Are There Any Ghost/Haunting Investigations Worth Watching On YouTube?

Hello.

I often work long evenings and usually have stretches of time to browse the net at my leisure. Naturally, I am always drawn to FT and Youtube in search of paranormal treasures. I've trawled through YouTube for what must be hours and hours over the years in the vain hope of finding a group/individual/channel undertaking anything like credible investigations into potential haunted locations/hauntings. I wondered if could benefit from the experience of forum members and ask what your suggestions would be to take a look at.

Thanks kindly :)

You are panning for gold in shark-infested waters. There are a lot of folk out there, armed with a device or two, who will make long, unedited videos of bunk in any place with a reputation of being haunted - and some they merely assert are. They model themselves on the mainstream tv shows, the focus being on the team, the "sensitives," the "techs" and the "geeks, who read books and stuff."

Suffice it to say that if such outfits ever did record anything anomalous, it would be dismissed because of its source!

I wish I could be more positive but I recently sat through 45 minutes of Youtube piffle about a pub three miles away!

More fool me! :comphit:

ive never seen a convincing or credible piece ...

You might be able to find something of interest over at the paranormal soup forum.

I haven't been through them to see how many focus on ghosts, but we have a few threads recommending Fortean videos and channels on YouTube:

Likely to be a lot of dead links in there, but a number still work.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, the tidal wave of absolute tat is remarkable. I think there is only one video I have seen on Youtube that genuinely makes me stop and think (not that it's necessarily paranormal, but that I can't readily explain what I'm seeing) is this one...

However, this is an awful quality version. Some time ago I saw a different copy that was markedly better quality, although still rather grainy. It's the only thing that has stuck in my mind over the years. I've found that any kind of YouTube compilation is nothing but an exercise in wasted time coupled with abject disappointment. Perhaps it's a sign...stop looking for evidence via YouTube and get out investigating in person.

I usually switch video off in the first 20 seconds when they ask me to 'click on the link below and don't forget to subscribe' in an annoying Californian accent .. that's how I know the video's going to be shit .. not xenophobia/racism or anything, they just are always shit.

Most Youtube videos for Forteana fall into the following categories:
  • The actual, sensible, analytical, factual stuff (rare)
  • The insane ramblings of a nutter or bunch of nutters
  • Clickbait
  • Stuff that is spoilt by poor research, bad spelling and awful music/bad voiceovers
  • Stuff that is completely amateurish
  • Stuff that is there just to sell a book/video/lecture tour
  • The inane and silly, produced for entertainment

I'm a big fan of both the first and last on that list.

It's a good argument for the case that the most un-nerving/chilling/spooky material is still that which is read. Perhaps that's why the FT forum is still going strong after many years. Some kind of video based IHTM would be interesting. It'd certainly make a refreshing change from the sorts of things Mythopoeika point out above. That said, I imagine it would bring it's own unique set of credibility questions...

The trouble is, you can't make genuine weirdness appear on cue, you have to be lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time or else orchestrate it yourself, and making it up is a whole lot easier.

Absolutely; I suppose I was thinking that there has been a few years since HD quality cameras hit the market and over those years, is it reasonable...(plausible???) to consider that something might have been captured during that time that is so genuinely 'stand out' it would cut through the mire of nonsense that is being touted as 'Most Genuine Ghost Footage' or 'Unbelievable Paranormal Footage Captured'. I'm thinking from a law of averages sort of standpoint. Assuming you have a number of sincere investigators with integrity all across the world, not prone to falsification, when does the probability of something being recorded become feasible? Kind of begs for a paranormal investigation version of the Drake equation.

This one looks quite interesting .. exploring Denbigh Asylum ..

This one makes me laugh. Sometimes I am reminded of the 3 stooges when watching this guy...

If i had seen that i would have walked over to see what it was..:dunno:

I've always been a bit of a fan of the Buzzfeed Unsolved duo of Shane and Ryan. Not much happens most of the time but they're entertaining and usually very informative on the locations they visited.

My one problem is that with the advent of cheap and easily available filming equipment, some recordings look too good to be true and could've been faked - even though they might, just might, be genuine. Some poor-looking footage might, again just might, be lousy recording equipment. It's a tough call.
I usually question a certain, ah, tendency for spooks to follow the regional expectation, e.g. white dressed, long black haired ghosts in the Far East, America 'specialising' in EVP, and so on.

Poltergeists in most Russian videos ..

It's quite funny I like how Ryan freaks out.

The trouble is the use of spirit boxes has practically infected every ghost hunter you tube channel and for me that just ruins it.

The drone footage is good. It's interesting that the layout is a cross with all four sections looking identical. I would need a compass to figure out what wing of the asylum I was in. The other question that I have for anyone who is doing any ot these types of videos of old buildings is"Where is your mask?" The comment about lead paint as well as the sign clearly warning of asbestos, along with moulds and dust don't seem to even register as health dangers to any of the people (at least 3) who are in the building videoing. Anyone who does this long term would eventually have serious breathing issues.

The camera I use is a Panasonic HC-V520 so a reasonably modern digital camcorder. My dad's told me he's giving me his 80's VHS-C camcorder for Christmas so I'll have the opportunity to film with two cameras from different eras in completely different formats side by side .. I'm hoping to capture potential paranormal phenomena on both magnetic VHS-C tape and contemporary digital recording at the same time. How I'll be able to convert VHS-C to a digital upload afterwards? .. I'll cross that bridge when I get to it and that's assuming the batteries still work on the old camera.
