Asparagus mystic offers tips for the future
Last Updated: 4:01pm GMT 12/03/2008

A fortune-teller has claimed she can divine people's futures by using asparagus

Jemima Packington, who likes to call herself the UK's only "asparamancer", has been testing out her technique at the British Trade and Travel Fair at Birmingham's NEC.

Ms Packington, from Worcester, throws the asparagus spears onto the floor and makes her predictions based on how they land.

She says she stumbled across her asparagus-predicting skills a few years ago by chance, after some stalks fell on the floor and she made a prediction which came true.

She told BBC News: "I can't even remember what prediction I made when I was young but my family went very quiet and it came true and the rest is history."

She has even used her gift of asparagus foresight on actor Tony Robinson, who played Baldrick in the comedy series Black Adder.

The asparagus he threw landed in the shape of a number four. Ms Packington predicted he should grab an opportunity that would present itself.

He said he felt as if a great burden had been lifted off his shoulders after his mystical encounter.

Ms Packington was at the fair to help promote the asparagus industry in Worcestershire, which is the largest producer of the vegetable in the UK.

Amazing! He's been presenting Time Team on C4 for the last few centuries (it seems)...

The asparagus season is quite short, I wonder if she can use the tinned stuff?

Or celery.

Probably Palm Reading too, for significant dates in your life...

I had images of zombie vegetables, night of the living asparagus sort of thing, I'm rather disapointed now

Mystic makes 2010 predictions using asparagus
A fortune teller who uses asparagus to look into the future believes there will be a hung Parliament after using the vegetable to predict the headlines for next year.
Published: 7:30AM GMT 29 Dec 2009

Mystic Jemima Packington has forecast that Gordon Brown will be ousted in the general election while she also predicts the economy will continue on a slow burn.

Miss Packington, who claims to be the country's first asparamancer, makes her forecasts by throwing the vegetable in the air and analysing how it lands.

"Readings vary. Sometimes it will be absolutely instantaneous and other times it takes a little bit of interpretation," she said.

"Some leap out at you and others take a little bit longer."

She also believes that England will fare poorly in South Africa and crash out in the first or second round.

But she has predicted that Britain will experience an extended heatwave this summer.

Other forecasts she has made include a royal engagement and a high profile royal health scare or death.

In showbusiness, she also predicts George Clooney and Helen Mirren will win Oscars in 2010.

Miss Packington, from Pershore, Worcestershire, said: "Vale of Evesham asparagus is not in season at the moment and I refuse to use anything else. I have made my predictions using asparagus sausages which might account for some slight anomalies :D

Thus far her predictions have been correct. She correctly identified the names and order of housemates that would be evicted from Big Brother 2008 - the only fortune teller to do so out of four clairvoyants.

Miss Packington, who started doing readings when she was nine, said: "I started to get more serious about it when I was in my 20's because people wanted me to read their futures.

"I think it is something you are given and you use it wisely.

"My great aunt reads tea leaves and one lunch she time threw some asparagus on the floor and I made some comments about the way it fell and my family went silent and they think that my great aunt's gifts followed through to me because whatever I said came true." 8)

"The world's only 'asparamancer,' Jemima Packington of Great Britain, has revealed the tips she's received about the coming year from reading the asparagus spears:

1. There will be sad a loss to the Royal Family

2. But there will also be a happy addition

3. A major entertainment mogul will retire

4. England will be knocked out of the World Cup in the early stages

5. Politics in the Middle East will continue to raise concern

6. One political party leader will be dogged by turmoil and not recover.

7. A storm this month will bring more misery to Britain

8. The weather in the Far East will deteriorate as the year progresses.

9. A musical supergroup will split.

10. There will be a string of celebrity divorces.

You can follow Packington on Twitter at @asparamancer.

Below are a couple of video clips: one of Packington demonstrating her craft, followed by Russell Howard making a couple of predictions about her."

There are two other threads with the same title (two by me  ), all about the same person.

Perhaps they should be Merged, minced, or other wise dealt with.
(I don't like too much asparagus.)

She's baaa-ack ... The "asparamancer" Jemima Packington claims her asparagus-tossing prowess allowed her to foresee the Queen's death. She's delved further into the signs and portents, claiming King Charles will defer to William next year and Boris Johnson will return to succeed Liz Truss. Stay tuned ...

King Charles will retire next year claims psychic who reads asparagus

A physic who predicted the Queen's death last last week using asparagus tips claims that King Charles III will step down as King and hand the reign over to his son, Prince William next year. Jemima Packington's rare talent makes her the only self proclaimed 'Asparamancer' in the world who is able to see the future simply by tossing asparagus sticks in the air and reading how they land.

Her previously successful predictions have included Brexit, the death of Prince Philp, Theresa May resigning as PM and Harry and Meghan leaving the Royal Family, Wales Online reports. One of her most heartbreaking predictions for 2022 became true last week when her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth the II passed away ...

