Conservationists are excited about the discovery of a rare octopus on a Gisborne beach.
A walker on Pouawa Beach over the Easter weekend found the first recorded whole specimen of a greater argonaut, a type of octopus about the size of a dinner plate.
The Department of Conservation says little is known about the biology of the creature.
It has been frozen and sent to Auckland University of Technology squid expert Dr Steve O'Shea.
The greater argonaut is normally found in tropical and warm temperate waters.
