Dead—Not Dead! (Mistaken Reports & Declarations Of Death)

Romanian man to stay officially dead! :buck:

“I am officially dead, although I’m alive, I have no income and because I am listed dead, I can’t do anything.”
Since he's legally can't do anything, time for someone to go on a crime spree...

A man from the small village of Santa Teresa in Paraguay returned home after three days away to find his family mourning a body they thought was his.

Juan Ramón Alfonso Penayo, 20, had last been seen on Thursday leaving the family home on the border with Brazil.

The area is hotly disputed between a number of drug gangs and when Mr Penayo did not return, his family assumed he had met with trouble.

When police found a charred body on Sunday, they concluded it was him.

The family held a wake in the village only for Mr Penayo to turn up and find them grieving over the coffin they thought held his body.

Lucky she wasn't frozen stiff.

A South African woman is recovering in hospital after being discovered alive in a mortuary fridge.

The woman was taken to Carletonville morgue, in Gauteng province, having been declared dead by paramedics following a road accident.

Ambulance company Distress Alert said she had shown "no form of life", South Africa's TimesLive website reports.

But when a morgue worker returned to check on the body in the fridge, he found the woman was breathing.

An official has confirmed to the BBC the woman is now being treated in hospital after being referred by forensics officers. She has not been named.

I hope he got tea and sympathy when he returned.

A Kazakh family was recently coming to terms with the violent and mysterious death of their elderly relative, when he just turned up at home.

"When Uncle Aigali walked through the door hale and hearty two months after we'd buried him, my daughter Saule nearly dropped dead of a heart attack," Esengali Supygaliev told the Azh.kz news site.

The 63-year-old had left home one June morning and didn't come back. "Aigali had been known to wander off for a week of two before", Esengali said, so the family waited a month before contacting the police - who in due course asked them to identify a badly-burnt body.

Tea and sympathy

DNA tests showed that these were the mortal remains of Aigali Supygaliev "with 99.2% certainty", the authorities said, and issued an official death certificate.

In September the family buried Aigali in the Muslim cemetery of Tomarly, their home town just north of the Caspian Sea port of Atyrau.

"We held a wake, and the extended family organised a traditional 'konil shai' ceremony," where friends can share tea and sympathy with the bereaved, Esengali said.

All rise ... from the dead. Cork judge delighted as man thought to be dead walks into court

A Christmas miracle played out at Cork District Court where a man who was thought to be dead walked into court. The man in question was Finbarr Geary. He was due before Cork District Court on Tuesday in relation to an alleged public order incident at the Simon Community on Anderson’s Street, Cork.

On that occasion, the 29-year-old’s solicitor said that he had been notified by the Simon Community that the young man was dead. Defence solicitor, Frank Buttimer said he had written to Finbarr Geary care of the Simon Community and his letter was returned to him indicating that the man was deceased.

When the case was mentioned again, Judge Kelleher addressed the young man directly about the fact that rumours of his death were somewhat exaggerated, as Mark Twain put it.

Here's another case from Detroit ...
‘Dead’ woman found to be breathing at Detroit funeral home

A young woman was discovered to be alive after she had been declared dead and taken to a Detroit funeral home, officials said.

The Southfield fire department said paramedics tried to revive the 20-year-old woman for 30 minutes Sunday.

“Given medical readings and the condition of the patient, it was determined at that time that she did not have signs of life,” the department said.

“The Oakland County medical examiner’s office was contacted and given the medical data,” the department said. “The patient was again determined to have expired and the body was released directly to the family to make arrangements with a funeral home of their choosing.” ...

But then came a startling discovery at the James H. Cole funeral home: The woman was still alive.

“Our staff confirmed she was breathing” and called a Detroit emergency medical crew, the funeral home said.

The woman was taken to a hospital. ...

Much better than her opening her eyes after embalming.

On a similar note - part of the reason this despicable guy confessed (I've discovered) was that his nerve had shattered when he put his lover's head on the fire and there was a roll of thunder (genuine thunderstorm) - and her eyes opened. OK all easily explainable scientifically but imagine - and indeed consider well-deserved - the terror it imbued in someone engaged in the business of dismembering and obliterating his pregnant lover.

There's a world of difference between someone being medically pronounced dead when they're alive and someone being declared dead because of chicanery/mistaken identity etc.

