Anyone Seen A Ghost?

Wwwwwwhhhhoooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaa Tyger, what a brill place to live!

I haven't been haunted for donkeys' years.......... :(

Ghosts seem to love telephones.

We still talk about what or who would have been on the other end if we'd answered it but it stopped ringing before we had the gall to pick it up. It was also in the days before 1471 so we couldn't have tried to find out if it was a genuine call from someone.

Escargot, you're a very brave lady! (With a screw loose too me thinks if you like being haunted! :) )

Hahahaha Tyger, spot on with the mad bit!

I'd have loved to be there when you & your friend were tele-haunted. I see ghostie people now & then but they don't harass me, more's the pity.

The BF gets harassed now & then (he used to work at the famously haunted Minton works in Stoke and was haunted there) but it doesn't faze him either!

At the moment I live alone except for cats & dogs and never feel remotely scared - pets are a great comfort!

I grew up in the 'Old Spot Hotel' in Gawler (South Australia) the first building built there, which was in 1839. Quite a few people have heard of this hotel, i lived in it for 11 years, strange things started to happen after we renovated it to extend the bar and create some more room.

First of all, i remember waking up on a few occasions to see a white/green fuzz of light floating along the upstairs passage.

Another time waking up at about 2am, only to see standing in a dark corner of the room a person wearing a white robe but their face was totally blacked out.

And again, after freaking out and moving rooms, waking up again at about 2am to have a woman dressed in black clothing leaning over me as if looking out of the window which was above my head although she was completley motionless.

Other than that, nearly everyone who has lived there has witnessed or heard something. My brother who was a few rooms away near the stair well virtually every night could hear people walking up and down the stairs, at times it was that annoying to him he would walk to the stairwell and yell at them to shut the hell up. It would stop for a while funnily enough, but then start again.

Other patrons of the bar had reported seeing people walk through walls and other such things.

The hotel has been featured on the news program 'A Current Affair' in 1999 or 1998, i cant really remember when it was.

I think I would like to be haunted up to a certain point. I don't think I'd like to be scared which is probably what would happen!

Nah Tyger, it's not scary.
The silly beggars can't hurt you, they're dead! :D

Hm, not too sure about that, sleepless nights are not good for your mental health.

Last week I was doing my show at a dinner, whilst the speakes where on i nipped to the toilet. as i went into the lobby I saw a men in a grey suit walk from the front door and straight into the toilet on the other side of the lobby.

The door was still swinging shut as i reached it. but the inner door was still shut. As i went into the gents I realised that there was no one in there. all the wc cubicle doors where ajar and the cubicles appeared empty.

As I went back into the Lobby, I realised that the front door was locked.

Also, as the dinner was formal, everybody was wearing black dinner suits.

Photo's from the show are covered with orbs, one of which appears to be resting on my hand and emmiting light. I am not holding anything reflective in this photo'...

Could this have been a ghost? Or Nerves?

I think I have, when I was about seven or so.

When I was 3, my Grandma died. I remember the day of her funeral as I wasn't allowed to go and was left in the care of my older cousin.

A few years later, my Mum started to work in one of the local pubs. A local girl from a couple of doors up used to babysit.

One night I was on my way back downstairs after going to the loo. The ceiling in the house we used to live in was really high, with a vertical wall going from the end of the hall ceiling to the ceiling that would have been the floor of the loft. It was so big it could have been used as a projection screen (or it seemed so to a little girl!). As I was coming downstairs I saw a big (to me) dark shadow on the portion of wall. It scared the hell out of me even though I had no idea what it was, and still don't for sure. I belted down the rest of the stairs at full speed.

A few days later I told my Mum about it. Her reply was "Don't worry, it'll be your Grandma watching you". As you can probably imagine this wasn't what I really wanted to hear and I was very nervous of going upstairs on my own for years after.

- another haunted toilet- or boggarted boghouse as an Irish acquaintance of mne would say :D

Ghosts like a. telephones and b. lavatories.

Not sure if I've posted this before, but apparently we have a poltergeist in the family!

My great great aunt was a strict, wealthy spinster who would not tolerate untidiness in her Italian mansion. She died at the grand old age of 95 and and on the night of her funeral, the family and housekeeping staff decided it had been a long enough day and left the washing up till the next morning.

According to family lore they were woken at 2am by bangs and crashes from the kitchen and the two brave individuals who garnered the courage to enter the kitchen found all the crockery smashed and food debris scattered across the room. Apparently, from that day on, no one dares go to bed in the mansion without making sure everything is immaculately tidy by bedtime, for fear of reprisal from beyond the grave.

