This forum may have been mentioned before but it constantly being added to and well worth a browse:

"My first home was an 17th Century cottage in the Underwood area of Plympton, one of the few buildings in that existed during thr 1832 cholera outbreak. When I was renovating it, I found old children's shoes and coins; which all went back with some modern coins for added luck. I never experienced anything in that property apart from the witch who I ended up marrying.
The home I talked about was built in 1962 so when it all started it was a surprise to all. The first thing was having your name called out when you were on the stairs, clear as a bell and no one else in the property. Then my two year old daughter started to talk about the lady with the bad foot who sat in the corner during the night. That is when we got the church involved."

I do enjoy that site. I don't go there often and I don't agree with many of the political views, but there are lots of brilliantly funny anecdotes and generally a lot of interesting stuff.

If I wasn't missing an eye no doubt I'd have been in the forces and at that age I'd have loved it. All those gadgets! But now, I'm thankful it never happened. Maybe I've grown up.

I had a fall out at work when I was 17. wrote my resignation and went off to the recruitment office at Camberwell. It was closed for redecorating/refurbishment.
I went home and when mum found out why I was back early she went ballistic. I got the whole “no son of mine is coming back from Ireland in a body bag” lecture, but I could have joined an Irish regiment because of my dads military record. At that time Irish regiments never served in Ulster.

Anyway, work didn’t want to lose me, they took me out of the drawing office and put me onto the construction sites, life was fine and I never looked back.

I don’t know that I would have been accepted into the military due to the Crohn’s disease that I had been diagnosed with at 10 years old, but who knows?

It was all open to the general public, once-upon-a-time. When it became notorious for sexism, racism and the rest, the more robust views were banished to Members Only areas.

Unlike here, where only the mildest, sweetest stuff is kept out of the sight of the hoi polloi! :curt:

Do a search for Stanta (mentioned in another thread). A friend who trained there told me some of the stories that he'd heard (he experienced nothing himself) and gave me a link to the forum.
