Autonomous / Self-Driving Cars & Other Ground Vehicles

It seems though that they aren't truly 'driverless' as they have a driver who sits there 'just in case', and also someone on board to assist passengers. So actually using more staff than before. Seems odd.
More staff, for now. Once things are worked out it would presumably be less staff., or at least the same amount as the passenger assisting person could remain and continue performing assistance duties presumably currently held by the bus driver.

Fiendishly clever. Vid at link.

Driverless cars: Researcher disguises himself as car seat in study

A study to test people's reactions to driverless cars has used a "ghost driver" to record their responses. The work, by the University of Nottingham, found that, in the absence of someone in the driving seat, pedestrians trust certain visual prompts more than others when deciding whether to cross the road.

As part of the study, a car was driven around the university's campus over several days with its driver - research fellow David R. Large - concealed in the driver's seat.

Mr Large, senior research fellow with the Human Factors Research Group at the university, said: "We wanted to explore how pedestrians would interact with a driverless car and developed this unique methodology to explore their reactions."

Striking back. against robo-taxis.

A car-free activist group in San Francisco has found a unique way to protest against the impact of self-driving cars: placing traffic cones on the hoods of autonomous "robo-taxis," disabling them temporarily. The group, Safe Street Rebel, started the trend in response to issues like traffic congestion, accidents, and lack of accountability for violations caused by these autonomous vehicles.

Jalopnik:

It's safe to say Google's Waymo and GM's Cruise seem to have worn out their welcome in the Bay Area. The snafus have been numerous; stalled cars have randomly blocked traffic on busy nights, blocked buses, interfered with first responders and even knowingly hit a dog. Despite the self-driving cars not proving any better than human drivers (and occasionally proving much worse), the two companies are trying to expand both their operating hours and territory.

As a biker I take notice of were the driver's of other vehicles are looking when deciding
what other drivers are going to do, so that will be one clue gone with driver less, I also
wonder how they will cope with our narrow lanes were we often have to fold the mirrors
to inch passed each other, will it just see it as road blocked and sit there till someone
sorts it out.
If it works though it's got to be better than having some of the idiots on the road we
have now.