The house is now rented out as a holiday home, but I actually visited the mansion as a child on a family visit. Whether this was just a tale they told us kids to frighten us into tidiness I don't know, but despite it being the 'off' season we were all ushered out of the house well before nightfall, to drive back to the other (presumably non-haunted) family home over 100 miles away.

just an addition to my above post about the hotel i used to live in (old spot hotel)

this is one of the many pictures that my photographer uncle managed to get out of a few hundred shots.

it has been tested by police experts, a handful of other photographic experts and it has been concluded that it is not faked.

as you can see there are three faces in this picture. Also, when viewing a higher quality version of the image (ill try to find one) you can even see the shoe of the girl in the lower left.

Not a ghost-sighting exactly but a minor weird event that isn't worth a
thread of its own.

This evening at seven thirty, I was startled by a noise on the staircase.

It turned out to be the landing light-bulb, which had removed itself from
the fitting, bounced down the stairs - 13 of them - and landed unbroken
at the bottom.

Now this is a standard bayonet-fitting bulb and had been untouched for
the last few months. It had been last used last night and worked perfectly.

I am careful when I replace light-bulbs to make sure they are properly seated
in the holders. There is no damage to the holder and there was no shaking
of the house.

I tested the bulb and it was now dead but the fitting works with a new bulb.

I know this is all rather dull but I am quite baffled by it.

Not dull at all James..well perhaps in as much as the bulb sheds no light, but please report in tomorrow and let us know that you survived the night without any more fun and games from the cosmic joker.

Yes, Pete, you're right, the story's not dull. I've a friend that's had similar things happen to her involving electrical items turning themselves on and off when not even plugged in. She calls them her 'electrical storms' and when she doesn't like what's happening, she asks whatever is causing them to stop. They usually do after a short while.

a supposed 'psychic' woman once told my friend that her flat was 'possessed by demons' and that she had to leave immediately, but she said she wasn't leaving her cats alone. A spiritual healer (I think) said she ought to ask whatever it was that was scaring her to stop doing it and explain why. Doing this worked.

She gets the 'electrical storms' every now and again, but each time asks them to stop and they do.

Well it's three thirty gone and the demons haven't shown yet, folks.

Nice thought to go to bed with though. Thanks! :p

Not really seen a ghost but I've heard a few odd things. It started when I was about 10 when my older brother (about 12) started to get scared of going to bed at night as he said he could hear the pool table in adjacent room being used. At the time I slept in the same room as my older brother (in bunk beds) and I hadn't heard anything so, understandably, I used to rip the piss about it, as you do when you're a kid.
Problem was that one night, I think it was a few weeks later, I was lying awake and started to hear what sounded like the sound of the pool balls in the other room clicking together, very distinctive, and I was so terrified that I couldn't move a muscle. Eventually the sound died down and my brother climbed out of the bunk beneath mine and I heard him going down the stairs. Then the worst part was that the clicking started back up again while he was gone, which scared me a hell of a lot. But when I heard someone coming up the stairs again the clicking stopped and my mum and brother came into the room. She was telling him that there was no noise and nothing bad was going to happen so go to sleep. He had heard the noise as well, but didn't know that I was awake to hear it.
Afterwards I talked to my brother about it and we told our mum what we had heard and I'm not sure really what she thought about it. Anyway, the clicking sounds continued for a while at nights until my mum decided to remove the pool balls from the table and put them in a pot in a different room. From then on we didn't hear the clicking again.

The thing is that whatever it was seemed to move onto other things such as snapping ring binders open and closed and pressing the keys on the keyboard (see Ghosts and Computers thread for details) that were in the same room as where we slept (there was also something with a digital watch game that freaked me out). I never actually saw them move as I was frozen in terror each time I heard the sounds (people who have experienced similar things will know what I mean). This only really stopped when I moved into a different room.

It was so long ago now that I'm actually starting to disbelieve it myself, trying to rationalize the sounds as being the house "settling" and such, even though my memory is clear that the sounds were exactly like the pool balls clicking. But I'm a sceptic to the end and part of my mind is sure there is a reasonable explaination to it all.

I remember this happening, but I now doubt it could have been a real event (can ghosts have a physical presence?)

I was about 8 years old and I was staying at my Grandparents' house; a little two-up, two down on the outskirts of Manchester, for the night. I had been upstairs in my bedroom but decided to come downstairs for something, perhaps a drink - I can't remember. As I got near to the bottom of the stairs I felt a hand grip my ankle and when I looked down there was a large, pale hand and it was around my lower leg, holding it tight. It was there for maybe a couple of seconds then it disappeared and I was able to get down the stairs. I think I jumped. I went into the front room where my Grandparents were sitting and told them about it. I don't actually remember them being surprised, but I was crying and truly terrified.