The 65 year old's inkling for the Queen's death was influenced earlier this year when she noticed that some spears of the veg had formed the shape of a broken crown. She said: “The spears formed a crown with some broken off which indicated to me that there would be a great Royal sadness. ...

Isn't what she does more in the nature of scrying? I mean, is it intrinsic to the asparagus, or is she just focussing on the thrown asparagus and saying what comes into her head?

Exactly.
There are many many forms of divination that consist of tryiing to read meaning into the patterns created by objects and materials.

Some cultures have used clouds. The Romans used chicken entrails. The Turks read coffee dregs; the Northern Europeans tea leaves. The Russians used to pour melted wax into glasses of water and project the pattern onto the wall with a candle and use that as a basis.

What is important here is not the material or object that is used - there is nothing inherently special about asparagus, for example. Nor is it even the patterns that are being produced. It is the person who is doing the divination. It is very much an art form. In a way it is simmilar to some types of dream interpretation - which also work by making creative leaps on the basis of random `noise`.

I believe that what takes place is that the diviner looks at the patterns and in so doing - in almost like a form of autohypnosis - releases his/her subconscious creativity - thus arriving at a `reading` in this manner.

For example, Mrs Packingtom managed to see ` crown` in the fallen asparagus stems. If I had observed these I doubt I would have seen the same thing - the interpretation came very much from her.

With all that in mind, I'm inclined to look kindly on such things as tea leave reading and asparagus reading. I don't think the people who do it are usually fakirs. I think they are making use of a genuine psychological resource. Whether their predicitons are reliable is a whole different matter, but I would be inclined to take them a little more seriously thatn less obviously absurd forms of divination such as Tarot and palmistry.

I hope that Mrs Packington is a poor diviner though - one of her recent predictions brings me out in a cold sweat.

I know the principles of palmistry make for rather literal interpretations, but I think tarot meanings are allowed to be more symbolic and subjective, whether with richly illustrated decks like the Rider-Waite or more traditional decks that don't have any symbolic illustrations on the numbered lesser arcana. I've long thought that card reading was exactly the kind of divination you describe, with only a slightly more formalized method.

Taking this as a tip for the Long Winter Evenings!

I'm rather intrigued by the concept of tyromancy, which is divination by cheese. I don't know if any particular cheese is best for this.

I've also wondered it Pastamancy is feasible, in one form it would use the words formed when a tin of alphabet spaghetti's emptied onto a flat surface, the more advanced pastamancer would study the patterns formed when a handful of uncooked spaghetti is dropped.

Aided by your cracker of choice & maybe a nice chutney.

When divination by cheese, tyromancy, involves crackers of choice and a nice chutney it is no longer called tyromancy, it is called wotyoufancy and is a very specialised form of divination based on whats in the fridge and cupboard. That means much planning, preparation, dedication and a good film to watch.

How about divination by pancake? Free-pour the batter onto skillet or griddle and interpret the shape it takes. Eat it if it's a good sign, so as to absorb the good energy, and toss it if it isn't.

It's been done (or at least suggested ... ). See: http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2018/02/pancake-day-what-your-pancake-says.html

Predicting possibilities with pancakes

The concept of using pancakes as a divination method is not new to the inhabitants of Newfoundland, where small tokens are cooked into the pancakes in the manner of an English Christmas pudding, with much the same intent- if you find a coin, you have luck in finance, or a heart might bring luck in love.

Apparently a nail suggests that you will become or marry a carpenter ...

There's also a Russian tradition of performing light divination using blini (pancakes) at Maslenitsa (Shrovetide).
Maslenitsa Fortune Telling: The Unscientific Method

With the Maslenitsa week in full swing, what can be better than gorging on buttery, lacy blini, the Russian version of pancakes? Some might argue that it’s also learning what the coming year has in store. ...

In the Russian culture, fortune-telling dates back to pre-Christianity, as people have always tried to get a glimpse of the unknown and found exciting (and delicious) ways to do so. One might argue that many methods were developed and perfected by unmarried girls curious about their future love interests. Whether the same methods work for single males in pursuit of a suitable match requires further research. For the record, there’s no scientific evidence that fortune telling on blinis – as popular as it might be – works for anyone, but it is guaranteed to bring on a blissful food coma.

The First Blin

A famous Russian saying goes: “Первый блин комом,” (“The first pancake is always lumpy”) as in the first attempt always goes wrong. Picture yourself in the kitchen, next to a hissing skillet, a bowl of smooth batter waiting on the counter. As you pour the first ladleful and swirl it around, your first blin is almost cooked. Then comes the tricky part.

If it’s easy to flip, you will get engaged within a year. If it doesn’t, you’ll get to enjoy your singles lifestyle for the next three years.

It gets more complicated: if the blin did flip easily and its edges are smooth, then the union will be a happy one. If your flipping skills are questionable and the edges come out torn, it’s your sign to take a better look before taking a leap into matrimony.

If the blin is skinny, then things will be easy this year. If fat, there’s lots of challenges ahead.

The best way to deal with the first blin is to give it to a dog – this guarantees financial stability for the whole family. ...
