A few months ago I came across a story of a man who lived in Hong Kong in the 1960s who had seen the deer called Axis deer, like a light brown with white spots, completely different from the usual muntjac. This was on the south side of the island, near Tai Tam reservoir. I also have a newspaper photo from 1977 showing a male Axis deer in a private zoo on Lantau island.

This deer was brought to Hong Kong in the 1870s or `80s from the Indian subcontinent. That I do know and some were given to the ruler of Hawaii.

Does anyone know any more?

Richard.

Why are they a source of joy for picnickers? I doubt many could eat a whole one.
