During that visit, the vet gave the calf a shot of antibiotics and said the animal is otherwise healthy, Hale said.

Two-headed lamb born in China

Greets

and now for something completely different ...

a lamb with two heads

Ananova:

A two-headed lamb has been born in China.

This two-headed lamb was born on a farm in Yantai city, China /Freelance

Farmer Han Dianrong, 74, of Yantai city, Shangdong province, said he had never seen anything like it.

The lamb, one of four born to the same ewe, has four eyes and two mouths.

Mr Dianrong says both heads bleat together when the lamb sees people approaching.

The weight of two heads is too much for the lamb's neck so it has to be fed by bottle.

And a two faced kitten:

Kitten Born With Two Faces

UPDATED: 10:11 am EST March 10, 2005

LAKE CITY, Fla. -- When Teresa Morrison's cat had a litter Tuesday, she noticed something was different about one of the kittens.

Two face cat"I thought it had growth on its face," she said.

The kitten has two mouths, two noses and four eyes. She immediately called her veterinarian.

"He said he's never seen it. Never," Morrison said.

The kitten is nursing from its mother, which the vet said is a good sign.

"(She's) feeding off one mouth now; sometimes go to the other one, but he's not getting it open," Morrison said.

The vet told Morrison he didn't know if the cat has one or two brains, but having one would give the cat a better chance to survive.

He said if the kitten lives 48 hours, he has a good chance of living a full life.

Wednesday morning, Morrison named the cat "Deuce."

Man finds two-headed snake in garden

A Chinese man who found a two-headed snake at his home is raising it as his pet.

The two-headed snake

The man, called Yang, discovered the unusual reptile in a discarded bag in his yard in Zhenyang town, Henan province.

He has decided to raise the snake in a washbasin in his family home.

Both the two heads are well-developed, and each have eyes and a mouth.

The snake, bearing red and black rings, is more than half a metre long, and as thick as an adult's thumb.

Yang says the snake has a very good appetite for mice.

An expert from the local forestry department believes the abnormal wild snake was formed by environmental effects during gestation, reports Jinbao Daily.

Kitten born with two faces, otherwise healthy
AP Photo ORROS101

ROSEBURG, Oregon (AP) — A newborn kitten recently entered the world with two faces and, hopefully, at least nine lives.
Gemini was born Sunday with two mouths, two tongues, two noses and four eyes.
"I kind of feel sorry for her, because I can't know for a fact if she's going to live or die," its owner, Lee Bluetear, told the (Roseburg) News-Review. "If she makes it, she should be a perfectly normal and healthy cat. Other than having two faces."
Roseburg veterinarian Alan Ross, who examined the kitten on Tuesday, said he can't estimate the kitten's life span. He said when he first saw the kitten, he wouldn't have given her more than a 10 percent chance of survival.
"With the three of our veterinarians here, we have a combined total of 50 years of experience," Ross said. "We have never seen anything like this."
Bluetear has been breeding different kinds of animals, starting with dogs, since 1980. Roughly three years ago, she discovered a litter of smaller than normal kittens she calls "miniature cats."
Gemini was born to a miniature mother and a full-size father.
"Everybody is totally amazed that this thing exists," Bluetear said.

Six-Legged Puppy Found in Malaysia

Sun Jun 19, 4:25 AM ET

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - A puppy with six legs and two penises was found sleeping outside a Chinese temple in a Malaysian town, and devotees are treating the freak find as a good omen, a news report said Sunday.

The furry puppy with brown patches was sleeping at the temple entrance on Thursday morning when it was spotted by a temple caretaker, said the Star newspaper, which published the animal's picture clearly showing the extra two legs and the additional organ.

"He (the caretaker) lifted the canine to place it elsewhere and was shocked to see that the puppy had six legs," the Star quoted the Kwang Sung Temple committee member Tee Kim Huat as saying. The temple is in Pandamaran town, south of Kuala Lumpur near Port Klang.

The puppy, believed to have been left there by someone, is being cared for by the temple committee, Tee said. He said devotees feel that the unusual dog is a bearer of good fortune and have named him Ong Fatt, or the Lucky One.

The temple committee has obtained a dog-rearing permit from the Klang Municipal Council to keep the puppy as a pet.

Not quite Spiderlamb, but ...

March 20, 2006 - 12:37PM

A lamb with six legs, four in front and two at the back, has been born on a farm in Belgium, the news agency Belga reported today.

The lamb cannot walk and has to be specially fed.

A veterinary surgeon who examined it was reported as saying he would consider amputating the two superfluous legs to give the animal a normal existence if it managed to survive beyond a week.

