Elephant on the loose spotted outside supermarket in southern Italy

An elephant could be seen stomping down a highway in Calabria, southern Italy on Thursday.

In video shared with the BBC, the animal appears to be heading towards a supermarket.

Local media reports say that the elephant escaped a local circus, and has since been returned.

The BBC contacted the police, but authorities avoided addressing the elephant in the room and were unable to confirm the story.

Wonder if it's dangerous.

A lizard rescued after escaping from its owners' home was so big it had to be kept in a dog kennel, an animal charity said.

The 3ft-long (91cm) reptile was found wandering around Castel in Guernsey at about 16:30 BST on Friday.

The Guernsey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA) said it was the biggest lizard it had ever seen on the island.

It was retrieved by its owners about five hours later, the charity said.

Whole lot of loving going on.

Brightly-coloured lovebirds have been spotted across a town after a colony was accidentally released.

The 72 birds escaped from a garden in Tadley, Hampshire, after birdkeeper Drew Holdaway, 64, left the door to one of his aviaries open.

Since they took flight on 9 August, neighbours in Burnham Road had been notifying Mr Holdaway when one of the exotic animals was spotted in the area.

Of the missing birds, 28 have returned home, but 44 are still missing.

Spraying for her safe recovery.

The owner of a missing deaf pet skunk is appealing for help to find her.

Sky, who has brown and white stripes, escaped from the back garden of her home in Purewell, Christchurch, Dorset, on Friday night.

Owner Sharon Tyler, who described seven-year-old Sky as elderly, said she was "not dangerous but will be petrified".

Ms Tyler has appealed on social media for help finding her microchipped pet but said she was struggling for information as "a lot of people think it's a prank".

Sky the skunk

Sky's owner said she would likely be curled up asleep during the day and looking for food at night

She has asked residents in the area to check their sheds and gardens and hopes someone with a thermal drone might come forward.

She said: "She'll be curled up and asleep during the day but as soon as it gets dark she'll be out looking for food."

Because Sky cannot hear and will be scared, Ms Tyler said she will probably run and could spray, although she added she had only sprayed once when she was young.

This probably comes under the 'coincidence' heading...

I just took the dog for a walk around the village. As we rounded the village green, the little terrier from the house across the way (Paddy) came barrelling up to see my dog. Along with all the other dogs in the village, he's never out on his own, so I knew he must have escaped, so Dog and I promptly went to his house, knocked on the door and returned him. I didn't want him to get hit by a car.

Then I come on here - and the Animal Escapes topic is up on the board!

a) Microchipped in order to distinguish it from all the other skunks in Dorset?

b) Why hasn’t she had it “deactivated” if she wanted it as a pet?

I met a pet skunk, that wasn't 'deactivated' either, because they only spray under certain conditions - they don't go round squirting left right and centre, and if they are pets and used to being handled they are calm and generally tame. I was told that removing the scent glands can be uncomfortable for the pet - so I'd guess that's why she hadn't been descented.

And microchipped, like any other animal, so if she's found and handed in to a vet, they can get straight in touch with her owner, rather than waiting to hear that someone has lost a skunk.

tut tut Max!

'According to the British Pest Control Association, it is legal to keep skunks as pets in the UK, however, it is illegal to have the scent glands removed.

Skunks spray to deter predators. The pungent liquid causes no real damage, but the rotten egg smell can linger for many days.'

You can buy soap and detergent to get the smell off your skin and clothes, even then you may have to bin the clothing, you can always tell when a skunk has been knocked over on the road by the stench that suddenly fills the car.

I guess because skunks aren't native to the UK, people don't really know quite what to do with one when they meet it.

The one I met was an adorable little thing, she had the cutest face!

Whenever I visit Australia, I am the one cooing over the possums and their cuteness while everyone around me growls about them getting in the roofspace.

Do we have any wild creatures in the UK that make tourists stop and stare because they have never seen them in the wild before?

Maybe the ravens at the Tower of London?

My best friend from school married an American and went over there to live. So what was it that had intrigued her most about her new country in the first few days of lving there? Yep a skunk, apparently it was living under the porch steps of her in laws house! She couldn't believe the stink it could make when alarmed. lol

I don't know, ravens live wild in most of the northern hemisphere, so they aren't that unusual. I really meant wild creatures that we have in the UK that aren't common elsewhere.

I did have someone remark on seeing a badger in the wild once, she was from Hungary. I don't know whether they don't have badgers, or whether she'd just never seen one in the wild!

You do get badger in Hungary, but as in the UK most people will only ever see one dead on the roadside.

One of my student lodgers who came over from the NT in OZ was most keen to see a hedgehog she kept her eyes open for one everywhere she went. She'd purchased a 'Brit Rail' card and didn't waste a single minute of her time here travelling all over Britain from my home in Wales, but she was never able to spot one!

A happy ending.

A deaf pet skunk that escaped from a garden has been found.
Sky went missing from her home in Purewell, Christchurch, Dorset, on Friday night.
Owner Sharon Tyler said the seven-year-old pet was spotted relaxing under a car close to her home during a search with friends and neighbours late at night on Tuesday.
The brown and white skunk was reunited with Ms Tyler after some coaxing with a piece of chicken.

Oh dear I'm not sure it's kind to keep a hedgehog indoors unless it's a rescue one she's nurturing back to health?

I see plenty of muntjac deer round here in rural Norfolk. They come right into my small market town and sometimes get run over and I've had them in my garden. They are cute but I didn't really want them eating the stuff on my veg plot. ha!ha!

My son has caught glimses of the water deer on the Broads but so far I haven't.