Whooaaaaaaaaaaa, Atch.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most disturbing thing about this is that not only did the apparent entity know you were there, but it was able to engage in physical contact. Very strange. I know this seems a daft question (that you'll probably want to kick me in the head for asking) but are you sure that there was no one else in the house, maybe it was dark and you couldn't see who it was?
But then your grandparents probably would have said something....
You got me stumped.

Has anyone seen a Ghost

These accounts may sound mundane but I guess it just goers to show that not all "ghost" events are scary¡Kor incredibly interesting.

My parents have got an electric kettle, it whistles when the water boils, a few days ago, my mum, dad and brother were in the living room watching the red filth (Manchester utd) on the telly when the kettle whistled 3 times. It was not switched on, it had not been used since lunch time and the water was stone cold¡K

Late last year my dad came in from work, took off his sweatshirt and put it on a chair in his wardrobe ready for the next day. Next morning he went to the wardrobe and the sweat shirt had gone, he asked my mum if she had moved it or washed it ? she said no and hadn't even been to the wardrobe. This was 6 months ago and the sweatshirt has not turned up.

A few days after the sweat shirt went missing a banana disappeared, (riveting or what ļ). It was a Tuesday morning, my mum went to work with 1 banana left in the fruit bowl, came back at lunch time and it had gone, my dad had been out all day and had not touched it, my mum asked my brother and myself if we had popped in and eaten it, but we had both been at work all day.

Either they have got a sweatshirt stealing, banana eating, whistling ghost or a burglar with a fetish for old jumpers and fruit.

All this started when my mum and dad decided to move house, maybe what ever is doing this doesn't want them to go ??
Its being laughed off at the moment, we take the mickey out of my mum who I think is getting a bit spooked, the house does not have any cold spots or a weird atmosphere.

Talking of mundane ghost stuff, a button appeared from nowhere in my house a few weeks ago. No one I know has a button like it, it looks pretty old. Not very interesting, but maybe it's the start of something?

What happens when you press it...sorry couldn't resist.

Perhaps it's a lucky button - maybe if you you rub it you'll get three wishes!

Or you could plant it in the garden and see if you get a giant beanstalk... :D

But seriously, Ghosts all in the Mind

Yes, it's Dr Richard Wiseman again

but...
The researchers interpret this as evidence that hauntings are a real phenomenon because they are concentrated in specific places over time.

Indeed, it is known for people from different cultures to consistently report similar experiences over perhaps hundreds of years.

"Hauntings exist, in the sense that places exist where people reliably have unusual experiences," Dr Richard Wiseman told BBC News Online. "The existence of ghosts is a way of explaining these experiences."

But are the ghosts real? Dr Wiseman and his colleagues are not so sure.

They claim, somewhat paradoxically, that the hauntings exist but the ghosts do not.

"People do have consistent experiences in consistent places, but I think that this is driven by visual factors mainly, and perhaps some other environmental cues," he said.

Is this the same guy who got spooked in his office, until
he discovered that there was a low-frequency vibration that
was causing the sensation?

A good, but mundane explanation -- and he is ignoring
many other "flavors" of ghost manifestation.

Similar episodes have occurred in my home from time to time. The first incident was when a cork screw went missing. We looked for it in the usual place it was kept but it was not there so we gave it up for lost and bought another one. Then I opened up the cutlery drawer (months later) and there it was in its usual place. I never mentioned it to my wife and neither did she to me until we got talking one night and it was brought up. We have no explanation. One of our rooms was used as a glory hole and I had left a hammer behind a mirror on a dressing table. I went to get it and it was not there. I looked round the house, the hammer was gone. A few months later whilst clearing out the room the hammer was behind the mirror on the dressing table, the strange thing was there was dust at the back of the table that should have left the imprint of the hammer when I picked it up, the dust completely covered the back of the table as if the hammer had been placed later. Why these implements have gone then returned I have know idea.Is my wife taking the piss?Is it me and I cant remember? If it is contact from the other side I must assume the wines drunk and the DIY is completed.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. We had a new kitchen put in about 18 months ago and our bread knife disappeared. We thought it had got lost in all the chaos but it took us about a year before we bothered buying a new one. The very next day I opened the cutlery drawer and there was the old bread knife sitting on top of the other knives. I was annoyed just because I thought it was typical that we should find the old one after buying a new shiny one, so I asked my husband where he had found it. He denied all knowledge of it. It just reappeared out of nowhere. I was a bit disconcerted to say the least because I know that knife had been missing because I had searched high and low for it .