'Dead' man comes back to life at mortuary stunning staff during embalming

A Kapkatet hospital supervisor told reporters that Peter Kigen was 'lucky' that a qualified mortician reacted quickly after the 'dead man' screamed in pain due to a cut being made in his leg

A “dead” man screamed in pain after mortuary staff preparing to embalm him made a cut in his leg.

Peter Kigen, from Bureti in Kenya, had collapsed at home. According to his uncle, Denis Langat, the 32-year old “had been suffering from a stomach ailment which forced us to rush him to hospital.”

A nurse at Kapkatet Hospital “casually” checked the patient over, says Mr Langat, before declaring him dead.

Mr Kigen was transferred to the hospital’s mortuary, and the staff there promptly set about preparing him for burial.

As part of the embalming process, the blood is removed from the body through the veins and replaced with formaldehyde-based chemicals through the arteries. ...

It appears to have been this procedure that caused the “dead” man to regain consciousness and scream in pain. ...

While Mr Kigen’s family believe that the error was down to hospital staff, Kapkatet Hospital’s medical superintendent Gilbert Cheruiyot said that they were to blame for the incident: “His relatives presumed he was dead and did not even wait for certification of death,” he said.

“They moved him to the mortuary, on their own.” ...

He added: “They asked Kigen’s relatives to give them some time but they accused the clinicians of taking too much time and decided to take him to the mortuary."

“It was while the mortician was getting ready to embalm his body that she noticed some signs of life.”

This French woman was administratively declared legally dead a few years ago, and she's been laboring ever since to be recognized as still among the living.
Woman ruled dead in 2017 fights to be declared alive

Frenchwoman Jeanne Pouchain has an unusual problem. She’s officially dead. She has been trying for three years to prove that she is alive.

The 58-year-old woman says she lives in constant fear, not daring to leave her house in the village of Saint Joseph, in the Loire region. Authorities seized her car over an unpaid debt she contests and which is at the center of her troubles. She fears the family furniture will be next.

Pouchain’s status has prevented her and her husband, who is her legal beneficiary along with her son, from using their joint bank account. Being declared deceased has deprived her of other critical amenities.

“I no longer exist,” Pouchain said by telephone. “I don’t do anything....I sit on the veranda and write.” She called the situation “macabre.”

Pouchain’s status as deceased is the result of a 2017 Lyon court decision that deemed her dead even though no death certificate was produced. The decision came at the end of a legal dispute with an employee of Pouchain’s former cleaning company, who was seeking compensation after losing her job 20 years ago. ...

Bihari was awarded an Ig Nobel Prize in 2003 ...

The 2003 Ig Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Lal Bihari, of Uttar Pradesh, India, for a triple accomplishment: First, for leading an active life even though he has been declared legally dead; Second, for waging a lively posthumous campaign against bureaucratic inertia and greedy relatives; and Third, for creating the Association of Dead People.

Lal Bihari overcame the handicap of being dead, and managed to obtain a passport from the Indian government so that he could travel to Harvard to accept his Prize. However, the U.S. government refused to allow him into the country. His friend Madhu Kapoor therefore came to the Ig Nobel Ceremony at Harvard University, and accepted the Prize on behalf of Lal Bihari. Several weeks later, the Prize was presented to Lal Bihari himself in a special ceremony in India.

An elderly Spanish woman was reported to have died from COVID-19 because of an identification error. Her husband and others were shocked when she showed up at her nursing home alive.
Elderly woman who ‘died’ of COVID-19 reappears at nursing home after 10 days

An elderly Spanish woman stunned her family when she showed up at her nursing home — more than a week after they were told she had died of COVID-19.

Rogelia Blanco’s relatives were informed the 85-year-old woman died of the virus on Jan. 13 and that her funeral was the next day, according to the La Voz de Galicia newspaper. They were unable to attend due to protocols in place during the pandemic.

But on Saturday — 10 days later — she arrived back at the home in Xove, northern Spain. Her husband, who also lives there, was in a state of shock.

“I could not believe it,” her husband told the paper. “I was crying, after the death of my wife.”

The confusion happened when Blanco and other residents who tested positive for COVID-19 were transferred to another home, the Os Gozos residency in Pereiro de Aguiar, about 139 miles away, for specialized treatment late last month.

The woman who died was in fact Blanco’s roommate. ...

Body bag is spotted moving by TV crew after medics pronounced motorcyclist dead.

An elderly man had a "miracle" escape after paramedics pronounced him dead and placed him in a body bag - only for a reporter filming the scene to notice the bag moving.

