Animal Escapes

Vid at link.

Two of three raccoons which escaped in Sunderland have been found, but one is still on the run.

A trespasser let the animals out of their enclosure at Sunderland Training and Education Farm before Christmas, and they were spotted by people in the Pennywell area.

On Friday night, Rocket and Pinch, the two female raccoons, could not resist the temptation of hot dogs left in a crate on the farm and they were found and safely transferred to their newly-secured enclosure

But the male raccoon Meeko remains at large.

Volunteers from Raccoon Rescue UK have been looking since before Christmas using humane traps which look similar to a slimmed down dog crate, with food at one end and a trigger pad in the middle, which when pressed closes the crate door. They have used kibble, fruits, nuts and the trio’s favourite treat – hot dogs - to entice them back.

A Japanese Macaque has escaped the Highland Wildlife Park and is wandering the village of Kincraig wolfing peanuts from bird feeders. That definitely would be an unusual sighting for this weekends Big Garden Birdwatch!

The RZSS, which runs the Highland Wildlife Park, received a call to special hotline at about 10:00.

Alan Bannon, its head of communications, said it was a relief to finally capture the monkey.

He told BBC Scotland News: "We got a phone call from a member of the public saying they had spotted the animal in their garden helping himself to a bird feeder.

"We sent out our drone team and our keepers and they confirmed it was the macaque."

Mr Bannon said the monkey had been brought safely back to the park where it would be checked by vets before being given a "good feed".

An escaped kangaroo was reunited with its owners by sheriffs after it was spotted hopping around the pool area of a Florida apartment complex.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office released thermal video shot from a helicopter of the kangaroo, and audio of someone describing a "kind of large kangaroo" on the loose.

It is legal to keep kangaroos in Florida as long as they are properly registered and the owner follows stringent procedures.

Feeling a bit woof but happy to be back.

Haverfordwest missing dog found after five months in the wild

Costa, back at Greenacres Rescue Centre

Costa has survived a tough winter in the wilds of rural Pembrokeshire

A dog who was missing for five months is "happy to be back" after surviving the winter in rural Pembrokeshire.

Costa, a three-year-old Newfoundland Cross from Greenacres Rescue Centre in Haverfordwest, was being rehomed when he ran away at the end of September. Since then he has endured living in the wild, braving storms, freezing temperatures and heavy rain. It was feared he was dead, but rescuers lured him into a rescue trap using chicken broth.

Centre manager Mikey Lawler said Costa is "a bit tatty" but doing well. Nervy pup Costa was being taken to his new home when he escaped from his new owner's car, a 50 minute drive from the centre.

"He literally just vanished," said Mr Lawler. "We searched for him - staff and volunteers were going looking for him and he was being spotted occasionally, usually very early in the morning or quite late at night, but by the time we got up there he'd be gone again. This went on and on, all within a six-mile radius. Then he just disappeared completely for about a month, we didn't have any sightings at all. We really thought he'd died."

Then, last week, Drone Search and Rescue for Lost Dogs picked up Costa on their cameras.

"They left some highly concentrated chicken broth and set a trap for him," said Mr Lawler. "He went in and that was that. We're super, super grateful to them, their role was completely vital."

Costa was taken back to the centre, where he has mostly been "crashed out sleeping and relaxing, knowing he's safe". He was given a clean bill of health by vets and is now waiting for his forever home.

100 huskies run amok in China shopping centre after dog cafe door left open

A story about 100 husky dogs that escaped from a pet cafe after someone forgot to close the door has delighted mainland social media.

The beloved pets were almost lost when they rushed out of the cafe in a shopping centre in Guangdong province, southeastern China.

Staff reacted quickly and managed to round them all up.

The incident happened on March 12 when the owner visited her cafe and the huskies became very excited.

A customer then arrived but forgot to close the door, which was when the dogs made their bid for freedom.

Im not sure I want to know either. Its a worrying mental image.

Four months on the run? Rheally stretches credulity, must have had accomplices hiding him.

A large, flightless bird that made a bid for freedom by swimming across a river has been caught after more than four months on the run.

The rhea, nicknamed Chris, escaped from a farm in Diss, Norfolk, in November.

Owner Stephen Alleyne said Chris had been spotted in various locations in Suffolk and was captured in a paddock about one mile (1.6km) from his home.

"He'd made it about 25 miles away but I think he was pining for his girlfriend, DiRhea, so was coming home," he said.

A relative of the ostrich family, rheas can grow up to 5.5ft (1.7m) tall and run at speeds of 40mph (65km/h), which make them difficult to catch.

Mr Alleyne had warned would-be rhea wranglers not to approach Chris, as the birds "can kick very hard".

"He'd been spotted all over the place, but we never managed to get hold of him," he said.

Yes the sightings, jokes and complaints about this case have been filling our community fb pages. I didn't believe it at first and thought it was a big hoax. However it seems that the bird really could cover a lot of ground in one day. And yes there were one or two obviously photoshopped pics .... I mean he never actually sautered down the high street!
And yes it has been going on for four months and I'm pretty sure there were no accomplices involved!

The funny thing is, this isn't the first time a Rhea has escaped in this area. I've got an Eastern Daily Press advertising poster somewhere from a few years back that reads GIANT BIRD LOOSE IN NORTH NORFOLK. I'd asked the newsagents to save the poster for me because I liked the sci fi sounding headline.

Elephant on the loose in Montana

An elephant escaped from a circus in Montana and went for a walk around the city, closing roads and concerning locals.

Viola, an elephant at the Jordan World Circus, was spooked by a car backfiring while being washed by her handler and escaped into the town.

Local news reported that the road was briefly closed while the elephant was caught and safely returned to the circus.

Mataya Smith, who drove past as the incident unfolded, said: “[The handlers] did everything that they could to just kind of guide her. They didn’t push her, they didn’t force her, they just nicely asked her to move with them.

“They waited very patiently with her and just kind of petted her and gave her comfort and calmed her until the truck came by.”

Other witnesses said the elephant defecated on a lawn before she was caught.

Military horses running loose in central London caught by police

Pictures and videos of riderless horses in centre of UK capital shared on social media

Military horses have bolted through central London after a number of the animals got loose.
Army personnel and horses were hurt and vehicles damaged when chaos broke out on Wednesday morning. Reports indicated that up to five people had been injured.

Two horses were seen running in the road near Aldwych, one of which appeared to be covered in blood. A taxi driver waiting outside the Clermont hotel in Buckingham Palace Road had the windows of his car smashed after a spooked horse collided with the Mercedes people carrier.

A horse also crashed into a parked doubledecker tour bus, smashing the windscreen.

An army spokesperson said: “A number of military working horses became loose during routine exercise this morning. All of the horses have now been recovered and returned to camp. A number of personnel and horses have been injured and are receiving the appropriate medical attention.”

LBC radio station spoke to the driver of the Mercedes, Faraz, who was waiting outside the Clermont hotel when he felt something smash into his car. He said he saw three or four horses near the vehicle and one member of the military had been thrown off and injured.

It is thought seven horses initially got loose, with police working with the army to recapture them.

Good thing that they were caught before anyone was really seriously hurt. i'd read that it was a sudden noicse from a building site that had spooked them. Seems surprising considering they were military horses ... perhaps they were in the early stages of their training?
