German shepherd dog set to be nine inches tall

A gardener is bringing up one of the smallest German shepherd dogs in the world.

Eight-week-old Kricket currently measures eight inches from floor to his shoulder.

His owners, gardener Mary Higgins, 53, and her husband, Andy, 58, of Gorefield near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, say he will grow just one more inch.

Kricket - who is less than a third of the size of a normal German shepherd suffers from a rare genetic disease and is thought to be one of a handful of dogs with the condition.

"Normally dogs born with this dwarfism are destroyed by the breeder," said Mr Higgins, who is disabled and unemployed.

"We got Kricket from a breeder who didn't want to destroy him. We have 17 rescue dogs at our home and he just runs around with them.

"We estimate that he will grow to about nine inches and weigh about 8lbs. That will be less than a third the size of a normal German shepherd.

"He doesn't eat as much as the other dogs because he's so small, but apart from that he just runs around normally.

"We've spoken to a geneticist who tells us dogs with this condition also only live for an average of four to five years rather than the normal 12 to 13," he said.

I'd love to see a picture - I'll have to hunt one out in a bit.

Makes you wonder how many "imperfect" pedigree (ie not mongrel) dogs have been destroyed by disgruntled breeders ... good on that man for taking the dog on regardless!!

Many awws were had in my halls earlier.

This thread is being established for discussions of dwarfism in animals - the growth / developmental disorder. 'Dwarf species' are animals that are small when 'normal'.

What could be a better example of animal dwarfism than a dwarf specimen of an animal renowned for height - i.e., a giraffe?

Dwarf Giraffes Discovery Surprises Scientists

Like someone put a giraffe’s head and neck on a horse’s body.

With an average height of roughly 16 feet, giraffes are the tallest mammals on Earth. At about 6 feet long, their lanky legs and towering necks stand taller than most humans. Even the shortest giraffe is twice as tall as the average professional basketball player.

So when Michael Brown, a conservation science fellow with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, and colleagues came across a Nubian giraffe in Uganda’s Murchison Falls National Park in 2015 that was just 9 feet, 4 inches tall, they did a double-take. ...

The neck on the giraffe — nicknamed Gimli — was characteristically long, but its legs weren’t. It looked like someone had put a giraffe’s head and neck on a horse’s body.

Then, just three years later, an 8-1/2-foot-tall Angolan giraffe — nicknamed Nigel — was found living on a private farm in central Namibia. After measuring and analyzing the dimensions of the two giraffes, the researchers could come up with only one explanation: dwarfism.

The condition, also known as skeletal dysplasia, affects bone growth, often resulting in short stature. Although it has been known to occur in humans and domestic animals like dogs, cows and pigs, dwarfism is rarely observed among wild animals and this is the first time it has been found in giraffes. ...

Awwwww, it's weirdly adorable!

THE GOOD NEWS: Guinness certified Rani as the shortest cow ever.
THE BAD NEWS: Rani passed away on 19 August.
Rani, the shortest cow ever at just 20 inches tall, passes away

Measuring 50.8 cm (20 in) in height, and weighing just 26 kg (57 lb), Rani rose to fame in July 2021 after videos and images of her stature went viral.

The two-year-old Bhutti, or Bhutanese cow, lived on a farm near Dhaka, Bangladesh. ...

Bhutti cows are prized for their meat, however, Rani’s owner, Kazi Sufian, quickly realised she couldn't be sold for that purpose.

Beyond being the smallest cow Kazi had ever seen, it dawned on him that Rani may be the smallest cow anyone had ever seen. ...

Kazi waited until Rani was nearly two years old before staking her claim as the shortest cow in the world. He thought it would be a great way to inform the world of this breed of cattle. ...

Sadly, the following month, on 19 August 2021, Rani passed away after suffering stomach swelling.

According to local reports, this was caused by overeating and gas accumulation in the stomach. She was rushed to receive treatment, however, the vets were unable to save her.

As unique as she was beautiful, Rani will always be remembered as the shortest, and perhaps cutest, cow ever. ...