CEN-BagMove-01.jpg

(Short unremarkable video at link below.)

Street food vendor Raimundo Nonato Santana da Silva, 71, suddenly fell ill while riding his motorbike in Araguaina, Brazil.

As a result, he fell off his vehicle and the paramedics called pronounced him dead at the scene on June 29.

They placed his body in a bag and left the scene while the police supervised the body until the coroners arrived.

But moments later, the officers and a reporter covering the accident noticed the bag twitching.

Reporter Geovanni Pereira told news site Globo News: "We were in the right place at the right time. I think it was a miracle. When I arrived, the bag was already closed. They opened it and I saw a small bubble of air coming out of the corner of his mouth. I performed CPR on him for ten minutes out of a gut instinct to help."

The sheepish paramedics were called back to the scene and they took the man to hospital alive.

The paramedics have since said they performed CPR on the man when they were first called to the scene. However, they pronounced him dead "based on technical evaluation".

The hospital have not released updates on his condition.

New Jersey Woman Locked In 7-Year Battle With IRS To Prove She Is, Indeed, Alive

A New Jersey woman has been battling the Internal Revenue Service to prove she’s still alive.

“They say nope, sorry, this account’s linked to a deceased person,” Dreissig said.

And now this is causing problems for Dreissig’s father’s tax returns, with the IRS saying he’s trying to claim a deceased dependent. ...

Brazilian ‘stillborn’ baby being prepped for burial found to be alive

A baby declared stillborn by a Brazilian doctor was being prepared for burial at a funeral home — but was miraculously found to still be alive.

The baby boy was born three months prematurely at a home in Ariquemes in the Brazilian state of Rondonia on Dec. 27

The 18-year-old mother, who hasn’t been identified, wasn’t aware she was pregnant, according to the report.

Her family claims she went to see a doctor after experiencing severe pains — but the medic sent her home.

The baby’s mother is 18 years old and gave birth without medical assistance after having been turned away by a doctor.

She gave birth without any medical assistance soon after, according to her family.

Immediately after giving birth, the mom rushed the baby, who weighed 2 pounds, 3 ounces, to the hospital, where doctors declared him stillborn.

A funeral director, who also hasn’t been named, was called in to collect the infant at 3 a.m. Dec. 28.

He noticed the baby sigh and realized he had a heartbeat as he was preparing the body for burial, the outlet said.

The funeral director rushed the baby back to the hospital, where the infant was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.

The current condition of the baby wasn’t immediately known and local police are investigating the ordeal.

A Man Declared Dead by Three Doctors Woke Up Shortly Before His Autopsy

4 FEBRUARY 2022

A few years ago, Spanish prison authorities were rather baffled after a prisoner who had been declared dead by three separate doctors woke up in the morgue – just hours before his own autopsy was set to commence.

iu

The prisoner, then-29-year-old Gonzalo Montoya Jiménez, was found unresponsive in his cell during a morning roll call on 7 January 2018 and had been transferred to a hospital mortuary in a body bag when pathologists heard something strange.

Snoring. Coming from inside the bag.

Jiménez, who was serving time for robbery in the maximum security wing of Asturias Central Penitentiary in northwest Spain, was first attended by two doctors on duty in the prison, after he was found sitting unconscious in a chair in his cell, with no signs of violence being evident.

Sensing no vital signs, the doctors declared him dead, and an hour later a forensic doctor inspected the body, concurred with the first evaluations, and issued a third death report.

Only later in the morgue did physicians realize something was terribly wrong.

By this point, Jiménez had already spent time in a cold storage room to help preserve his body, and his skin had been marked with scalpel guidelines in preparation for his imminent autopsy – at which point the mistaken corpse suddenly stirred.

I wonder how many living dead were cremated/buried?

On Sunday, online videos emerged showing two people who appear to be mortuary workers placing the body bag into a vehicle.

The workers are later seen pulling the bag open, and one can be heard saying the patient is still alive. The incident has sparked widespread anger on Chinese social media.

Officials in the Shanghai district of Putuo confirmed the incident late on Monday, adding that the patient had since been taken to hospital and was in a stable condition. District authorities said five officials and one doctor were under investigation. Four officials, including the deputy director of the local civil affairs bureau and the director of the care home, were fired. A doctor identified only by their surname Tian, also had their medical license revoked.

The patient's identity is still unknown.
