Throw: I'm unsure what you are trying to do. These are the current settings:

Options

HTML is OFF
BBCode is ON
Smilies are ON

You can use the various buttons above to insert the BBcode or (like I do) get the BBcode extension for FireFox.

But as this is asked in the custom avatars thread I'm unsure I have answered the question.

In the same way that I assume some people use the <img tag to host their sig images, I was trying to input it into the field for the avatar URL. Basically I could stick the picture of the bee in direct from the site it's hosted on now but it would be huge, I wanted to use the height="80" option to get it back down to size. Some applications will bypass whatever tags they squirt around an image if they see an open < and I didn't know whether or not this version of vb was the same, so I was just opening a tag in that field, inserting the URL size and border requirements, and then closing it again. I could download the pic, resize it and then upload it to my space, but I wondered if this would be an easier way of doing it and not necessitate faffing around with any third parties.

Ah gotcha. No you can't do that.

As a general principle (even if the avatar dimensions are constrained - something we'll add back in) it is wise to make sure the image you use is the right size as you get more control how it is 'compressed' and also it makes the file size smaller and the page downloads quicker.

I don't want to see any avatars !!! can they be switched off ?????

I like seeing people's avatars. They tell you alot about a person, but then again I am on a fast machine and I know they slow down the pages at home so I see your point.

I think what Kitsunegari was asking was if they can switch of the display of avatars in their profiles not get rid of them altogether for everyone. I believe there was another featue on the old board where you could switch off people's sigs if you wanted.

Switch off the Avatars !!!! Nonsense, I only just got mine reloaded after all the techy delays.

Felt like I lost my reflection in the mirror. What with all the ladies posting lovely pics of themselves, I decided it was time to show me handsome mug.

A pox on those who would turn off the Avatars !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I decided I had to have a totally different avatar to the 15 I already have ;)

Yes !! thats what I was getting at, it was an old feature...but as is the want with new and improved things....you can't dot hat yet........ avatars are lovely but not when you are reading the board at work !!!...yeah...i'm really busy...

If my Avatar appears, then you can very simply upload to techimage.net, and use this for hosting (best site ever, simple to use, blah blah blah).

If it doesn't appear then techimage.net is a pile of pants, should be avoided like the plague and in no way are my IT skills in anyway dubious. It really is the sites fault and not mine

did you guys try to reload avatars?

Hey Mods,
Did you guys try to reload the old avatars? (didn't think so since it was not near the top of the list the last time I checked. . . okay, so I didn't see the list or how long it was. . . okay, maybe you guys are heroically ticking things off the list very quickly now. . . anway, back to my question)

My avatar (cool spinning globe) was gone when I came back today, so if you loaded the old avatars, that may have deleted my new avatar that I just put in.

If you didn't load the old avatars, did you guys delete mine for being too big, too annoying, or too cool?

Let me know so I can adjust it to a better size, less annoying, or less cool. 8)

Thanks to the Mods for their work!

HeadNSpace: As far as I'm aware the answer is none of the above.

As I said above we don't need to upload the old avatars as they are all still there (I can see them when I view your profile with my modly powers).

However, as I've said if your avatar is too large and disrupting the proportions of the forum it will be removed if a mod sees it.(if someone keeps uploading too large an avatar you might recieve a little note asking you not to as if it gets to be a big issue we will disable all avatars until we have added in a way to constrain their dimensions) so it is possible it was removed if it was too large (but as I haven't seen your avatar I couldn't comment). I did check your profile and there is no avatar associated with it. Adjust it to 80x80 pixels and try again and it should be fine.

I need to see them to be honest - it lets you know who the post belongs to in a far quicker way than reading everyone's names. It's far easier.

Ahem, is it possible to explain, to a completely computer illiterate person like myself how to add an avatar?! I have read back through this thread and there are some explantions but, er, im still getting used to the whole 'ive got a computer thing'!! On the profile page i follow the intructions: ie i add the url of the image i want (making sure its not above the size limit) but then im diverted to the default avatars.

The only reason i ask is because i have noticed other avatars being added and i wouldn't mind adding my own!! If it is possible to explain (in the most basic of terms that would be very much appreciated.

OK:

1. Find some websapce to host it - if you are stuck for somewhere then try:

www.photobucket.com

I pointed someone over there the other day and they signed up fine.

2. Upload the avatar. If you have problems Photo Bucket have instructions.

3. Get the link to it. Ditto.

4 Go to your profile (see link at top) and put that link in the box where it asks for it and submit it.

Any problems then feel free to ask for further help.

So you can teach an old dog new tricks!!! Cheers Emps. :D

I'm astonished that so few of our posters have (thus far) been able to reload their avatars. Certainly livens up the page to see the images people choose !! Perhaps the MODs could post a general notice at the top of each board. I always post on IHTM, and most posters still haven't 'caught on'.

I have no idea where my spinning cube came from or even if it's on my computer, so I was waiting for the MB to restore it. I finally decided this morning to put something easier on the eyes to replace it. ;) (I hope it's not too large. I'm barely computer literate).)

Prof Pretorius: Its currently only one feature amongst many that we are working on restoring so I'm unsure if it is worth making a specific note for it. People who are concerned should be able to find this thread easily ;)

If you'd dropped me a note I could have dug it out for you - as I said I can see them.

Ah ha better than that I was just inspired to check and those that were already uplaoded can be found at:

www.forteantimes.com/forum/images/avatars/ID.extn

i.e. mine was at:

www.forteantimes.com/forum/images/avatars/2496.gif

and my ID is 2496 so if you know the actual extension and your ID you can find where you avatar is hidden and then once you have the URL you can put it into the slot which asks for the link to your image and badda bing it seems to work!!!!

Apologies for not thinking of this earlier. :(

Me too!! When I'm in IRC I'm always saying "who are you? What's your avatar?!?!?" I get very confused by names ... course now hardly anyone's got an av, I'm totally lost ...

Yeah, thanks Emps 8) ,When I first tried, just got "go away your not allowed".

OK cool - glad it worked and good to see the Bullseye avatar back ;)

If people are haivng problems finding theirs then ask - although I can't do it for everyone (and it should, hopefully, be straightforward) if you have tried and failed I can also take a peek at your profile to see what is going on.

As I said above - if people have uploaded a new avatar since the board move then the old one has gone for good I'm afraid.

Hey, no need tp apologize, Emps. It never would've occured to me anyway. Change is good. It forced me kick-start my general inertia. :)

Are we currently able to change our titles? The bit below our names. Can't find it now.