Unique-looking dog seeks new home

Forget the old joke which starts 'my dog has got no nose...' - Duo the Staffordshire bull terrier has two.

Staff at Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter are having problems finding a home for the three-year-old because of his unique appearance caused by a harelip.

The dog, named Duo by shelter staff, was handed in to them by police after apparently being lost or abandoned.

Staff at the shelter said vets had not seen a harelip to such an extent in a dog before.

Head of fundraising Michelle Pyle said: "We've had a few people come and see him and say he's a freak.

"Duo is not a freak, he's just unusual. Not many people can say they've got a dog like that."

Dog with 'two noses' and no home

A dog that appears to have two noses because of a condition similar to a harelip in humans is looking for a new home. And now this amazing find:

Two-headed beast from 100m BC

Mark Henderson, Science Editor

# 'Miracle' survival of fossil specimen
# Mutations gave rise to legend

A miniature two-headed creature from the age of the dinosaurs has been discovered in China, astonishing scientists who never imagined that so rare a mutant could be preserved for 100 million years.

The skeleton of a young aquatic reptile, known as Sinohydrosaurus lingyuanensis, is the first fossil ever unearthed which has two heads and necks, showing that a developmental abnormality seen in modern snakes, turtles, lizards and crocodiles also afflicted their ancient forebears.

The find is remarkable because it is extremely rare for any dead animal to be preserved as a fossil: the vast majority decompose without leaving a trace of their existence.

For a specimen as rare as a mutant with two heads to survive defies the laws of probability, scientists said.

The two-headed creature measures only 7 centimetres (2.75in) from heads to tail, indicating that it must have died in infancy or while still a foetus. Had it lived to adulthood, it would have grown to 1 metre (3.3ft) in length.

The extraordinary creature seems to have suffered from a malformation known as axial bifurcation, which leads to the development of a duplicate head and neck on a single body.

It is well-known among modern reptiles and was first reported by Aristotle. About 400 cases of two-headed snakes are known to science and it has also been noted in crocodiles, lizards and turtles.

Two-headed reptiles rarely survive in the wild — the heads have independent brains and tend to fight over food — but snakes and turtles with the condition have been known to live for several years in captivity.

One of the most famous examples is a two-headed albino black rat snake, known as “We”, which is kept at the City Museum in St Louis, Missouri. We was born in 1999 and put up for sale by the museum, on eBay, earlier this year. It attracted no worthwhile bidders. The snake is now sponsored by a Florida biotech company that uses snake venom to develop new drugs.

A two-headed turtle has also survived at the Natural History Museum, Geneva, for 10 years. Similar two-headed creatures are thought to have inspired many of the monsters of ancient legend.

The Hydra was a water serpent with nine heads, each of which would grow back if cut off. It was eventually killed by Hercules during one of his twelve labours. Cerberus was a three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to the Underworld.

The fossilised two-headed reptile was discovered in the Yixian formation of northeastern China, which has yielded many of the most remarkable dinosaur finds of recent years.

Scientists have ruled out any possibility that the specimen is a fake and details of the discovery are published today in the journal Biology Letters.

“This two-headed reptile seems to be unique in the fossil record,” said Eric Buffetaut of the French National Centre for Scientific Research, who led the study team.

“This simply isn’t something you would expect to find. It is rare enough for anything to fossilise, and cases like this are unusual even among modern animals. The chances of finding a fossil like this are almost impossibly small.”

Mutant Myths

# Cerberus The mythological three-headed dog that guarded the entrance to Hades, the underworld, in Greek and Roman myth. Subdued and captured by Hercules as one of his 12 labours

# The Hydra Water beast with many serpent heads. When one was cut off, two would grow back. Killed by Hercules, who solved the problem by burning each neck stump after severing each head

# Maya two-headed monster Double-headed dragon used often in Maya art and culture. It is thought to signify the power of the Earth and natural disasters

# Ghidorah or Ghidrah Three-headed monster from Japanese film, defeated by Godzilla

# Fluffy A modern variation on Cerberus: a three-headed dog kept by Hagrid to guard the Philosopher’s Stone in the first Harry Potter novel and film

Calf Born With Two Faces

Calf born with two faces

Associated Press
Jan. 4, 2007 10:24 AM

RURAL RETREAT, Va. - It sounds like something out of a supermarket tabloid, but there really is a calf with two faces at a Virginia farm..

It was born late last month, and according to the farmer it breathes out of two noses, and has two tongues that move independently. There also appears to be a single socket containing two eyes where the heads split.

The calf has just one mouth but two lower jaws, and is fed through a tube. The farmer, who calls it the craziest thing he's ever seen, says the animal is healthy.

She was the product of artificial insemination, which was supposed to create a genetically superior specimen.
